  1. That sure was ruff Kellz John you r so right the death of OUR fish hits hard. I have two clowns in one tank (with angel, neon tetras & various bottom feeders) and four in another (with discus & bristlenoses) All are doing well and just rest on the hard wood to sleep. I previously lost two through medicating the tank and not realising that the clown loaches have no scales poor things. A hard lesson for me. R u going to get any more clowns Kellz??

    Hello

yay good news Thanks for letting us know cat. My hubby saved my discus when he noticed them on the bottom of the tank curling up. The heater had malfunctioned and was not working. He just took out the tank water (not a fish hobbyist at all) and replaced it with tapwater which he had heated to 26 degrees and he did that all day until I returned home from work. WELL the discus did well and never suffered any ill affects. So miracles do happen. Needless to say the heater was replaced without cost to me (it was new). I always have backups now of everything. Re the filter my fluval 304 has strong out let and I have it facing the tank wall so it hits the glass before going into the tank. works for the discus swim around the whole tank. Again great news.
  3. 8) Hi there Phillip. You have me scurrying to the books to find out just what sort of species those are. Welcome - enjoy enjoy. now where was that reference LOL

 so nice to be among ppl that know they are human. 8) U all r the reason this site is so fantastic. 10/10 in my book
  10. ty robert for sharing that. I will watch carefully and see what difference the more frequent changine and wiping will make. I have found that clean conditions, water goes a long way for healthy discus and to date (touch wood) I have not found them difficult to keep at all. Like you I find the discus a most rewarding fish to keep.

    Aloha!!! NZ

welcome Cramramdon I did not reecognise you with that bag over your head. as you can see I have lost the fur LOL. Welcome aboard the NZ forum
  13. I did not know that thanx dog I will try the more frequent changes and see if the growth rate is different. Can you tell me more re the hormone and growth rate? Does one discus grow and the others have their growth rate inhibited?
  14. all thanks to an angel?? Caryl. A goth one rofl
  15. wow you are so busy. I originally bought two medium sized discus and put them into my 3.5 foot tank I changed the water once weekly and they thrived. I grew complacent :-? and the water changes went by the board and the nitrates rose. One discus stopped growing, to get rid of the nitrites I had to change the water often - several times during the week. Once the nitrates/ nitrites were nil and now aware of what my tardiness could do, I once again became a diligent fish keeper and went back to changing the water regularly. Once weekly. The discus are doing fine. I have since added three small babies and they are growing well. However because of the size of the tank I will need to find other homes for the smaller ones as they grow, or repile the house and set up a decent sized tank . Also in the tank are four clown loaches (also growing well) and four bristlenosed cat fish. From my limited experience I would say that the discus are affected by sudden change. If you are consistent and keep the water clean they will thrive. Mine feed from my fingers and definitely recognise me when I enter the room - even if not being fed. A most rewarding fish to keep.
  16. Congratulations. Nice one. good luck with the rearing
  17. Well I have always had u/g filters for my tanks (whole 4-5 years ). The discus are doing fine, I also run a fluval 304 (so guess I amover filtered LOL) However the discus are doing fine with u/g filter in their tank. I was thinking of removing it and existing only on the Fluval 304, however that was only because i am thinking of re landscaping and removing the u/g filter would give me a little more room. Plants growing well with u/g filter too.
  18. Caryl, sighhhhhhhh It really is hard to spot cops on the ferry you know ROFL. Oh Michton. that was RUFF. Hope they come to light.
  19. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh  home safely, only seeing three marked police, two mufti and one speed camera. I can only agree with all Caryl said (she is right again ) A wonderful weekend with so much learned, the Hawkes Bay club did a GREAT job and the hospitality was grand. Thanks guys n gals. Well worth coming all that way for. The aquarium is just something else and when our Texan club-member returns, a visit there will be a must. So I will release the bristlenoses' that I bought at the auction now they have floated etc etc and I will put my feet up and have a cuppa.

    Fluval 3 Plus

john I agree, my experience with the Fluval 304 is similar. I prime it after cleaning. Fill the cannister up, fill both the hoses and then set it back up with hoses in tank etc. Leave for a couple of minutes and set going. Then a couple of pumps and it whispers away - good as gold. However I can appreciate that there can be a faulty one of even the best brand. Kellz maybe it is a simple thing in the settingup. Or sheer bad luck in getting three faulty ones.
  23. We could move show to your lounge Would dearly love to view the tank. Could we have a tiki tour through your lounge to view??
  24. Have you thought of asking ppl at a glass shop. Our local glaziers are so helpful with such info.
  25. Carylnz if you look closely you will see the reflection of the photographer in the tank. It is a big tank. As big as my house. I am looking forward to seeing the photos of it fitted and going. Niiiiiiiiiiice
