  1. Dilute bleach (1:50) or Virkon are good surface disinfectants but they need to have a 15 minute contact time and then rinsed off with clean water before the animal can be put back. If you can't rinse the area, you can try wiping it down with a vinegar solution (but it is best to let it dry before putting the animal back). It is important to remove organic material (poo and other visible dirt) with a mild detergent or salt scrub before disinfecting.
  2. Anything big. Or two medium ones. I haven't used the CF1200 before but I hear they are quite grunty.
  3. The paper towels are much more hygienic than turf, as long as you change it regularly. The pinworms are transmitted via the faecal-oral route so cleaning up droppings is very important. These parasites are very common and they don't usually cause disease unless the animal is debilitated or conditions are right so that is probably why your vet is just watching it. If the animal has diarrhoea or weight loss then clinical disease may be present and treatment may be necessary. Treatment usually consists of fenbendazole once a week for two or three weeks.
  4. Mmmmm, I love the pics with the lemon tetras....
  5. Stunner Ant. Thanks to David for this link which I drool over at every chance I get...wishing I had my geo tank back... I personally wouldn't do a sump in the lounge again, but that's just me.
  6. By the way, last night's 4.6 was the first aftershock that caused me to loose water from the tanks...admittedly I only really filled them to the top again about two weeks ago, but still, we had two 5.0 shakes in that time and no water was lost. Was it just me, or was that pretty full-on for a 4.6?
  7. Check out this video. It is very impressive!
  8. Good to have you join us.
  9. Let us know if that works! The green sprouts are a good sign. Do you have much light getting to it?
  10. The affected leaves will not typically recover so they will eventually drop off...but are there any new leaves coming out? If so, those will be used to the new conditions.
  11. That sounds great. I am not an expert on good creek locations but I am sure someone will speak up (Codking?). I am looking forward to learning more about natives from you.
  12. It is more about nutrient imbalance. Even if you dose with antibiotics, it will not necessarily sort out the source of your problems so cyano can re apprea or you can get other types of algae. Click here to read a thread that tells more about that.
  13. Do what Ira says, shine the light so you can siphon off the shrimp without the shells and unhatched cysts. The fish can't digest those bits and they will just make a mess of the tank. I use an upside-down coke bottle (with the bottom cut off - so it looks like a funnel) with a bit of airline tubing through the cap. When I turn the aeration off the shrimp all sink into the narrow bit and a few minutes later it is easy to just siphon them out and leave the floating shells behind.
  14. I find a handkerchief works better than anything for filtering. It also helps if you use a funnel to hold the hankerchief when you are siphoning.
  15. If your canister filter has a priming pump, pumping it a few times every hour will keep some oxygen circulating in the filter or open the filter up so the surface area of the water can carry out some gas exchange. Stop feeding the fish and when the power comes back on increase the water changes and things will turn around pretty quick as long as the power hasn't been off for more than a few days.
  16. My guest room is open whenever you like Stella. It comes complete with the 'miracle guest bed' and 'miracle guest shower.' I can also arrange a tour of local people's tanks if there are things that you are interested in seeing. Our Totally Tanked club meeting is three days after you leave but it would be great if you might consider giving some of us (read: 'me') a stream tutorial of native things the weekend before - if you are available.

Indeed they are. Don't feel bad Joe, being diplomatic is quite a skill sometimes. Next time perhaps you can try a 'feedback sandwich' - something good, followed by something that can be improved on, followed by something good. For example, you could say "Wow, that is a high quality diffuser. They aren't my favourite in terms of appearance, but they sure do work well." 8)

While we are on the subject, does anyone know if we can get dual stage regulators here? I am specifically looking for a Victor brand (probably a used one if I can find it).
  20. You can sex hongsloi from about 3-4 months although some are a bit ambiguous for a while. I siphon mine at 7 days (just before they are free swimming) and feed them BBS and microworms as soon as the yolk sac is no longer visible (day 8 or 9).
  21. I had it at 24, but I still got 2/3 males (and unfortunately lost several females in the quake). I will turn it down now though because one male can serve a few females so I would rather have more females.
  22. I am making lasagne for the meeting tomorrow. Hoping some feel inspired to bring garlic bread, salad and chocolate gateaux! :bounce:
  23. Well done. You must be doing something right. Hopefully your plants will be starting to look good too.
  24. I am seriously no expert with identifying these, but I do know that Bob is an expert in crypts - he has been keeping them for 30 years or something like that and has a lot of rare types emmersed. I presume he is right, but I really have no idea. I recently got a cordata from up north and know that it is a version of blassi, but it doesn't look anything like the blassi that I have.
