  1. leagally as the owner of the appliance he can electrically do what he wants with it. but yes you can use an extention cord by cutting the socket end off. if the unit already has labeling clearly showing what way and where the connections are you should be alrite, aslong as your armed with a multimeter
  2. if you already have a canister filter i would go with that, i dont really see how if a canister filter fails it will drain your tank unless you didnt secure the spray bar/ damage the canister. i suppose you could have the intake to the cannister filter in the overflow area and the spray bar in the tank itself. for the bedroom i wouldnt try bothering with a sump as i think theyre a bit tricky to get quiet JMO
  3. when my mate had no fridge he just used powdered milk
  4. probally best to remove the pebbles too as they could eat them, and bad things can happen if they eat stones. heater shouldnt really be necessary. and is the temp that low with the heater light off as i thought that heaters cant get that low? could be wrong.
  5. i dont have any but the tanks that ive seen setup are just cold water with a filter. if your not shure how to set up the tank what are they in at the moment?
  6. i was planning on running UGF with this tank, sand wouldnt work. but could in a planted nano.
  7. ive just gotten some dolomite gravel and thought that i heard the name used before, then realised that its used to raise the ph of the tank. but ive got angels etc at the moment. its such a nice looking substraite though. so how much will it raise the ph of the water? will the angels be fine in it? or should i just hurry up and by some malawais from ryan?
  8. well not as quickly as described but marble fighters do it, ive got one that ive only had a few weeks and its gone from a fairly celephane fighter to a rather blue/red guy, buti dont think hes gonna change back

    marble chip

and what if there was a bit of wood in there? would that be enough to keep the ph down to something more suitable for the fish or would the marble over power it

    marble chip

well im setting up a new tank for my mother and she wants to have marble chip as her substraite. after goping to the LFS she was told that they dont stock it as they dont recommend it as it raises the PH too much. if she was to ger marble chip in the tank how much would it raise the ph by? shes planning a 800x400x500 tank stocked with a pink kissing gourami and 2 bristle noses plus what ever else she has planed.... as a side note do you think that the tank is big enough for the kissing gourami?
  11. if its a peaceful com tank ild recomend getting rid of him now, all the ones ive had turned real nasty
  12. the sound will most likely be from the magnetic ballast, what happens with time is that the laminated sections come unstuck and the humm is from the plates moving against eachother, and magnetic ballasts come in diffrent shapes and sizes.
  13. theres also a saftey data sheet for water... im shure that theres instructions in it that if it gets splashed in you eyes you are to wash your eye with copious amounts of water...
  14. very nice, so how many did you get from the spawn?
  15. here you go, these show 4/5 of them all of these are the 'shortfins' i picked up
  16. 4 and a half months old, i would of thought that they would of been more agressive. even my blue VT is fairly relaxed in there
  17. i picked up 5 fighters in the weekend, marble pk males according to the seller, but im not completly convinced that she was right, ive looked for egg spots and seen it on some of them, and when i put in a large blue male they didnt really do anything, no flairing, nothing. so i released the blue male into the tank to try stir something up and one of the marbles decided to display and show some agression to the blue guy, and the others in the tank. i really want to breed these marbles but cant really until i can get them sexed! dont want a repeat of trying to spawn two males again...
  18. hmmmm. ild pefer to seperate but if you keep a really close eye on their conditions it should be fine, just be prepared to seperate him quickly
  19. or insulate a spare wardrobe with a small heater in it, build some sort of shelving in there.
  20. ive just moved to auckland and when i first turned on the tap i thought i was at the local swimming pools as it stunk that much of chlorine to me, im still wondering how im going to do my changes now, to dechlorinate, airate the water or just do more smaller waterchanges.
  21. the new guy allways buys! even if your just changing work areas in the company.
  22. im in hobsonville, and no not yet, im thinking about doing my cert when the water gets a little warmer
  23. the cats where fine apart from one having a little accident in the cage which got cleaned up just before we got on the ferry. didnt hear them at all unless we opend the boot to check on them then they where all 'meow meow' and happy to see us. gave them a spray of sedapet in waiuru and they where fine as. theyre loving the new place, especially the tree out frount. Quite glad now that i didnt get them knocked out as they didnt need it.
  24. i did look into it and there was an import facility that was willing to quaranteen the fish for me. you can get a list of all the registed quarenteen facilites in NZ from maf, complete with contact details. if you talk to the guys who are improting them in they can point you in the right direction
