  1. its kind of like buying a nice leather couch compared to buying a couch at the warehouse it looks really nice but function wise its not a lot better , my opinion though is if you have the money go for the juwel
  2. they aren't being bothered at the moment by anything , but yes im keeping a eye on them it tends to be the blue melanochromis that does the damage also sometimes the dominant kadango but they only pick on my peacocks ! , the 1s i have at the moment are holding up well fingers crossed ive got a prime pink and a marble peacock that didnt make the photos since ive added them the chasing isnt directed at the 1 fish . i understand the livingsonii will get huge will have to keep an eye on his temperament , ive also got 2 malawi eyebiters that will get rather large too! but i have to say my favourite fish of the lot is the red shoulder i found him listed as a blue zebra on tm, he was in a rio 180 with a small oscar and a convict and a jewel which where all scared of him!
  3. still a bit cloudy but all my fish are in there and loving it tank is 5ftx2ftx2ft so 530l before anything went into it but considerably less now the background is in i built the hood myself it houses a 150w 10k metal halide. filtration is 1 cf2200 and a jebo 819 filled with course calcite and dolomite sand for some buffering the outlet of this runs a small fluidised bed filter before returning to the tank . there is a 3000lph wavemaker running in the top right hand corner this agitates the surface so i get nice ripples of light across the bottom the heater is hidden behind the backgrond with the filter intakes its a jager 300w. heres some pics of the fish not the best photos as i havent cleaned the outside of tank and the cloudy water . lionhead male ,big electric yellow male, small nimbochromis livingstonii , some kribs and an unknown peacock red shoulder peacock male , sunshine peacock male, kadango male, big yellow again red shoulder , kadango no 2 , blue melanochromis (johanni or maingano?), male auratus, male jewel , male convict ps this is what happened to the old cichlid tank(which yes i only set up ealier this year)
  4. spoon

    ID please??

    maybe somekind of leucistic melanochromis?
  5. those west coast beaches aye! my dad collects pieces like those and carves and polishes them by the way next time im over the coast ill come have a look at your tanks
  6. maybe some convict fry reevesta i feed my fig 8 mini krill
  7. probably be a week or two before i get rid of the cloudiness and paint residue doing a complete waterchange takes a long time on this tank lol and i will be trying to do 1 a nite
  8. i have a python does the same thing as your hose lyndyloo but with a turn of the bottom it will also suck water out of the tank too no syhons
  9. i used a similar one but i dont recommend it if you have smaller fish in the tank its in . i had barbs and neons get stuck between the glass and the betta tank and die
  10. um dyers rd landscape supplies i think thats what its called, its a by product from stone carpet and very cheap too $18 a 20kg bag
  11. its a fine limestone chip dyed black so will probably fade to a dark grey , i got it at a garden centre here they had different colours even a bright red
  12. new tank with background nearly finished going to be for my africans, MH lighting to get the light ripples happening over the black sand .
  13. my rift lake africans wernt being photogenic tonite so here is a photo of some riverine cichlids jewels from navarre best colours ive seen photo dosent do them justice(nor does the dirty tank) kribs i got from REVEESTA last nite, happy lil fellows they are ( if ur wondering the guppy breeder in the background is to huse the sand i have val planted in as i will try this out when my new tank is up and running)
  14. spotlights like this http://www.nzlightingltd.co.nz/shop/Bul ... Titan.html the round glass cover is a uv filter you can smash it out carefully
  15. you would be better replacing the 13w t5s with 20w t8s or 2 power compacts the t5s used here arent the very high output ones like in the jewel tanks
  16. they like hang on back filters they will sit on the glass just below the water falling into the tank
  17. i used to work at the rubbish dump that backs onto willowbank we had a weka running around there with the pukekos , ducks, hens and a rooster! we got hold of willow bank to come and get it rather than it get run over by vehicles , im not sure if they ended up catching it they baited the trap with a dead baby chicken ! they said they would eat anything along those lines, savage things. i couldnt understand what all the fuss was about as there are heaps in other places just none around the city i guess - rare as hens teeth
  18. i know the feeling in the long run you will end up either having africans or a reef tank or a tank with monster fish its the end result of MTS
  19. well they are neither tropical nor coldwater, temperate would be the best word to describe them(18-22deg) they love lots of current , the more the better. i have found jbl tabis to be a good diet for them
  20. got to be careful with large amounts of milk its ecotoxic to aquatic organisms!
  21. i was having dinner at harringtons when i felt a slight sway but no 1 else seemed to notice to i put it down to my paranoia even though the lightshades where swinging
  22. i have heard of this happening before mine did it too (no longer have them ) i know people that have just a small container of water in the tank so they are less likely to drown. my sourthern bells reguarly spend a long time underwater with no ill effects, perhaps whistlers arent built to do this? something to look into could be a false bottom http://www.amphibiancare.com/frogs/arti ... ottom.html will keep them moist but not let them drown
  23. dont forget if the bulbs really old it wont be much use aneway
  24. i understand importing fish has got harder in recent years, but it would be good for someone to import one off specimens that you dont normally see there are fish out there i would pay big money just to get them in the country, regardless if it was a big risk of losing my money i have found since the new testing rules came in its also harder to get more delicate fishes like indian glassfish as no one wants to import them as they know they will lose over the testing threshold in transit.
