  1. Leviathan Yes they will breed. I think it is a bit harsh attacking people who breed mixed bristlenose's as most people would not know they are different species ( if in fact they are ). The target you should be aiming for are the pet shop owners who sell them to us uneducated public. The first time I heard about it was recently on this forum. I have had fish on and off for thirty years and have never been told by a pet shop owner. Many petshops by fish from locals and I would not be surprised if there are many hybrids in circulation.
  2. Even in the wild you will find them in warm water during the summer.
  3. I had some in my tropical tank for a year or two with no problems until one or two of my other fish got larger then they disappeared, dont know if they just got old or got eaten. They never bred probably because of no salt in tank.
  4. Eastland aquarium still operating in Gisborne. Has really good pices on some fish at times. And this link may be handy for people wo travel and like to check out pet shops: http://yellow.co.nz/search.ds?what=Pet+ ... earch=true
  5. I agree. You have done plenty of research. Excellent job. Here is another thread that may also help if you havent spotted it. Young newts that have spent a bit of time on land can look funny when they try to get back in the water, they have a hard time trying to sink. :bounce: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/newt-pics-vt30400.html
  6. Definitely need a mesh lid as they will climb out. It will also help to keep fruit flies in if you feed them to your newts. I find about 5-7 cm of water is fine with island so that they can get out of water when they wish. I dont use filter because of shallow water and newts do not like strong current, I just change half the water each week. They dont need a big tank. My tank is not set up as a display tank.
  7. Had no experience with these fish but maybe if you made tank dark for a while they will get a break from liplocking.
  8. I understand that white spot can get into the tank when you change water. The cysts are in the water and most town supply treatments do not get rid of them. Some whitespot cures have more of the blue than others. It occurs in my tank once or twice every 3-4 months. That is why I dont have clown loaches. They are very prone to getting whitespot.
  9. Yes know the road. I live at the opposite end of town.
  10. You sure you want to say this. They may see it and decide to add it to their list of protected wildlife so that you cant keep them.
  11. Welcome. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  12. I sent Kim email using address off first web site on page but did not hear back. Then wesite changed a few days later. :bounce:
  13. I have only been a member here for a few weeks myself but so far I have found that there are plenty of like minded people in this forum. But care should be taken because there are some unscrupulous ' 8) ' people around who would not hesitate in taking advantage of you and stealing your pet. An aqaintance of mine has recently had his aviary raided with many finches missing or left dead. The other thing we need to get over is being selfish by not making agreement to get rare species together. Do you know the sex of your tortoise and is there someone out there with a mate that we can get together to mutual benefit of owners and survival of species in NZ. Good luck

    My tank :)

When you getting a bigger tank? Always liked Africans. Looks really great.
  15. Male japanese newt Male (top) and two females Japanese newt (top) and chinese newt (bottom) All my newts. Chinese ones at the top. Newt tank. Not a diplay tank. More for breeding. Newts like plant life in tank to lay eggs on. Adult one are also useful in eating cabbage caterpilars.
  16. My turtles love digging in the gravel keeps them occupied for ages looking for food and gives them exercise.
  17. I use this one ,each has a switch. I think the brand is Arlec, available at most hardware shops and I think I paid about $35 for it. Ive found these good. Had some cheaper ones with switches but I found the swithes wore out after a few months.
  18. Small newts also like aphids when in season. I have a thin layer of gravel in the bottom of my tank as it seems to make it easier for them to get around, they got something to grip, mine were not so keen on glass bottom. The water in mine is about 4-5cm deep and I usually change about half the water each week. :bounce: :bounce:
  19. Also like to suggest you put a space between the last word and the image code, and after code as well. You can always edit your message if it does not work first time  . I had to edit mine about 5 times before I got it right. When using photobucket you use image code at bottom of choice list double click and past in your message box with space at both ends and that is all you need. Good luck.
  20. turtle tower (Reeves) Eastern beareded lizards
  21. Its not only colour change but a complete change in pattern. I checked on net but none shown had changed as much. Just curious as to what they will become.
  22. Does anyone keep these loaches? It is interesting to watch as their patterns slowly change. They become quite different to what they were when I bought them. Here is a photo of a young one And this one is a year older, about 13cm Have another slightlylarger but it hasnt changed as much.
