  1. Can he pass the stone eventually with a good diet and care? That is a sad photo
  2. ah now I can see the gap between.
  3. I like the colours. They will look great with the tetra and the plants in that tank. And the fry will love the moss
  4. very nice - lots of room for the plants to grow and room for the swimmers at the front. is that a real log? From here to there I can't tell but if it's real that was a great find
  5. edit, have changed the title as have done some more homework and think I do have pygmies after all. Which is all good, I had trouble deciding which I liked best in the beginning 8)
  6. here is my main fishing net - it's a nano-net like my 2 nano-tanks  It has had 2 reincarnations - first one made by me with wire, then remodelled by my husband when my new trough-pond was deeper than the handle was long. I use this for catching my bugs - it is fine enough for just about all of them except copepods and the smallest pinhead ostracods, which do sometimes get caught anyway. My version  Husband's version Leftover fence post from landlord, part of a shower rail, aquakneadit, half of a tea strainer. Other half still in use for rinsing frozen fish food.
  7. I find it hard to believe that NZ doesn't have the workforce or the natural resources to fix itself. Most of the time it lacks a decent leader to get people together to do it is all, in my opinion anyway. I also think we could feed and clothe ourselves pretty well without needing to import if China didn't make things so irresistably cheaply.
  8. That's good news Adrienne, you must let me know how your killies are getting on too. Nikki, I think your advice is very naughty   Have also been sent some information about layout to read up on which I will do later. Gotta go walk off a massive lunch so I can fit in my tea
  9. These fish have become the most shy fish I have ever had since bringing them in the house. They are at the far end of the lounge so they are not subjected to continual movement outside the tank but there is some. The only time I see them is if the bigger ones are sitting under the filter, or if I happen to go past when they aren't expecting it and then they zip off at high speed to the first hiding spot they can find. I'm really surprised after all the good things I read about them.
  10. I think you have to be careful when picking dogs from the SPCA if you are not an experienced dog owner. Many animals are there because they have had neglectful or inexperienced owners in the first place and may not have had a happy upbringing. Some dogs will require a level of training or re-training that someone with less experience doesn't realise is needed. Not saying that good dogs don't come from the SPCA but you have to be objective about the dog you choose and make sure they exhibit sociable and healthy behaviours. It's very easy to pick a dog you feel sorry for but may not be the best thing to do if you are going to get the dog to fit in with a bustling family.
  11. Usually you slice offal thinly and fry quickly so they retain their tenderness but still get cooked. The italians also do a creamy marsala sauce for liver which is yummy too. You could also cut it finely and add to meat for the innards of a pie, another way to eat cheap meat but not feel like you were eating offal. It definitely has a different taste to meat. Chopped parsley is a good accompaniment to offal.
  12. am not sure how one could go from eating meat rarely to eating offal and enjoy it. The texture is not 'meaty' usually and if cooked too long will be rubbery and unpleasant. Personally I haven't tried ox heart but have eaten liver from time to time. If it's in a sauce with other things that provide more texture I will eat it. Otherwise I don't eat it as I am fussy. On the other hand offal can be high in protein so you can eat a small portion and still get lots of nutrition.
  13. I was seriously laughing at the prospect of noisy and smelly crickets
  14. Do they sing much in captivity? Once upon a time a cricket took up residence under the house and chirped most of the night from under the floorboards. It took a few days for him to move out and let us sleep again.

  16. Well, those of you with an eye for beauty will loooove my new filter and anti-fish sucker sponge. Will put some in the top hole another day or in the event of finding eggs. It has already got a little gunk for them to chew on for a midnight snack. Yes I have planted a big crypt in front so soon enough it will be less visible So anyway, now the tank is in the house and the Dwarves are officially Under Observation, dither fish pending evaluation.
  17. That sounded like a kind of fishy constipation. I often wonder about how fish process the wheat in their flaked and pellet food - I doubt they would get much chance to develop a tolerance for it in the wild.
