    Cycling

Ohk so today I pulled down my 300L coldwater aquarium. Put my goldfish in the pond outside and re-homed everyone else. Didn't touch the filter at all as this was cleaned not long ago so everything should cycle through pretty fast. Anyway I will still be cycling as if it was brand new. My question is out of the following fish which would be the best fish for cycling? Harlequin Rasbora Glowlight Danio Or Blueline Rasbora? I'm getting neons aswel but would prefer not to cycle with these. Thanks in advance! :bounce:
  3. Thats AMAZING. I wish I had that at my house
  4. Aren't you just a bundle of positive fluff.... My landlord doesn't mind the tanks so would definitely depend on the person. My only advice is find somewhere you can stay for ages because lugging around fish tanks if you end up moving flats often gets old fast. Oh, and also live with people you trust because there are people who get drunk and decide to see what fish do when they are drunk  among other 'nice' experiments.
  5. EVERYTHING happens for a reason. Sometimes fate just yanks you out of your comfort zone. I love it. And I'm glad your focussing on the positives! :bounce:
  6. My cats just stopped using them when they got to about 6 months. If I accidentally close the door and they can't get out overnight they either hold on or go in the bath plug hole of all places, which is really clever and then I just turn the tap on and away it goes! lol
  7. One of my tank's has a few scratches in it from the previous owners. God only knows what they were using to scrub algae off the glass. Is there a product I can get that buffs out the scratches as I am stripping it shortly and would be a great time to do it. :bounce: Hmmmm cheers!
  8. my friend once got "I like your teeth I think they're shiny" She was like... UMMMM... I'm just gonna go stand over here my favourite... "hey! can I have your number?" ...It's in the phone book... "but I don't know your name?" ...Yeah ? that's in the phone book too... *walks away*
  9. Are you keeping your goldfish in a heated tank? If not then they will notice the drop in temp at night and know it's still winter. Goldfish prefer shallow water to breed, though they can be bred in tank they often breed in the warm shallows of outdoor ponds during summer. Make sure you have plenty of weed for the eggs to drop into as both male and female try and eat every egg in sight after the deed is done. Another thing to bare in mind is to condition them before breeding. Easiest way to do this is to switch diets to 100% live food. Lots of blood worms, live daphnia etc When they're ready the males develope white 'pimples' on their cheeks (almost look like whitespot) and chase the females continueously. Anyway hope this helps. :bounce:
  10. There are several species of fish that eat snails and/or baby snails, also trademe often has aquarium snail traps. I have about 10 pond snails and 10 ramshorns in my coldwater tank and I can't seem to get them to breed.... There is also a product that kills snails and not fish.

    Goby's

there are several gobys that are freshwater, though I've only seen bumblebee goby's in NZ. Rhinogobius spp. Chlamydogobius eremius Padogobius bonelli
  12. Actually "whitebait" refer to a number of species young.

    Fresh water shrimp

"during the summer" being the key words. They aren't naturally found in tropical climates year round. Short bursts maybe, warm during the day, cool at night maybe, but in the wild they also have the option to move to cooler water if they want, deeper pools, faster flowing etc. In a tank they don't have the choice.
  14. Welcome to the forum! Yeah my fish don't like my flatmate and his don't like me! and when I went away for a week my Paradise fish went off his food almost completely! haha

    Fresh water shrimp

They do but I'd argue that's cruelty. They aren't naturally found in water the same temperature as tropical tanks...

    Fresh water shrimp

Ah No. 110% freshwater. Way up in the Kaimais. But still alot closer to the sea than rivers around Mt Ruapehu etc.

    Fresh water shrimp

No. Shrimp are found upstream not too far from saltwater. Koura are found in most freshwater systems.

    Fresh water shrimp

If you want saltwater ones just get them from the sea? As far as I'm aware the ones in rock pools are the same or similiar species.

    Fresh water shrimp

They're freshwater shimp, that I keep in cold freshwater lol Caught them here in Tauranga, Don't really intend on breeding them as will just go back and get more when the weather warms up. And I don't mind your questions! I like being helpful :bounce: When I caught them there was a whole community under one large rock... And I just took my tank nets and fished them out one by one. They are also found in and around rocks in shallow water, usually slow moving and full of algae I've found.

    Fresh water shrimp

I have about 30 in my 300L tank. They only seem to really come out when I do a water change and move around the tank in small groups. Quite cute really, The large females have different colourations and patterns. Some have stripes, some are kinda a light brown/orange, some with black spots. Oddly though I hardly ever see the big females and I have no idea where they hide. Never seen them breed but I've only been keeping them for about 5 months. One got sucked down the hose and out onto the lawn during last weeks water change, usually they're fast and avoid the vaccum, 10 minutes before I found it crawling across the ground! Put it back in the tank and he seems perfectly fine. Definitely worth keeping!

    Koura

Hahaha love it Stella, I'm so going to use that! Dispite my shrimps being small and see-through many people get excited and drool when they see them...
  22. what does it matter? I can't write about that on wiki anyways? I didn't post this so everyone can berate and degrade her.
