I think get Cardinal Tetras, because as I said they are very hardy from what I've heard and they're hard to breed, so aren't bred that often so you can guaruntee the ones at the petshop are good quality. I think you should get the Golden Pencils instead of the Zebra Danios. Pencils look alright in smaller numbers but Zebras look their best in larger shoals of about 15. 5 isn't really enough, and it wouldn't be fair on the fish because they prefer more of their type. Gouramis hang around at the surface, and you want Hatchetfish which are also a surface dweller, so get them instead. And definately get Apistos. You won't regret it! They are one of the coolest little fish availible, and it is so much fun to watch their interesting little antics. What filter are you getting? For your tank I'd recommend an Eheim Classic 2213.

All the fish I listed are suitable for your tank. If they weren't then I wouldn't have mentioned them. Golden Pencils will be a much nicer substitute for the Zebra Danios, which have been inbred and modified for generations. I've seen photos of wild Zebra Danios, and they are a million times nicer than what you would see in the local petshop. The petshop Zebras are best left there. Although I would happily the buy Golden Pencils. Try and get fish that have a good shape for their species and nice markings, strong colours and that are healthy. Ask if the fish are able to be fed. The way a fish feeds can tell you a lot about its health. You could happily keep about 5-7 Khulis in that tank, but you will most likely have to cut down on catfish numbers so you don't overstock the tank. I would personally go for the Cardinals, because they are more colourful than the Rummynoses, and you can fit more in the tank than you could with the Emperor Tetras (Nematobrycon palmeri). Emperors are best kept in groups, and are suited to larger tanks, so you could only fit a trio in yours. They are large and grow to about 7 cm. Or are you talking about Blue Emperors (Inpaichthys kerri)? They are much smaller, so you can fit about 7-10 in your tank. But they lack the beautiful filaments on the fins and the lemon-yellow bellies of the Nematobrycon palmeri.

Hi Khuli Loach, If I were you, I would start with a small 'Amazon' type tank, with: A pair if Apisto. agassizii 'Double Red' or cacatuoides 10x Cardinal Tetras (these are hardier than Neons, live longer, and have more colour) About 5 Otos or cories, and maybe a small fancy Pleco, like Dekeyseria brachyura L168 5 Golden Pencilfish 3 Hatchetfish (I have to agree with you, they are awesome!) If I were you I wouldn't get livebearers because I've found that they get boring after a while, unless you plan to breed particular colour strains and that sort of stuff. Add some interesting pieces of bogwood, a few small species of Swordplant and some saggitaria, Twisted val, Crypts, and a bit of Hygrophila polysperma 'Rosanervig' for red, and a bit of Limnophila sessiliflora or Cabomba for a feathery texture. For lighting, get a Hagen T5HO 60cm hood, fitted with 2x PowerGlo tubes. Use sand for the substrate, 3 cm at the front, sloping to about 7 or 8 cm at the back. You could also add a 2-3 cm layer of JBL AquaBasis Plus underneath the sand for plant fertiliser, or you can use JBL Root Balls, which is just as effective and easier, but they need replacing once a year. You can also use boiled dried oak leaves on the substrate or add peat to the filter (or do both) to add tannin to the water which will lower the pH, which is what those fish like, plus they will colour up a lot more nicely for you. Wow those are cool! 1. Mayfly (I love mayflies. There are many species. I once saw a giant one, and a bright sulpher-yellow coloured one) 2. Striped Lax Beetle, Thelyphassa lineata 3. Looks like a Dusky Scuttler Moth, Opogona omoscopa, or it could be a species of Caddisfly 4. Caddisfly

I would love some Blyxa japonica! I alson wouldn't mind some L. hippuroides and aromatica 'Red'.

But it's a plant fertiliser, so its made out of clay, isn't it? Won't that cloud the water?

How adorable! Well done I currently have a baby Chinese Painted Quail. There were more - about 6, but they kept dying for some reasone. Last year when I bred my quail 7 chicks were raised to adulthood and sold. My Turquoisines currently have 7 eggs. Hopefully they'll all hatch.

Try and find some iron sand and go through it with a magnet to pick out all the black stuff. Wash it, and it will be suitable for your tank.

OK. So basically do they grow as big as normal Tiger Lotus? Also, what is the latin name and how many species/varieties of Red lotus are there in NZ that are suitible for aquariums? Does the Red Tiger Lotus belong to the genus Nymphaea like the regular Tiger Lotus?

Awesome! Does it need really bright lighting? I currently just have a couple of T8 tubes - an 18,000K AquaGlo and a 15,000K Aqua One Tropical tube. Would it be worth buying a couple of cheap Aqua One T5 tubes and some T5 fittings? I keep all my plants in terracotta pots, filled with sphagnum peat moss and sand on top. I also use JBL balls too. Would this be sufficient for Red Lotus? Also, how many different species/varieties of Red Tiger Lotus are availible, how big do they get, and what are their latin names?
