  1. a couple of zebra (striata) loaches will keep the population to zero, they dont get big either. alternatively get Dwarf chains, they are happiest in groups of 5 or more and at $20-25 each can get expensive

    Tanning

Boil the snot out of the wood for 20 mins, change water repeat. 90% of the tannins will be gone easy if its small, hard if big
  3. My vote Bristle nose, drift wood in tank + BN = loads of Cr*p
  4. Kribs. they are small, pretty and undemanding re water hardness. Nice rocky aquascape, few plants if you want em.
  5. Boil the heck out of it for an hour or so, or soak it in the bath full of hot water for a few days, changing water as much as you can be bothered. Most of the tannins will leech out
  6. the # of barbels is an indicator too, there are about 5 diff species that get called flying foxes, the most common IMO is the SAE
  7. I don't know what you mean.....
  8. My favourite winter warmer is my wife...and I'd prefer not to share

  10. You guys scare me There is a very good reason electricians train for 4 years before they get their ticket. There are very strict guidelines on what a home owner can and cant do, just because it "works" doesnt mean it is safe. FOR GODS SAKE! IT CAN KILL YOU! If anyone is thinking about messing with electricity PLEASE! ring me first for free advice. Owen Lingard Project Engineer Hennessy Electrical Engineering 07 849 2355

  12. The Waikato Aquarium society was lucky enough to have Charles Mitchell come along to our meeting this month at the Hamilton Zoo, I can confirm he has captive bred giant Kokopu amongst other "impossible to breed natives". Charles is expecting another new batch early this month, should his predictions prove to be accurate. As the Waikato aquarium society has been asked to set up displays of native fish for the zoo, Stella's work will be invaluable to us and to future generations, I welcome and encourage her (already kindly offered) input into our endeavours to educate the public on our natives. DEATH!!

More of a moan than anything, I have lost so many fish to rampant whitespot ever since I got back from holiday, the fry I could handle, didnt expect them to recover, but now I've lost 3 out of 4 of my Suri's despite dosing, raising temp and aeration. I'm bummed, they were big fish they should have handled it better...are Geo's sensitive to white spot cure? I gave em a full dose, Oscar, jeweled and Nicaraguan all covered but sweet as, still hungry and swimming around as if nothing is wrong.....stupid fish
  14. I use a large hard pellet for mine, otherwise he just mashes em up and most of it came out his gills, It also fills his mouth up better so the other fish get a shot while he's chewing  guts. sometimes i give him a whole big shrimp just to keep him busy while the others eat...although he's grown so may have to move to prawns.
  15. Next Event This Sunday, 2.30-5.00pm Hamilton Zoo Guest speaker Charles Mitchell (he successfully breeds Whitebait and giant kokapu!) Charles is going to go over our ideas re setting up our first Zoo display, which has been requested to be a native tank. We will be having a Sausage sizzle, spot prizes and fun for the family, come along and see our new home.
  16. Well Done Stella, You should come up to Hamilton on Sunday, we have Charles Whitmore coming in to help us with our plans for our Zoo Native tank. (He had the Kokopu stand at the fish show last year)

They are great fish, get another 3 for them to be happy, they cruise around like a pack of crazy puppies

    Loach ID

95% sure its a dwarf chain loach
  19. Thanks for that Whetu, I wasnt sure about the root trimming thing, I may need to tidy up the swords roots I think. As for the new conditions, I am setting it up as a proper planted tank so light ferts etc will be done properly once I rebuild it.

    co2

yes Do a search for recipies, there are plenty on the web
  21. Thanks guys, as usual the cheap ass way is not best, I have heated the tank and am dosing with Flourish..Apparently the algae blooms happen if the nitrate/phosphate balance gets outta wack...Im hoping the boffins at seachem no thier stuff. I am waiting for a 2l bottle of excel to arrive then I will be in business..that is a financially failing business As for lights, a bunch of 6500K T5's & T8's will be my choice..as I have most of the gear already.
  22. I am sorting my community tanks out and planting them properly with proper substrate etc. I have taken cuttings from my existing plants (the parents are scrappy, have snails and lanky due to lack of proper care/light etc) What I want to do is get these cuttings cranking! I have a spare aquarium and have put a nice layer of sand down as a rooting medium and have them under water. What I had planned to do was get a liquid general fert and some excell, intense light and go for gold. plants I have Osiris and amazon sword, Java fern, Combomba, some dwarf crypts and some other odds and sods... wisteria I think Possible issues temp (I dont want to heat the water if I can help it, power bill was $400 last month ) By using general fert (i have some phosphrogen in the shed) will I get algae blooms? All I really want to do is get these cuttings roted & growing well so when I put them in the aquarium I get them established asap..I have patience issues
  23. HEH I got into keeping fish to keep me off, online games. As far as MMORPG you cannot go past Wold of Warcraft, its so dam pretty and has worked out many of the bugs previous games I have played had. It does cost tho and is very addictive, I am avoiding it  Dofus is amusing, it has a very interesting community and seems to attract way more female players than other games, It has a small amount of free to play areas which can give you a good idea of how it works, there was the next evolution called wakfu that may be in open beta by now..I dont check for fear that I will start up again
