  1. The problem with collecting water off your roof is that you can get spray drift from your neighbours. Another thing Id check would be the PH, PH shock kills fast

    BN caves

Its frustration when a supposedly easy fish doesn't do the deed. I have found that they require a tight cave, for the first time I saw my BN at it, the male has to trap the female in the cave, so a good tight entrance makes it easier. As for trying to feed the males when they are nesting I wouldn't bother, They will eat when they are ready, just make sure the male gets a break between batches and he will be fine.
  3. they tend to take out the little ones(snails), you may still have some big ones that they cant get into? It wont happen overnight but it will happen Mine do a great job
  4. Oh yeah thats right
  5. I give plasma, takes a bit longer..I have time for a wee sleep 8)...after my tee and bickkies of course. Apparently I get a "gift " next time I donate Whoo Hoooo
  6. Get a wide squat one, that's what I use. My Oscars a big boy now and he hasn't managed yet
  7. I have had similar issue's with my greedy guts. Get a terracotta flower pot, cut/ break a hole in the side just big enough for GBA to get in. Turn it upside down on bottom of the tank. Use a piece of hose to drop sinking pleco chips through the drainage hole in the "top" of the flowerpot. Gba can get in but not Oscar Sorted

  10. I had the same thing Whetu, I wormed him and everything, in the end he moved on to the great aquarium in the sky, sorry no good news
  11. Yes we are starting the setup next month for our first small tank 3'(I think) to take enunga and maybe some small kokapu. Once we get that running well we will be starting on a larger project...think a full on exhibit...if we can get the sponsors that is.
  12. 20th September meet 10am World of Water
  13. Agreed, give the gravel a good deep vac too, IME waste in the gravel can leech out nitrates, I couldnt keep Nitrates down (even with weekly water changes) when I bought a running 3' setup once, deep gravel vac weekly for a few weeks sorted that out.
  14. Yeah, I was talking to some fish keepers when I was over last, and they were amazed that we give away BN because they are so common
  15. Sunday, 3.00pm Hamilton Zoo. We are having our half yearly tank crawl later on in September, so this weeks event will be going over judging criteria and what you will need to do to score well. See you there

    TWIGS

Have you looked on planet catfish? they have some pretty good breeding guides.
  17. Id go polypanel (like an industrial coolstore) for a fish room. great insulation easy to clean, if its ok for dairy companies and meat works its fine for fish.
  18. I got some Riccia for my Gouramies to hide and breed in...they ate it
  19. Give it a wash, chuck it in a bucket with some fresh water and test the ph. Leave it a few days with an air stone for circulation then test again, that will give you a pretty good idea, wouldnt think there'd be much sand exposed atm Hoody after all the rain...& dont fall in
  20. I use pool filter sand, its a silica sand and as such PH neutral.
  21. They should retail between $15-22 each
  22. I want one toooo! great fish...am saving my pennies for some fancies, one of these is on my list.
  23. Agreed, I have one and I chuck a bit of a stocking over the whole media compartment
