  1. Good on you Donna. We got to see all her turtles last weekend. I hope Yertle is improving!
  2. Ah. A pity the frame won't fit in the new filter  If it just made of foam etc it would not hurt to cut it out of the frame and stuff it in the new filter. Have you got another tank? Could you just move half the fish over and run the tank with the new filter, doing water changes as required until it finished cycling, then transfer the other half of the fish over later once the bacteria has built up?
  3. So can you transfer the media from the old filter into the new one? I know nothing about this brand. If you can transfer the media over you can just run the new filter and shouldn't have any problems.
  4. No but I have heard a number of people say you should not use them for this but I can't remember the reasons. One would be if the pad was smaller than the tank base I guess :-?
  5. If you have just joined up with Tasman then you will be getting the magazines free, as an affiliated member of the FNZAS. As they will be having their AGM next month, they will then send in their current membership list and fees and your name will be on it So I imagine your first magazine will be the next one which comes out in May. Sorry I won't see you at the Tasman meeting this week (I belong to Tasman and Marlborough clubs) but Grant and I will be in Napier attending an FNZAS exec meeting, a HBAS meeting and quiz night and their tank crawl. We are looking forward to it. We won't do the overnighter in the Aquarium as Grant's arthritis is flaring at the moment and he wasn't sure he would be able to move after a night on the floor in there
  6. As I am sure some of you have already found out - the February magazines were posted on Friday. Less articles this time as one particular one took up a lot more space than usual (even after I cut it back somewhat) but I didn't like to split it into 2 parts in case someone started following instructions before being able to read the end - and then realise they may have wanted to do it a different way :-? So, this issue has si_sphinx's DIY background (the one he showed us in these forums. Guess which one took up all the space! ) Learn about flag cichlids Continuing our excellent series (thanks to Darren) on plecs - Red spots, gold spots and Pterygloplichthis Visitors to your pond can be very colourful, and interesting. CONFERENCE INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION FORM (form also downloadable from this website) A fish maze to keep you occupied for a long time Learn what uses Baking soda has in the aquarium hobby Odessa barbs, their care and breeding A report on the display the Wellington Aquarium & Water Garden Society set up at the Wellington Home and Garden Show Pot bellied seahorses are very interesting creatures and they get a really hard time trying to survive! Read about the Marlborough Club's tank and shop crawl in Christchurch
  7. I think you can usually see worms sometimes coming out of their anus if that is the problem. Also, I understood fish with worms lost weight. I've not seen the problem first hand though so can't be definite Sounds like the diet is fine though. :-?
  8. Can you not get another Odyssey within that price range? (I have no idea of car costs)
  9. What is it being fed? Is it possible it is constipated? If so, a cooked pea may help. Remove the shell before feeding it to the fish though. You can also Google the instructions for a bath in Epsom Salts, another cure for constipation.
  10. You can try the sponge idea to see if it helps. No way to tell otherwise. As long as the coral is in the water somewhere it will work. It doesn't have to be in the filter. A rinse will be enough, unless it smells bad, then I would boil it. What is the point of running one by day and one by night? These filters are designed to run 24/7, not be turned off and on. The water needs to be flowing through the media all the time. Keep the two of them running for 4 weeks and both should be well colonised by then. If the media is interchangeable you could put half the old media in the new filter and half the new media in the old filter. That will speed up the bacteria too.
  11. That's the good thing about frogs. They sit still so you can get a decent pic!
  12. The Red Shed is a nickname for The Warehouse usually
  13. He's not a hedgehog plucker he's the hedgehog pluckers son
  14. Otherwise it is probably a faulty ballast. A new light fitting would probably be cheaper than fixing an old ballast but should be considered anyway as they are far more efficient and don't get hot like the older ballast types. The older ones, when the tube ages, can get very hot.

Did you get a new camera for Christmas? Lovely pics and lovely fish. 8)
  16. I love Peer Gynt. That bit is "In the Hall of the Mountain King"
  17. Goldfish are very messy and produce a lot of waste. I suspect water quality as the culprit. What size is the tank? How long, and how, did you cycle it? I do not understand as you say you had 2 goldfish, cycled the tank, then you say you brought one fish home. I am assuming you did not use these 2 fish to cycle the tank? :-?
  18. I have not kept kribs but wonder about adding anything to a 60L that has a pair of kribs in it. If they start to breed they will rip into any other fish I would imagine :-?
  19. So obviously if we have a legal problem we need to go straight to a nice lady in a high court! :bounce:
  20. What makes you so sure he is right and you weren't?
  21. Why is the box filter at the front? Would it not be better hidden in the other back corner?
  22. A friend of ours was given the opportunity to get (for free) a very large sheet of glass out of a building being demolished. He was going to use it to build a 6ft tank. Loaded it onto a trailer but did not tie securely enough. Going around a corner it slid off. The glass went a loooong way and took him ages to clean up!
