  1. one of the siamese bettas at work was badly damaged in community tank, his fins and tail almost completely gnawed away. He is eating still and looks lively enuff. I have spirited him away (with boss' permission) to my hospital tank. Temp set at 26 and stress zyme/coat put in water. Any suggestions what else I can do. He is swimming and exploring the caves etc. Do I need to add the masterpet antiseptic?? how long will it take for him to grow back his flowing fins/tail.
  2. other headlines could be "100 IMMIGRANTS STOWED IN LOCAL MANS' GARAGE' 'HOUSING PROBLEM IN NAPIER' The mind boggles ty Bruce for setting the Mainlanders' minds at rest.

  4. Just browsing the forum I am so glad you all shared this info for I was beginning to fed my fish bloodworms often. Still with flake and spirulina disks. Whoooooooooa slowing down on the bloodworms from now on. ty guys n gals. You probably saved my fish from complications of a beginner owners entusiasm.
  5. er hem excuse my ignorance (which I would like to rectify) what is fishless cycling? Is it beginning a tank without fish and building up the good bacteria??
  6. hi there, you mentioned you had a soft spot for guppies and if so then I suggest begin with them. Get more females than males and soon you will be aware of fry in the tanks for they breed like rabbits. They are fairly inexpensive too and so any mistakes will not be costly. I agree that whatever you begin with ensure that you have a soft spot for them. Makes the learning much more fun.

    hmm

I guess this is a follow on from 'Green Water'. Kellz I found that one of my tanks was beginning to show signs of algae and was positively puzzled for it was definitely away from the window. However one day while home I noticed that the late afternoon sun (low because of the season) was striking the tank in that one corner. So a drawn curtain has now solved that problem for me. How are you going with your tanks now???

    black algae

Derek is soooo right. I had the black algae problem a few months ago and had even tried stripped the tank down and re starting. Thanks to advice from this forum I finally got a siamese flying fox (from Pet world in Ferry road) siamese algae eater. He is doing a marvellous job. His mate committed sucide upon seeing the problem, bying flying out of the tank in the middle of the night through a small gap in the lid. Be careful though for the siamese algae eater is very similar in looks to a chinese one. Thanks to him and constant tank maintenance my tank is now looking pretty good and the plants are growing well again.

    Rio filter

I am positively distressed at times by some of the sales people who pass themselves off as fish experts. Recently I met with a senior citizen and his wife who were so distressed at their goldfish constantly dying within days of being purchased. They had been sold a small bowl and fish - had not been told of water changing, overfeeding, overstocking - let alone told of ph and nitrites etc. A young teenager sold a small tank, 250 w heater, no gravel (it can be ordered later) some strange brand filter, and told she could have her fish (6 various sorts) in five days when they arrived in store. I am a beginner and KNOW I am. This particular sales person KNOWS ALL ABOUT FISH. grrrrrrrr I am upset for I know how distressing it is to lose fish (by being sold a chinese loach with my angels) and I guess this makes me more upset to have these keen, people started off on the wrong foot and lead to believe it is THEIR FAULT. sorry folks just needed some ears to let this out of my system. the senior citzens I gave a 10 gallon tank to and talked them through the basics (letting them know I too was a beginner). The teenager I gave some gravel and seasoned water and again talked through the basics and now have fingers crossed. I suggested she delay the buying of her fish for a few weeks and bought a test kit, however I feel she will take the fish the shop person has ordered for her. so fingers crossed.

  14. hi and welcome. The clown loaches are fantastic. I have four in one tank and two in another. Love just coming in to watch their antics. They all hand feed now and are so gentle in taking the blood worms, just like feathers on the hand. Yes join a local club. I have found that 'fishy' friends are fantastic and they have saved me from many a crisis. Love your signiture sign.
  15. Hi there and welcome again. How exciting to be setting up Please what size tank and which fish are you starting with?? What sort of fish did you keep before.?? I began with guppies and a siamese fighting fish and was saved from the nitrite peak by an internet friend.

  18. Yeppers the ones at Eco world in Hokitika are over 6 foot I was lucky enough to be there at feeding time, 10am, when the diver went in to feed them. WOW. Well worth seeing. Also high marks to the rest of their fishy display, tropical and marine.
  19. Just a query Zeta. Do you have other fish in the tank and if so what are they?? When did they arrive in relation to the angel??
  20. nice one Ira. How are they going ?? did the lights out time work?? Good to hear about shops elsewhere.
  21. Nice link. Worked for me Caryl. Maybe no angels allowed LOL
  22. Just been reading about tank building in "The Living Aquarium" - Ward Lock - Fresh water and Marine. It has a very good section re tank building from scratch. By very good I mean step by step with all the pros and cons. In fact one for the corner of my fish room looks interesting - wonder how I can get hubby out of the way while I set it up LOL.

er hem. Ira maybe you could check with Caryl re the guppys not surviving. Her problem turned out to be the gravel she had been sold for the tank.
