    Hi all

Welcome on board Puff, there are plenty of Reptile people on here, share your experiences, ask questions, most people are pretty friendly.
  3. I just read a good article on getting a good glosso mat, buy heaps and go overboard with the light, its the only way of stopping it from growing upwards.
  4. get a school of pygmy chain loaches they are so cool in a big pack of about 9 or 10 they remind me of little fox terriers or ferrets. chuck in a couple of striata loaches and you will never have to worry about snails ever again. HFF Mt Roskil has a special on Dwarf Chains atm, about 1/2 the price we pay down here in Hamilton.
  5. Go visit him and take some friends so he can afford it, although he wont get any work done yakkin about fish.... eh Mark
  6. I know that look in the eye of your youngest Johannes.....it spells trouble, mine has it all day long
  7. You and Mystic should get a coven/Blood bank going There seems to be a lot of interest in that down your way, some of the most interesting folks came from Wellington when I was looking into that stuff before I entered my straight, suburban, married with 2.3 kids phase

    rubber suckers

It may be that Whitianga's VAAST array of fish shops, tend to be more about catching and cooking fish than keeping them alive But seriously if you have access issues out there give me a PM and I can buy some and post them to you.
  9. 12 hrs a day is about a good average
  10. The chasing of the female is par for the course as far as platies goes, he will hound her day and night, as african said to the point of killing her with stress. It is a good idea to keep a ratio of 3F:1M to give the girls a rest from time to time. If she is looking big and hanging out down in the plants, there is a good chance she is ready to drop very soon. Your easiest shot at saving some fry is to add lots of java moss or something similar for the fry to hide in, you should get some survivors unless its a full on community tank. If you are serious about saving most of the fry, you will need to either isolate her in a breeding trap or move her to a separate tank once she gets big. Keep an eye on her and when she drops remove the fry about 12 hrs after you see the first fry (it can take that long for her to pop them out) and keep them separate in a floating icecream container for a day or so until mum recovers then swap mum and fry over. if you miss a birth dont panic she will drop again in approx 4 weeks. One mating will last for up to 3 spawns so If you really want to you can keep her on her own untill you catch a birth or 2 the big thing is to avoid stressing her just before she drops, otherwise she will abort and you get nothing, don't take her out of the water if moving her, herd her into a container or the birthing trap and take her out of the tank water and all. Phew Good luck man, join the WAS and I'll be able to help you out in person :bounce:

  14. No, that cable is not heat resistant it will heat up go brittle and pop You really need some silicon cable or some fiberglass sleeving, I dont condone DIY wiring, but if you are really set on doing it yourself then at least get the right gear for the job. I would strongly suggest you get a sparky to help you out. I would help you out, but the mileage would be a killer
  15. IMO bio balls in a canister are a waste of time for biological filtration, they have a poor surface area compared with sintered glass (the porus noodles).
  16. Are the noodles just plain ceramic or are they porus? If they are the porus bio media type like siporax they should be just before the wool. This will stop them clogging up.
  17. Next meeting will be a swap meet/Auction. The club will be having a clean out of stuff as well, all sorts have to go. Swim bladder?

One of my Nicaraguan cichlids sits hard on the bottom, breathing heavyish and wobbles when swims. water was not as good as it has been, nitrates were a little high and PH nose dived to 6. Not sure why, maybe over feeding of late? Have started 40% water changes every 2nd day. Other Nic and other fish are fine. Any suggestions?
  21. It was 10 1/2 kilos caught off a reef out the back of Mayor island on a 4/0 hook baited with a 1/4 pilchard I would have released an old guy like that but he was stuffed after the idiot deck hand gaffed him in the side instead of lip gaffing him like I told him too It fed 13 adults and 8 children. BTW big granddaddy snapper aren't all tough and dry unless you are stupid enough to try and cook 4' thick fillet. He tasted great!
  22. If in doubt cry, and say they are all you have left to remember your recently deceased, Son, Daughter, Mother (pick one) and you take them everywhere. They will think you are crazy....no one wants to upset a crazy person
  23. I agree with Stella, the only issue you will have with setting up a pre biological filter drum is that the nitrates will still build up. you can get special resin filters to take that out, it starts getting expensive tho, I'd go with rain water collection from your roof, just check the PH as it can be slightly acidic, depending on where you live. Good luck
