  1. one thing i was quite impressed by with animate on their aqua fun day was they had a container for nets with some kind of fish safe sanitiser in it , and a rule that the net couldnt go into another tank without first being returned to the sanitiser while i was disapointed to see a nice sump system go unused its good to see every tank is seperate there running hang on back filters very easy to quickly slap a "under quarentine" sign on if something goes wrong. and i do also have to say the 3 stores here in chch have become better with the fish side of things in the last year
  2. were just lucky we have no chlorine in our tap water down here aye alan
  3. yea i got into cichlids with the intenetion of having a male only tank that didnt last long
  4. they have a big egg sack atm its same size as the eggs so they arent really swimming around much so still in the tumbler . do you hold the female in your hand or something when you strip them or in a net
  5. yea reds from nav .lost the dad not long after i got them he wasnt great coloured but his offspring look more promising. time will tell, maybe this generation could be better again any ideas about how long i leave them in the tumbler?
  6. noticed at random last week had two adult females holding , decided to strip one a few days ago wasnt very sucessful got 10 or so eggs so she probably has more in her the eggs i stripped got fungused so i did some more research and built an air powered tumbler and stripped the other female today got about 30 or so fry with egg yolks still attached managed to get about 20 of them into the tumbler (im sure there is a better way to do it than the way i did the tumbler works well so fingereds crossed the fry survive. the peacocks are A. marlieri (red) im not sure what the fathers colour is like as he hasnt fully coloured up and is quite small i have a lot of small males but two are almost 5cm long so im guessing one of them is the father as i have no other peacocks in the tank , the females are the adult mothers of all the smaller fish . are the wrigglers subceptable to fungus as the eggs are? any help gratefully accepted
  7. good fish food the oscars would make short work of them
  8. my mate has a trout problem lol he has been a keen trout fisherman for 15 years but is now keeping south american cichlids and finding out about the damage trout are doing to the natives and mafs protection of them is doing to this hobby he now feels guilty going trout fishing i said go but dont put them back. now back on topic these dwarfs are they in the south island too?
  9. get some driftwood from a river or the beach if its already water logged and sinks its better than havinng a floater
  10. how big is the tank if its really small you can get a kit off ebay that uses a peltier effect cooler fitted into a hang on back filter i dont think it would be effective for anything over 50l and possibly by the time you buy it and pay for postage you could probably pick up a secondhand chiller here for a lil bit more
  11. i guess the key is not going to fine so that it blocks up all the time and not going to large so that fish can get thru . ive lost a few fish to "going behind the background" but right now its only my albino sen that goes behind it where my heater and inlets are in a few months he wont be able to fit but its good at the moment i can feed him ox heart with out worring about the africans getting to it
  12. what about a hang on back filter would this fit?
  13. small decorative figs, spanish moss it you can find it also ivy grows well and looks neat
  14. a lot people walk to torrent bay/anchorage it take around 4 hrs from marahau then catch the water ferry back there is a nice hut at anchorage and a lagoon between there and torrent bay up behind the lagoon is a spot on a river called cleopatras pool it has a natural hydroslide carved into the rock. both toreent bay and anchorage are nice beaches and from memory bark bay is another 3 hours walk perhaps a plan could be to catch the water taxi to bark bay then walk to torrentbay/anchorage stay the night then kayak to marahau the next day i miss living in the area lived there for 17 years!
  15. it wont melt it even if parts of it are touching the poly as the water around it wont let the heater get hot enough to melt it
  16. yep mjeasure it up and cut it into three pieces then carve it with them together if you are clever you could have some kind of overlap carved out so its not noticable
  17. id say you would be struggling to get a rio 400 in there i own an lxi civic sedan even if its wide enough the tank wont fit in thru the door because of the height i couldnt get my euroview 90 in there
