  1. why would you pay money for an eel? seriously just catch one from a creek/river/pond etc etc, we used to catch tons of them. Would make an awesome pet though, not that im a huge fan of eels but would still be neat
  2. I had 2 m and 2 f neon dwarf gouramis and a male figher along with various other community fish. man the male was a real menace, was constantly flared up and chasing after the gouramis. I ended up removing him
  3. there was a little writeup about keeping trout as pets near the native fish section. the tank with the huge inanga. i cannot remember exactly what it said but it was saying about how good trout are as pets. maybe someone else can remember reading it?
  4. im sure if keeping trout as pets was mentioned at the fish show then im assumeing it is legal to keep as pets. can anyone confirm weather it is legal to keep them as pets?
  5. I saw at the fish show in hamilton that trout make good tank mates (if you have the right size tank) Rainbows are a little agressive but im sure a couple browns in a decent size tank would be awesome
  6. how about some killies? there are many beautiful species to choose from and are really easy to breed

  8. What sort of killie do you have? some breed in mops, others spawn in containers of peat With the mop spawners you pick the eggs from the mop and store in water or peat, in water they hatch after around 12 days (does vary on specie) and if you store on peat you can hatch them when you are ready for them. With peat spawners, (from what i have been told, i havnt had any peat spawners before)generally you place a container of peat in the tank, such as margerine container with hole cut in the lid, after a couple days you remove the peat and store in an air tight bag at around 22-24 degrees, after around 3 months you "flood" the peat in a chinese food container and the eggs hatch within a few hours. thats basically how it works

Ill see if i can borrow flatmates one when she gets home. I have some nice p82s I wish i had a brine shrimpp setup, that is what is next on the list. Then i will be hatching the korthouse yellows and palmiqsti (cant spell) and eggersi eggs i have Is there any special lense or anything required to take photo of fish?
  10. think of what happens if you cross a platty with a swordtail, from what i have heard the resulting fry are almost all infertile. But yes the idea on keeping the strain pure is one of the biggest reasons to not interbreed species.

    Nigripinnis

is 18-20 degrees best (generally) for all species? What is considered as too wet? Ideally what temperature should water be when "flooding"? Ive had 2 bags of eggersi and had no luck with both of them, this has been very interesting and useful

    whiteworms

I do not have anything to put them in....yet I did read somewhere that some people just use an icecream container, would that be sufficent?

does anyone have a culture that i could start my own culture with? Im from whakatane so i could pick up if close, or could pay for cost of postage. cheers
  16. should just make a note that barrie pointed out to me a while ago, im breeding P82's, not gardneri blues, was my mistake on that one. Have also now got scheeli breeding (thanks barrie) also the dageti are getting along nicely too.
  17. from what i have been told, as well as experienced killies generally like low lighting, during the day in bright lights my killies used to hide and generally do nothing, all my killie tanks are in a cupboard that i designed myself and is fairly dark, the fish love it, are always active...well basically always doing "it". temperature is quite low really, around 22 degrees is generally the best, although everyone has their own opinions, mine fluctuates 21-24 depending on the day. My killies live on flake food, sometimes they get a bit of microworm, although im not sure how much of it they eat, as with any fish live food is best. breeding them is very easy, im having more luck with the killies than even my guppies, just requires a little bit of effort
  18. good luck with breeding from them, i tried and the males just beat up the females, nipping their fins and eyes etc, very agressive little fellas. They almost ended up as bird food, but i gave them their own tank
  19. if you join the nzka you will get as much killiefish info as you can handle. If you want to breed killies of course you must keep the species seperate as certain soecies can interbreed, causeing infertile and deformed etc fry. I have kept several species of killie in the same tank however i have not collected any eggs, and made sure the females of the species were easily identifyable as almost all killie females are very boring in color and many different species of female look alike. I have almost all my killies in 300x200x200 tanks, blacken the back of tank and have a bit of floating plant, i use sand on bottom of tank with only an airstone and no filter. Be careful killies are very addictive, i started off with 2 tanks...i now have 15, almost all dedicated to killies.
  20. they are called Fundulopanchax sjostedti, i think someone please correct me if i am wrong, i would love a pair myself. They are my second favourite killie at the moment, will be my favourite when i own a pair. Someone please sell me some
  21. After buying a few more fish after the fish show i had to do a shuffle of fish and move a few things around, i put my neon dwarf gouramis in with one of my fighters, and since they settled in the tank the fighter is continuosly harrasing the dwarf gouramis, sure he looks awesome but i dont imagine it being too pleasant for the gouramis. He isnt biting or anything, just flareing up and staying really close to the gourami(s) Can anyone explain why this happens? Would i be best to rehome the fighter in with some bolivian and blue rams? cheers
  22. looks like the wild guppys that can be caught, have almost no tail fin and lots of different colours. i have seen many of these
  23. my killie cupboard runs off 2 lightbulbs, they are constantly going on for a couple hours & off for a couple hours and it doesnt bother the fish one bit. I also have some guppies & platys & jewel cichlids in their own tanks in there aswell. Doesnt seem to bother them one bit.
