  1. I found a sun bleached seagull skull at the beach a while ago (either an albatross or a HUGE seagull - beak length about 10cm?) and I'm thinking about popping it into my Angel display tank surrounded by Phoenix's sag when it arrives. Just wanting to know if it would change the pH of the water since I know bird skeleton's more light weight etc compared to mammal bones. Thanks
  2. the piece of driftwood the male picked as his 'cave' is quite huge with only a small gap in the front so the Discus won't be able to get to them but he shares that cave with my 10 chain loaches I wish I had the time to separate them and grow them out separately  I'll let nature take its course and see what happens
  3. don't worry too much, might just be bit stressed from their traumatic experience
  4. mine gets bloodworms every 3rd night (Discus tucker every 2nd night and spirulina discs every 1st night).. I thought I would've damaged them when I siphoned them up last night but yeah they were orangey coloured so they would've been fertilized already? What do you feed them on after they hatch? Just veges?
  5. congrats Elaine! Our lil one has taken to the worst kind of pickiness..won't touch mealworms or even crickets - goes on a hunger strike for waxworms so no luck in veges yet but might try grapes since everyone else's seem to love it
  6. there are some species of poisonous frogs but none that you can get your hands on here...mmm we're thinking about investing into couple of mice to breed from for Tequila..have been told Rats are better? Any thoughts
  7. the GlowLux we have is 10,000K and gives out a purple glow
  8. just going to wait for them to get a bit bigger before I list them for sale...they're at around 5-7 leaves stage so quite small That sounds interesting! you've got to take a pic once that's done for us to have a look at
  9. one thing about sand being plants get uprooted easily and you can't siphon sand like you can with gravel. Sorry couldn't help you there I gave the last of all my Indian Ferns to MJ a couple of months ago I've only got bunches of Anubias nanas propagating
  10. I'd imagine beef hearts to be quite sustainable since it usually goes to waste
  11. you shouldn't worry 'cos they usually drop to that during courier, discus are hardy enough fish - don't feed them much until you've gradually brought the temp up.
  12. Welcome and enjoy your stay
  13. that's good cos that part of the lighting unit would be the most expensive part make sure you put up a pic of your completed tank for all of us to have a nosey
  14. ...not killed...just partially maimed...and read your sales ad cos I'm wanting more
  15. what part of welly you from? We go to a place in Petone on Nelson St (some lamp specialist cannot remember name)... So you've already got the light fittings too? (reflector or case) I don't see why not - you might want to plant tall plants near the back for a backdrop and opt for shorter and shorter plants as it gets nearer to the front of the tank.
  16. ....that's risky but without a filter you'll have to do MORE waterchanges if you don't mind. And also depends on what fish you have, some fish poo a lot plus rubbish builds up in the gravel over time too. You might be able to get away with a small tank fully planted out but even then I'd be wary
  17. Phoenix - I'm so jealous...my Sag I got from you won't grow and not only that but I've managed to melt even more of it do you think it could be from me pouring water directly on it? How do you add your water during wc?
  18. It says on the package, you can get 18,000K bulbs from petstores but they're quite a bit darer - from memory I got my 10,000K bulb for $15 from the local lighting+lamp wholesaler. How long is your tank? I have a 5foot tank and I'm using 4foot lighting
  19. your bettas I reckon would love Indian Fern..if you don't prune it will grow to semi-cover the top of your tank, when I had Indian Fern they hung out at the floating part all the time plus side being they grew like wild fire in my tank. or various hygro's (the stargrass type) or even big tiger lotuses.
  20. those TM lights don't look like the type you suspend though...metal halides can get expensive and you got to factor in they get quite hot etc etc... Port Nicholsons Glass do a good job with custom made tanks did us a real good deal when we needed two tanks urgently - he did one using marine grade metal instead of the normal pine and it looked really modern if that's the look you're going for with the hanging metal halides.
  21. hmmm...if they're adults they might pull through, how low did the temp go? I had my temp down to 23 once when I added one too many buckets of cold water over summer
  22. well 10,000K is sufficient enough if you're wanting a well planted tank, with this lighting my Tiger Lotus and Ozelot Sword have been sprouting new leaves like mad. C02 - not that essential...depends on HOW dense you want your tank Fert - JBS fert balls are brilliant around heavy root plants cleaning - just siphon around the plant if need be (depends on the fish you keep, some fish need cleaner water)
  23. I still have a tiny survivor from my last batch...I neglected them due to lack of time (had about 20 when Cam took the parents ) and thought they had all gone towards the light until I saw him as I was about to empty out the little tank - surprised he survived so long without food..can only guess he had been feeding off his dead siblings. He is surprisingly quite a little chubb
  24. I haven't found NSL Discus ganules in a while been trying my Discus on this other type of colour enhancing granule..which is slightly bigger and Discus won't eat until I've ground them smaller with my mortar and pestol adds another 3mins to my morning chores! But could I suggest more frozen prepared meaty meals? As far as I'm concerned there's only one type so there could be a market if your mate could make his cheaper
