  1. I still think you shouldn't use any oraments. From experience I have found you will get much more pleasure out of your tank if you keep stuff natural
  2. Wow Goldfinches for $6 each :happy1: :happy2: :bounce: That is AMAZING! I got my one as a pair for $25, but the female got a stroke or something and died. I have a friend who has some Redpolls, and got them with the red on them, but ever since they molted while they were in the aviary they haven't retained their beautiful red colour. I wonder what sort of food they need to keep their colours? BTW I'm not a fan of colour-feeding. I think natural stuff is much better. I give my birds oranges and the Goldfinch's face is a lovely shade of deep red. You may have to wait for photos a week or so for them to settle in - they are extremely timid and I can't get near them. The aviary is about 4m long, and even when I enter the sheltered area and they're in the flight they still panick, and I'm meters away from them  How many temperate Finches are availible in NZ? I know of Redpolls, Yellow Buntings, Cirl Buntings, Chaffinches, Goldfinches, Greenfinches and Sparrows. There are also Red Hooded siskens I think, but they do require slightly warmer quaters from what I've been told. They are very hard to get. You should get an avairy :bounce: Temperate Finches are very low maintenance. As long as they are provided with clean water and good-quality seed and minerals, they are easy to look after and make almost no mess.
  3. I'll check the packaging and find out what the calcium levels are There is really no point in starting a thread about my finches because I only have three  One male Goldfinch, and a pair of Chaffinches that were delivered yesterday. I'm going to get more Goldfinches - I'd like at least three pairs, and a couple of pairs of Greenfinches, and possibly some Redpolls. I have five canaries, which I'm going to sell once I start getting more European Finches. Other birds are a pair of Chinese Painted Quail, 12 Turtle Doves (I only have one pair in the aviary, the rest are in a seperate aviary) my Turks, a pair of Bourke's Grass Parakeets (Neophema bourkii) five Canaries (three Border Fancies, one Buff Variegated Red Factor, one Frosted Red Factor). My dad and I have approx. 60-70 pigeons, and we also have three bantams.
  4. Do you want them in there just for ornamental purposes, or do you want to kill snails? I don't know how safe they will be. I think you should just buy some stuff to kill the snails that is aquarium-safe instead of risking your fishes' lives. Also if you just want them as ornaments, why do you want them in the tank? Can't you just store them in an envelope and look at them whenever you want to? Or put them on your shelf? Personally I think it is best to keep an aquarium as natural as possible, because it looks FAR better and the inhabitants will be happier
  5. Dwarf Gouramis are NOT a cichlid, they are an anabantid.
  6. Wow that tank is awesome I think you should just stick to the lighting you are using - you are obviously having a lot of success with it. I think you'd need something brighter if you are going to keep hard corals, but personally I think soft corals look MUCH nicer
  7. Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H3. All photos were taken on the ISO setting using Macro. Not really  That pic was taken nearly a couple of years ago. The strawberries are now fenced off so the bantams can't get at them, and they also do not have bark around them now either.
  8. Floofie Update :happy2: YAY! :happy1: They're 16 days old. They are getting their first feathers. I took some close-ups of the wings and tail so you can all see the lovely blue and green feathers coming through. The hen hasn't sat on them for three or four days now, but still goes into the nest box to feed the floofies. I'm thinking about handling them now each day to get them tame. Is this a good idea?
  9. Wow Jennifer what AMAZING fish I REALLY want a pair :bounce: :happy2:  :happy1: !drool:

What Fluvals do you recommend? I've heard lots of stories about Fluval M series breaking very easily...
  11. Hi Simon, AWESOME photos They're very good quality Sorry to hijack your thread, but I really want to show you these pics that I took. Please tell me what you think of them
  12. Cool I can't wait for them to be bred 8) :bounce:
  13. Are they those A. eunotus that firefish was selling?
  14. Eheim Classic 2213s are great! When you go to clean them, you just close off the double taps, then detatch them, and take the filter somehwere where you can clean it without worrying about water going everywhere. I just take it onto the deck or put it in a bucket. Remember, when you lift the head off the filter, open the taps or the head won't come off due to the suction created with both taps closed off.
  15. Oh yes I forgot about Kribs Get the Pelvicachromis taeniatus instead of the P. pulcher. They are much, much, MUCH nicer looking fish
  16. I think you should go for Apistos, which will suit that tank nicely. African setups are much nicer when they're bigger - 120x60x60 would be great, but since your tank is small, you have to make do with it. I think you should get: A pair of Apistogramma agassizii 'Double Red' A pair of Rams A trio of Apistogramma hongsloi 15 Cardinal Tetras 2 or 3 small fancy Plecos Lots of plants!
  17. WOW This tank is AWESOME :happy1: BTW you need to add some Bolbitis heudelotii and Cyperus helferi I love the Echinodorus Red Rose x Ozelot. Mine is doing very well.
  18. I have three cats, and all of them don't bother the pet birds (although they may catch the odd sparrow or goldfinch from time to time) and they never even look at the fish They're very well-trained pussies
  19. Ichthyophthirius multifilis
  20. Wow this is even better than Luis Moniz's 90x45x45cm tank! I stumbled across this yesterday: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/tank- ... -p-24.html The thing I love about it is the texture - everything looks smooth, lush and dense. It also combines my love for Ferns, Anubias and Moss with stem plants. I love the colour of the Rotala rotundifolia - it's sort of like a peachy-golden colour, not deep red. The Rotala macrandra is also stunning! The only thing about this tank that I don't like is that silly 'bamboo' type plant in the right hand corner - it looks messy and scraggly, and it does not fit well with the other plants.
  21. I took these photos yesterday afternoon. Floofies Hen Without flash With flash
