  1. great post Shilo. Now hubby is going to attend to our roof. How hard would it be for him to do that little adjustment LOL.
  2. Did you get tempted and buy anything????? See any bargains?????

    Moving...

Have you thought of using a chilly bin to transport the fish and water in?? Keeps them warmer - longer.
  4. Do keep us updated and pass on my sympathies to Ken and D. Resealing the tank is a good idea if they can. It is sitting level isn't it? <--silly question I know, just a thought.
  5. Good for you How is it all working out. What a lot of work and effort - the satisfaction is great though HUH??? Good one.
  6. Cees I love the chat room. Thanks. Love the colour of the board (most important  ) so good to be able to type to someone else instantly.
  7. I found them excellent. Also the head and tail light tetras. My neons school well. I have at least 20 plus If they get under 10 they hide.
  8. I will add my tupence worth here and totally agree that the danger of contamination is too great. For me I would get some cheap containers from a place such as Pay Less Plastics or the Warehouse. They have huge rubbish bins for a few dollars. Much easier and cheaper than replacing your fish and spending all that time n effort of trying to clean out the "free" containers. Good luck with the move., Please post how you did it and how you got on.
  9. Thanks Midas I will be going up to Christchurch soon and will have a day to look about and find one. Sure makes water change easy. Buckets get so heavy.
  10. Hiya john1. LOL it is me who has the u/g filters and external filters LOL. I tend to err on side of caution. I too believe that the u/g filter should cover as much area as it can. I too have cut up the plates to ensure the maximum coverage that I could.
  11. I agree Caryl gives good advice. The u/g filters are good Aqua and as said previously they do not need a lot of maintanance (nil). suits me fine When I requested one for the hexagon tank the sales person tried to sell me a small one telling me it was the only hexagon one made. WRONG I went to another pet store and WAHOOO there was the one I wanted, larger, almost twice as big and it fits great.
  12. glad to be educated john1. Have you heard that the North Island of New Zealand has problems accepting that the South Island is the MAINLAND. How are the fish doing?? <-----thought I better keep it topical or is that tropical LOL
  13. Gorse is used as fences in England. Curse here. Foxgloves are garden delight in England - noxious weed here. Possums are declared outlaws here (they carry TB virus to livestock). Aussie New Zealand thing is just sibling rivalery isn't it
  14. For the less technical person could you tell me the brand of these pumps? Sounds great to me. A piece on my syphon python broke and I have been told they do not sell replacement pieces (I now refuse to pay for complete python again). I have the tubing and suction end however the part that fitted onto the taps etc is broken.
  15. Living in Auckland your fish will probably be quite happy in 'cold' water. The temperatures, even in winter, are mild. whereas if I kept them the water would probably freeze in winter
  16. yeppers Aqua an u/g filter should do the trick. How is it all going?? A library will give you all the books you want without cost too. Reading up on the fish you wish to keep is a great way of knowing what you really need in a set up.
  17. Well I decided to keep the u/g filter in the discus tank and even set up one in the 55 Litre hexagon angel tank (which I set up over Christmas using seeded water and seeded Shark II canister filter)The angel fish are loving the depth of this tank. I would not get a taller one though. u/g filters have the plates which sit on bottom of the tank, gravel sits on top of these. I have never taken them out to clean. I normally do a light vacuum of the gravel when I water change. The uplift tubes have a tube within them with an air stone on the end which sits near the plates. At the top of the up lift tubes are cartridges of either zeolite(white) or carbon(black) The air stone can be taken out and rinsed at each water change, as can the cartridges. (u can do without the cartridges especially if you have another filter running). Aqua my understanding is that the u/g filter works in that the bacteria live on/in among the stones etc and are kept alive by the water flow that is created by the u/g filter. So sit back n relax and enjoy the fishes.
  18. Thanks for the info you provided john1
  19. ok my experience is that bees sting as rule. Bumblebees (big black n gold stripes on them bite. bees die after stinging. Bumbles live to avoid you another day.
  20.       @ Midas & Pegasus
  21. YEPPERS I use the PH all the time and the nitrate&nitrite occassionally. Invaluable even with regular water changes. Here the tap water can go from 7.0 to 7.2 What I have to watch here is the chlorine levels and so I have a test kit for that too. However if I remember to draw off the water far enuff in advance it is no problem. Sometimes there is none and other times the council has gone mad and dumped a bag in the water supply it seems. Long live green clean NZ> joke
  22. Thanks benny. macka, Having had the priveledge of personally viewing your tanks, the photos do not do your fish justice. However they are good photos. Your fish are awesome. Large, healthy and happy.
  23. Maybe your wife would like to help you choose??? U take the chance tho that she will fall in love with the .............discus
  24. Goldie

  ROFL I would serve them with notice that they will be returned to the cramped quarters unless appreciation is shown IMMEDIATELY. What a good start to the new year. Any pics??
