  1. Hi Kev There are quite a few marine keepers in Wellington but not a specific "club" for marines.
  2. Sounds like a type of algae. Just keep wiping it off and as the tank matures and fully cycles, and the plants grow, the algae should disappear.
  3. Where were the parents! If my daughter had turned up with a horse in tow I would want to know who it belonged to And if she had stolen it, I would have taken her to the cops myself and demanded they at least process her and lock her up for a few hours (to give her a fright) and then she would be made to pay for the damage (or work it off if she had no money).
  4. Any pics and stuff for the magazine?
  5. I'm pleased to hear the tank is temporary as goldfish are very messy and fast growing. They will need at least 150L. Looks like a normal fish to me. Are you sure it is a "he"? At this time of year, and the warmer water, it may be a she filling with eggs ready to spawn in a couple of months.
  6. I remember our guinea pigs being killed by a stoat or weasel when I was a child. They were in a cage out in the back paddock and no chance of escape. As Living Art said, they looked like they had been flattened by a steamroller with just fur and feet left (probably the bladder too but I was young and not looking that closely).
  7. Not all of them do alanmin. Congratulations Broms2. Hope all remain well. Love the name Cody by the way although my daughter, who is a teacher, say all the Cody's she has known have been little terrors! Does baby sis have a name yet?
  8. My fish never liked tiger worms and I am told they have a bitter taste (not wanting to taste them and see) but see if your fish will eat them.

    I'm New!

Hi and welcome from another Caryl (even if the spelling differs)

    River rocks

They are good too as they have rounded edges with no sharp bits for fish to catch themselves on. Perhaps you would like to join the Marlborough Aquarium Club at their next meeting?

    Bloated

See if you can get it to eat some cokked, shelled pea. If not, check to see how to do an Epsom Salts bath.

    Bloated

Fish get bloated for more than just dropsy If it is just the stomach I would suggest digestive problems.

    River rocks

Not greywacke, can't remember what it is though
  14. That is a plant that grows bushier if pruned regularly.

    River rocks

Ones that are perfectly safe to put in your aquarium
  16. I agree with supasi. I have left my tropicals unfed for 2 weeks with no problems.
  17. Welcome. Whereabouts in top of the south are you?
  18. Anything that kills mice is OK with me

    .

I do not consider my reply an attack. I was concerned for the fish. This person appeared to have done no research before buying animals totally dependent on that person for their life - which wasn't going to be a very long one I don't think. I explained why their choice was unsuitable for their tank and was prepared to give further advice once they explained the circumstances more fully. There were still too many for the tank mentioned, even if they were small, especially for a tank newly set up. A person should research their animal's requirements fully before purchasing any sort of pet. "It's just a fish so who cares" is too common these days.
  20. If you need something that doesn't take up too much time then I really think you should wait until you do have more time. When you buy an animal it is totally dependent on you for its food, companionship and good quality of life. If you don't have much time you will not be able to provide adequately for it. You also need to look long term. These reptiles live many years I believe. I assume you still live at home and go to school at the moment? What happens when you leave school, then home? Will you be able to find somewhere to live that allows pets? What if you decide to go overseas? Who will look after your pet? It isn't fair to expect your parents to do so (been there, done that!).
  21. I too go for the food being the cause, be it then upsetting the swim bladder or creating too much gas. If it doesn't seem to be related to food then I don't know what it could be since it only does it occasionally.
  22. If it is about physics it can't go in the fun section as physics isn't fun  (just kidding) If you love snakes so much you are going to have to move aren't you? I like them too but don't have a favourite as I don't know enough about individual species.
