  1. Bloodworms, 27.8 degree water and a good cold water change worked for me. Siphoned off the fry I could see and transferred to a grow out tank once free swimming. Try that Mincie they are probably much the same. Let me know if that works.
  2. I had a chat with Mannie (Malawi man from T.A.) yesterday and hes has enlightened me. It would appear that the greener the tank the better, he even supplied me with some nice alage covered moss to give my grow out tank a kick start, a light on for a few days 24/7 should give the little buggers enough to eat ....fingers crossed. I'll let you know how I get on. :-?
  3. Met at Zooz No pooz on shoez Lots of happy viewz Judges yet to pass on the Newz Numbers were low Some didnt show or were way to slow we had lots of fun Driving in the sun Stopped at Jenny's for a coffee & Bun (cake didnt rhyme  ) By 5.00 o'clock we were done Malawai man (Mannie) donated some prize(s) Now looking forward to a surprise Our judges tell no lies despite attempts at bribes.
  4. We are kicking off at 12.00 noon at the Zoo. See you there
  5. What vitamin dosage do you use phoenix?
  6. Look into milk filter socks. ask a dairy farmer mate, they are used inline.
  7. IMO you cant beat Sera siporax for your bio media, apparently it has the greatest surface area per volume of all the brands. I use ceramic noodles for the bottom stage, bio fibres and/or coarse sponge in the second stage, siporax on top.
  8. At long last my pair of red whips have gotten jiggy :bounce: I have done some looking into raising the fry and it would appear they are tricky to keep alive, what's the secret boys and girls? I am getting conflicting advice from the web and would like to hear from someone who has actually raised them successfully a few times. Owen
  9. Juliei's and sterbais are mine
  10. My Java fern was absolutely rubbish in my planted tank (kept rotting etc) so I moved it to a lower light tank and its doing really well.
  11. Just a reminder for our tank crawl next weekend. get them whipped into shape folks.
  12. Many people do feed their big fish cat food, but I wouldn't advise it. Fish have different dietary needs than cats so they may or may not thrive on cat food. Will they survive? possibly. EG fish have trouble digesting mammalian fats but cats dont.

Great to see they have settled in together, the one you got from me still looks slightly stressed..or excited, his black markings are usually darker than that. My Daughters will love seeing the pics of him with his new friend.
  14. I use a mirror demister for one of mine, only about the equivalent of 100watts but it seems to work pretty well.
  15. Choco's should be ok. NO SYNO'S THEY WILL STRIP THE SLIME FROM THE KNIFES BEFORE YOU CAN BLINK just ask Living art
  16. I'm gonna pose this dilemma to my LFS, they are a specialist shop so it will be interesting to see their reaction.
  17. I rate Hikari sinking carnivore pellets pretty high for Bichirs Oh and try and teach to hand feed as early as possible, I wish I did with mine.
  18. This is entirely unconfirmed.
  19. I was under the impression (advice from the manager of HFF) that the red severums that are in NZ are just a colour variant of the gold Severum, its apparently a colour mutation which has been selectively bred for. This is entirely unconfirmed.
  20. I like your wee rant firenzenz 8) What I'd like to know from you, is are you willing to pay more for well bred fish, It is the public who dictate the market. Most people on this forum (myself included) are tight buttocked and we screw retailer down as low as we can. There are specialist places that I'd be very certain would identify fish and guarantee their lineage if people were willing to pay top dollar for that guarantee. Seriously who here would be willing to pay extra, unless you are planning to breed them. Im curious as a consumer and a breeder.
  21. My advice would be similar to the others, reduce your numbers. I had a similar hodge podge mix of fish in my community tank, for best visual results apply the following rule. Less variety greater numbers. Your tetras & rasboras will school with same or similar types, they will be your mid level fish, I'd suggest enhance your Neons school with Cardinals (they are dearer but live much longer). Choose either one of the other tetras such as Rummies or the rasboras and do the same, sell or swap the remainder of mid level fish for them if you can. Keep the gouramis for your high level surface fish, again decide which ones you like best and try and keep to one type. Next step is bottom dwellers or cleanup crew. 8 cories will be a sweet group, 3 loaches (be aware the pakastani's will get pretty big, I have gone for Zebras myself) for snail control, some small bristle nose (once they get too big they start damaging plants IMO) and your whips. Still a well stocked tank but wayyyy more manageable and much less chaotic and visually appealing.
  22. Not all aquarists are strapped for cash, ever watch Bruce Biggalo?
  23. I could do all that for you if you have an arm and leg to spend, 5-7 k would cover it 8)
  24. Interesting, they suggest it for salt of fresh water on the site, I'm not a salty tho. :-?
  25. Careful with the beef mince, fish have major trouble digesting Mammalian fat. Hence why trimmed beef heart is best if you want to go down that path
