  1. it might have worked! Have put the rasbora in, and the loaches and 1 pygmy have joined in swimming about - it is TOO CUTE I am just about imploding :bounce:  Mini fish rule! :happy1: :happy1:
  2. Stage 2 has happened already, I couldn't wait for evaluation phase. Went to the shop for a thermometer and also bought 5 dwarf rasbora (boraras maculatus) and 2 dwarf chain loaches. Photos later.
  3. Stage 1 of Operation Shady is complete. Will take a photo when water has cleared. Tank looks more conventional now with wood semi-buried in the sand and moved to the middle-back. Part of the tunnel widened and placement is now parallel to sides of tank so you can see right through. Plants pushed to the edges more, some stones removed. Foreground is now mostly bare sand for swimming, with some bits at the far sides only. Fish will be under observation to see if behaviour changes. Snails have begun to take over, am thinking of getting them a dwarf chain loach as housekeeper. A fishy miracle occurred - fishy because it could have just been a fluke and fishy because it involved a fish. I took the wood out and gave it a shake to give the fish a chance to come out. It seemed they had, I had a good look inside. I set the wood down out of the water and was fiddling with the plants. After a few minutes, possibly up to 10 mins I took the wood down to the garage to see about breaking it up or widening the hole. I put the secateurs in the hole and clipped a little bit out. Set the wood down, pondered which saw to borrow. Came back to the wood and saw a fish inside on it's side where previously there hadn't been. I thought it was a goner and was about to carry on. Changed my mind, thought I had better at least dislodge it before continuing. Took wood back to the house, put it in the tank, fish disappeared. Rolled the wood around and around in the water shaking it, couldn't see the fish. No dead fish in the tank either. Took wood out, set about catching the fish to count them - lo and behold 10 live fish in the tank. Is that weird or what?
  4. We moved my 22L tank with about half of the water inside it and all plants, fish etc. We transported it on a mini pallet so it was flat and easy to get a grip on. Even with half the water it was sort of awkward for 2 people. If you had anything bigger it would be best to put on one of those flat bed wheeled trollies. Even if you have stairs is easier to carry when it's on something flat.
  5. Maybe he will post another thread called 'why did my plants die?'
  6. I'm looking into rearranging my cory tank a bit to see if it helps bring them out, and I came across this thread. http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/foru ... 90p-4.html This owner has created a beautiful planted tank but most of his fish hide. On page 4 he adds carbon to the filter and finds that they come out more. Has anyone else found this to be true?
  7. If you have time to scour a creek then have a look in Meola Creek. Starting behind the Zoo it meanders through a reserve called Jaggers Bush before going to the sea and there are all sorts of weeds and plants growing in and alongside. I found some endangered moss in there but to be honest I don't remember seeing anything with yellow colouration like what you are looking for. Then again I only went to the part nearest the carpark and wasn't looking for anything specific.

I like the colours and the mixes of fish in this tank. (not mine obviously)
  12. can you post or PM me a photo of your tank layout Nikki? I don't care if it's still under construction or still growing :nilly:
  13. Me too, I was catching minnows in the river with my friends, or stick insects, caterpillars on the nasturtiums, and keeping crabs in buckets from rockpools. I had gerbils, rabbits and fish. My dad had a water barrel that had wrigglers but I didn't yet know their potential. Today my husband made the comment 'you and your worms are taking up the kitchen!' 8)
