  1. WOW. Maybe I should get a cat! It is my husband who would prefer a cat to a dog, but I liked principally the idea of a dog because I hadn't had one before. My husband always had dogs when he was growing up. I guess I need to do a lot more thinking about this. I agree with the comment about purebreds. I have had 4 beautiful siamese cats in my lifetime and they have all died before they turned ten from difference cancers. And cost thousands along the way. My BFF volunteers at the SPCA in Wellington and they are happy to pay him in cats (within reason!! LOL) so perhaps I will go get me a little freebee kitten to start with! What are miniature schnauzers like? I know of a couple of people with young children who have them.
  2. We would like to get a very small dog. We have a small house and small children and a smallish fully fenced backyard. But it particularly needs to be a small dog as I care for other people's children full-time in my home too and I don't want potential clients to be put off as they would be by a big dog. I am thinking chihuahua or dachshund. Does anyone have experience with small yapper-type dogs? Any advice?
  3. Ira posting something cutesy???!!! :nilly: Are they for sale? I am in the market for a kitty.
  4. I wondered if that might be the case. Will try that then
  5. My friend (@Jutney) who is new on here, has a 165L community tank which at the moment houses 1 molly, 3 platties, 3 baby angels, 10 neon tetras and 6 pristella tetras. He has just added a guppy and the guppy is being quite aggro, chasing everyone and nipping. Is this normal behaviour?
  6. You could also try these guys - http://arthurholmes.co.nz/ they have a big selection of glass jars and sell to the public, and there is no minimum buy.
  7. I remember someone saying that Wet Pets has a really great aquarium section, better than those in Wellington. I am heading that way next weekend. Is it worth a trip?
  8. I will submit a pic tomorrow (assuming I don't die in my sleep).
  9. My peacock cichlid bit me on the arm and drew blood!
  10. Hi again, I have finally sorted out (thanks entirely to @Suphew) my 4ft light but the lighting is still really bland. I have a couple of new tubes. As I said earlier, I have two double lights like these: http://www.aquaone.co.uk/lighting_al_t8.php on my 4ft tank. One is 3ft, one is 4ft. The 3ft one has two tubes which say power-glo 30W and the 4 ft has one which says Aqua-glo 40W and one which says Sun-Glo 40W. Does that make any sense? My tank is 65cm deep though so I am guessing I need some strong lighting to get good light. It is an african tank (mainly) with no plants, and mainly shell rock (is that what it is called?) like these ones - but a different tank. (this is a photo of my old tank though, I have a background, etc etc now, and more rock, but it gives you the picture). I am in the process of changing to black substrate (I was planning to buy some of that lovely jet-black silica from the LFS but if anyone can tell me a better place to buy it please do!). I have hauled all my substrate out today. Anyway, so I would be really keen for any further opinions about lighting for a deepish tank, and also about substrate in an african tank.
  11. Would you mind posting a link to this?
  12. Wellington Zoo has a good few reptiles too. The Ibis is right in the centre of town. Te Papa is worth a look and is only a 10 minute walk away. Which day are you here? I work from home and would be happy to drive you to somewhere if it is a pain to get there on public transport.
  13. The Pet Centre in Lower Hutt is great and I think the public transport to get out there is pretty easy on the train. Just get off at Melling. PLease someone tell me if I have that wrong! As for food, depends on what you want, there are some fantastic cafes and restaurants in Wellington, just depends on your budget and what sort of place you're after. If you head up Cuba Street you'll be spoilt for choice - look out for Midnight Espresso, Floraditas, Fidels, Ernesto, the list goes on. What are you into, other than fish of course?
  14. THanks so much Suphew for sorting me out with my light!! All working well now! Thanks SO much!! :bounce:
  15. You could always put it on TM for $1 reserve and let the market decide and then if you don't like the market's decision, withdraw the auction before it finishes. I know it's annoying and cheeky but it's an option.
  16. Not sure what jersey shore is but it's Flight of the Conchords. First thing that came to mind!
  17. I have an AquaOne T8 4ft double light and one light isn't working. Before you ask, yes I've changed the bulb to make sure it's not that. I was hoping someone might know how to fix it or could take a look or at least recommend somewhere I could take it. I'll happily payfor your time. I'm in Wellington. :-)
  18. Looks really great! And yeah what a fantastic piece of driftwood!
