  1. how would you clean the 4th tank with that many fish in it?
  2. Wish we had a grassy backyard
  3. No can't bring myself to pinching the head kind of grosses me out, slamming them is as far as I'll go..maybe it's a girl thing. Freezer? I'll try that next time - Tequila's lazy so he likes his food alive and twitching but he doesnt like chasing, we have to put his food under Tequila's nose for the lil lazy fatty to eat them lol
  4. man after reading everyone's posts I feel rather ripped supasi - that is an AWESOME deal!! Is it a double sided tank too?? Always thought about getting one to divide the living room from the dining room
  5. I always have a fun time catching one roach at a time and then slamming them onto the bottom of the terrarium hard to knock them off balance and impaired so they can't run, but the initial catching them and knocking them unconcious is quite time consuming. How does everyone else feed out roaches? Here's Tequila and his dinner:
  6. Hey Ron - the SS is at least 10cm in the body length now (not including tail) always the first to food offerings, closely followed by the Turq and the Pigeon :bounce: :bounce: It seems like mine are on steriods lol Lyndyloo - you can get either Droncit worming tabs and just dissolve before dosing or Prazi is a cattle wormer (correct me if I'm wrong) that you can ask the vets for I think?
  7. I started with a 65L Guppy tank then upgraded to a 450L Discus tank.. no doubt you'll be headed that way some day :bounce: Welcome!
  8. I know! and I wonder why I'm a poor uni student lol - our big 5' tank in the living I got the tank itself off TM for $400 which cost the same as getting my 2' tank made - it's a bargain methinks
  9. usually already setup tanks on TM are WAY cheaper and comes with everything and if you don't like the community then you could always sell off the fish and get new fish BUT if you're like me and a bit wary of 2nd hand goods then new will cost a bit more.
  10. For my 280L Angel setup it's cost me: $400 for bare tank made (got it for a bargain 'cos we our terrarium made at the same time) $200 filter from LPS - also a good deal (1500L/H rate) $60 gravel from LPS $40 2' light casing (second hand from TM) $10 light tube from lighting specialist wholesalers $40 various bought plants $50 8 X Angels (including courier from Auckland) $30 Fishfood Total: $830 from scratch - to date
  11. God we had a 3 stage setup breeding locust for Tequila - SO time consuming but at least they don't chirp, supply was continuous and weirdly we started getting albino ones which were quite cool. started with something like 25 adults and endd up with TOO many and the worst thing was the small ones found a way to scale glass and escape through a hole allowing wires in it was gross to find small crickets everywhere in the house had to lie to mum and tell her they were wild ones which must have found a way in lol

    American Tank

Have you got your java buried? Always thought if you buried the rhizome of the java fern then it will rot? I have mine attached to the driftwood for a natural look - so what is your final community composition? 'Cos it did sound like a weird combination before
  13. they're hard to bring back from the brink and I find it more humane just to euthanase ..lost one that was being picked on so severely by the big guys from another breeder big bullies. Mine weren't happy last night - had their routine prazi dip (also an excuse for me to weigh them to see how much form they've gained) and I have to say Ron the snakeskin of yours is a downright piggy lol did not expect all that force and mess from it
  14. they don't do that great of a job I have 4 in my tank but I also use my glass cleaner too..find bristlenoses can't scrape away the tough stuff
  15. If you wanted a good algae controll I would suggest a SAE but your tank would be far too small, my GBAs - the golden ones just started breeding now at 6/7cm and I've had them for almost a year now.
  16. Really? But I picked up yesterday's paper with that on the 3rd page?
  17. if your tank had been bigger you could have even tried putting both females in with the male and see if that would encourage parental instincts
  18. I'm really wary when it comes to cooking chicken and getting chicken filling from sandwich stores - my mate who works at a huge chain sandwich store got campylobacter (spelling looks a bit dodgy) poisoning from eating some chicken fillets what was worse was that they gave her antibiotics which turns out she was allergic to and couldn't talk and her face went frozen on one side lol halarious for us observers cos she was drooling
  19. they did something similar like this in British Columbia with Salmon migration, due to the dams the salmons couldn't get far upstream for spawning so they made "salmon steps" lol
  20. did anyone read the Dom post yesterday? they had 9 week old kittens who had their hind paws cut off by kids! those kids took the kittens to a vet clinic tellingt the receptionist that the paws fell off and left - result being two kittens with one amputated hind leg each. THAT'S SO SAD
  21. may be bad to have live food in with eggs...plus there's always the possibility of parents getting wrigglers mixed up with live food. If yours are breeding as often as mine used to (once every 2 weeks) I tended to take one batch and raise it myself and leave them with the next batch. It comes to experience of the parents and some just don't make good parents - my female would always eat the eggs but the male when left with the eggs would take good job of the eggs, but I found his fanning of the eggs to be inadequate. I'd get about 30 surviving fry when hatched using an airstone but when I left the batch to the dad the hatching rate was only 10 or less.
  22. I found my 10,000K tube from the local electric wholesalers work really well in growing my plants (I don't even use much fert) - only set me back $15 whereas if you got it from a petshop think it was quoted arounf $40? Why are you set on using Daltons? Have you thought of using a smaller grain pebble? Personally haven't used Daltons before but I'd imagine it would be easier to siphon and clean a tank with slightly larger pebbles - and you need your water quality very high since you've got Discus (was for Discus wasn't it?)
  23. hard if it's Discus..they should get fed more often than most fish - especially juvie tanks
  24. yes but not as evil as him and I don't have any liverspots on my head either ...wanting to do a ruins type of background for the Angel tank so I thought the skull would be perfect!
