I realise the time + Maintenance theory myself, as we currently have 10 tanks 3ft plus here, and all I was suggesting was for those that wish to dedicate SOME time to it, it would be a good way of getting more interest into the hobby. If you have a tank and and a little plaque with it stating it is maintained by the members of fnzas saltwater section with the address to this site or little business cards with the forum address on it, you may get more people enthused about it, therefore more demand and cheaper prices, is that not what you guys are always talking about, supply and demand. B
  4. awesome shae, good to hear. I usually keep the parents with the eggs as they constantly fan them and them when they are wrigglers they look after them and they turn into shepards when they are free swimming. Best of luck, and next time try leaving the parents with the eggs, they are awesome to watch. Steve

so why don't you guys offer to do one for them, have it so you guys do one set of maintenance every x amount of time, and keep a real nice tank there, with maybe the web address to here4 for anyone that is interested into looking into one of thier own. Good to hear you enjoyed Kelly Tarltons too, must get up that way again soon. B
  6. If you want to send me an envolope with your address and a stamp on it, I can send some prunings from my plants for you. B
  7. you don't have to soak or boil, as I just rinse thoroughly and there generally isn't enough salt in the gravel to cause any harm to your fish at all, have it in 3 tanks now and never had a problem over a period of 3 - 4 years. B
  8. I had two of the CAE's and never had a problem with them, the only thing I learn't about thier aggression was if you put them in at the same time they get along fine, that is what happened to mine and they were happy as. unfortunately it ended in a suicide pact as they both jumped from thier tnk on the same night. B
  9. Your more than welcome to come up here first if you guys want and we can head round from here. B

    Guppy deaths

right, I am starting to tear my hair out over these deaths. Can Anyonme lease help!!! uss wondering, has anyone else had a spate of Guppies dying? It seems all the new ones that I have bought, (well not all, but some) of the new guppies I have bought recently from the LFS, are dying off again.. Seems strange that its not the ones I already have, seems only to be the new ones. They are not from the same LFS either. Anyone got any Ideas why this could be happening? Everything seems fine, (as in the fish do NOT look sick, and they eat well) but I am losing neons, and my rummynoses as well too.. Have dosed the tank wif Blue, and will keep an eye on them the tank is constantly losing fish, some drop off over night after looking fine the night before and some have the tails literally disappear, and all that is left ids the stringy bits which support the tail. Have spoken to Animates as they had the tank in quarinteen that we got the fish from, and they have said the same about the fish dropping off over night. This explains the fish we got from them, but doesn't explain the guppies dieing that we already had or the tetra's we lost aswell The above statements were posted by mystic and i at www.poecilia.net.nz and i have copied and pasted as i am feeling lazy tonight. Kribensis Query

i am guessing by the lack of replies that noone has come across this before which concerns me, and i don't have enough faith in any of the lfs to take it to them and see if they know. B
  13. awesome to hear you gys are getting something started. Have you tried putting posters up at the lfs and places like the notice board n the mall and the supermarket, as well as seeing if the local businesses will allow you to put them up in the window of thier store. You may find there are fishkeepers out there without internet or ewho are unaware of this site existing, you may gain more interest that way aswell. B

    Kribensis Query

Hi All, Just a query on one of our kribs. He is a largish male, in a community tank with his female and they are always colouring up to show off to each other. Thing is tho, when they arn't coloured the female is normal krib colours i.e the pale brown with the dark brown stripe, but the male always looks quite washed out, and the big concern is half his face( from the middle of the nose to the middle of the bottom of the jaw) is always a dark brown/almost black colour. I have never seen this before and am wondering if i should be concerned, he is in a 660l tank with tank mates he has been with for quite a while now. Doesn't look sick, or damaged in any way. Thanks Heaps In Advance. B

    Hi from Auckland

Hi And Welcome martind, good to have you here and yu will find lots of useful info and useful people here. if you update your profile as to where you are from, then you may also get offers to visit peoples tanks, and also can find out about your local aquarium club. B
  16. That sounds exactly like what it is Blue, and like the quote says. just drop feeding to a minimum or stop all together and you should see them disappear. B
  17. there in the trade and exchange section under medium and large tanks need to go.

    Fertiliser

do a google search for Poor Mans Dupla Drops, or PMDD. That is the one I beleive Warren uses. The other option is that Luke on the forums here also makes his own, so you could try getting in touch with him. B
  19. pop down to placemakers, they get the sheets used for wall cladding and also get polystyrene packing sheets in thier kitset kitchen pallets, I'm sure they could either save or give you some. B
  20. it is a fluro tube but the light it gives off is a purplish colour, sometimes called a gro tube, quite often used on hydroponics grow systems and often used in nurseries for raising seedlings. B
  21. also with the lights I would look at getting one or two of the "purple" tubes which provide high amounts of red light which the plants use to photosynthesise and hence they grow better. I have on purple tube and one white tube on my planted tank and add diluted chelated iron to the water and the plants are going crazy, tried the co2 but was too lazy to keep the mixture running in the diy sort, will get it going again but will get a proper one. DIY tanks

Making a tank is easy, the glass is the most important part to get right, you need to make sure the thickness is right. I spent $25 and bought a couple of corner clamps from placemakers and also bought the holdfast 202 clear silicone from there as well. Then it is just a case of getting the glass cut to size and applying silicone to the edges, I put two ice block sticks together and placed them between the two sheets of glass, which allowed me to get a thicker bead of silicone between them. Hope this helps. B
  23. my 2 cents worth, the bigger the tank the better in my opinion, as with most things if you have a small tank/container yu will end up with stunted plants. you want to make sure you give them plenty of room between plants so that they dont get skinny shooting up competing for the light. why not try running a small tube under the gravel with small holes in to rerlease nutrients into hthe substrate for the ropots to suck up. B
  24. I really like ira's idea, that would be cool. I would love to do that. hmmmmm where could I put that tank and what can I sell to buy the archer fish. B
  25. great work, no pic here tho either. B
