  1. if they have something they get destroyed I think.
  2. its not the critters, but what they can carry.
  3. Naah, I didn't work last weekend, just did some other stuff for myself and a few others on here in the back room thing on the computer. I'll be there this Sunday between 10 and 4 as well. It's a neat tank and I think its on special too?
  4. I am working at animates tomorrow, so come in and say hello if you can. Is that specialty enough? Ill have a lorikeet on my shoulder most likely 8)
  5. Their reasons are justified. they want to make sure that our country is untouched - like its clean green image. IF someone wants to import live animals, you gots to pay for it. Discus wholesale for about $4 in South America. Then the importers buy them off the harvesters, and/or the breeders, and bring them here (that is the shortest possible chain - in reality the supply chain is longer). The retail here for about $150. The parity in price is not all a retail mark up - but is fairly indicative of the costs of quarantine - and that is after realising economies of scale and importing literally thousands of fish in a single shipment. It can take several years to recoup the intital costs associated. lets assume, they do make it to your door step, which they will not. MAf would then pay you a visit, fine you for intentionally bypassing the system and confiscate and destroy the organisms. And that's just the start of it.
  6. Hi and welcome! so you got the aq one 620T? I quite like that tank, its good for plants and small community fish. You should plant the tank (need gravel for the base) and then cycle your tank. you don't need much for that - just a fish to start off with. Planting the tank is easy. your light will allow you to grow java fern (remember not to dig it in the ground), amubias, cabomba, sag. subulata - and a few other sag species among others. could even do tiger lotus in there. with this particular model of tank you will not need an air pump but as you increase the fish population, you may need it unless you get an external cannister filter with that tank - 9strongly recommended). Ask away if you need more info.
  7. wow. they are fast growers! The synos hatch just before the other babies, then after their egg sacs are consumed, they prey on the defenseless babies. I remember watching a Nat-Geo / Discovery doco about it a while ago. It was really cool.
  8. Your plants should technically be ok. I use a LOT of flourish and the sag. is never affeted. Val is a little sensitive to it - though people on theplantedtank.net use it fine with not complaints. I know you won't be overdosing it with your discus in the tank, so I don't think that is the issue. your lotus melting away could be because of the light - but to be honest you are supposed to change the tubes every 11months or so. Not changing the tubes immediately after that won't really cause that much of a problem. How is the sag. subulata doing? and what lights were these again?
  9. No. The reason you use an importer is not just to get them here. It is because they have quarantine facilities here in NZ. It will on average cost between $20k and $30k for a facility, so unless you have one - you will need an importer.
  10. i would not feed meat for those 2 weeks. just feed them colourbits.
  11. automatic feeder? there are some cheap ones on TM
  12. you worry too much. go on holiday and leave your fish be without wc's. they should be fine. if you are really worried put some carbon in your filter - even though you hate it.
  13. I mean moving the tank, and uprooting it to re plant or landscape. its messy stuff. it is really really fine and light under water so will go *poof* everywhere.
  14. when the last 2 letters can't make a word, you use the third and second last letters. Iceberg
  15. I just made a list of what we can get through wholesale, and you posted this. As ryan said, not available.
  16. they change pattern as they mature.
  17. you should be good. IF you are planning on moving the tank around or removing gravel stay away from daltons and the similar.
  18. That would be very wise. No point of DIY CO2 on that tank. get good lights and you should be sweet. even normal gravel and substrate can be used to grow plants with a few modifications.
  19. how large is the tank? DIY will be useless on a large tank.
  20. THat's terrible. I would have salvaged as much glass as i could have and then used it for an upcoming project. glad to hear the day didn't end on a bad note.
