  1. I like the killies as i was hooked from the second i walked into tims fishroom in tauranga. There is such a wide range of colours and also the fact that they are so rare makes it that much more enjoyable to keep. But its mainly all the different colours that do it for me. Also on a different note i have a common pleco which i love to bits, as he was the first tropical fish i ever got. ....And also i like a fish that stands out at a fish shop or someones fish room. generally if a fish stands out to me i will buy it and ask questions later
  2. wow those rams are neat, i might have to get hold of some. What are their requirements?

    Hi!

I had one tank for about 2 years, then really got hooked on fish about 4 months ago, i now have 15 tanks. MTS really bit me in the bum Good luck and welcome to the site
  4. o yea legend, any gues as to how long until they will be big enough?
  5. wow thats amazing. If any fry survive could i grab a couple off you once they are big enough?
  6. last time i went to lake okataina trout fishing there was tons of it. there was also heaps in the bush
  7. I will hopefully be going to one of the lakes around here this wekeend or the next. Will see if i can bring home enough to cover the bottom of one of my smaller tanks
  8. Anyone used the volcanic rock obsidion in their tanks? I think it would look neat having the whole bottom of the tank covered in obsidion, along with a black back of tank it would really bring out the colours in the tank. Would it affect the ph of water etc?

    gay guppies

maybe they go by the saying - ""You aint a man till youve had a man" I can remember that was one of the funniest things i heard back in the days of high school
  10. yea i havnt done any work on the cupboard for over a month now, have been busy playing with the car and getting a bigger turbo etc... also with tech assignments etc Now i have the tanks i decided i had to get everything all finished by the weekend. They will be ready for water on thursday. Am applying last coats of polyurethane to cupboard over the next few nights. As for pics im undecided weather i should do another article for the nzka first, showing the club my final product and then everyone else on the forum, im leaning towards article first as my last one, everyone had basically seen what i had done before they got the newsletter

    Gardneri Blues

I too would agree that the gardneri are very hungry critters, always coming charging at my finger when feeding microworm, and some jump out of water when going after flake. However have not seen any fry in with their parents
  13. I was just wondering who out there is breeding what. Could be useful for people looking for fish/eggs etc The killies i have breeding at the moment are: Albino Gardneri Australe Golds Gardneri Blues (P82's) Striatum I also have some nothobranchius eggersi which i have just flooded today, another bag ready for flooding in a month. If all goes well i will have them aswell. Id love to get hold of a pair/trio of SJO's/King Killies at some stage

    questions

I have some guppies in with some killies while im waiting for more tanks. seem to be doing fine. Only thing is there have been absolutly no surviving guppy fry
  15. when i do water changes i sometimes do over 50% changes with water from the tap, i just try get it as close to tank temperature as possible. Havnt had any fatalities from it yet
  16. If there was one person to get people addicted to killies, Tim would be the one. And he is definatly not out for a quick buck, i had a problem with some killies i bought off him which died, it was my own fault but they were replaced free of charge with a few more thrown in aswell, not very often that happens these days. I started off with one tank. With the intention to buy one or 2 species i walked away from tims with about 5 the first time. Then i had to buy more tanks and equipment. Then next time i went i got more species, I have 5 tanks now with 10 more on order. Be careful killies can be addictive, however that is not nessecarily a bad thing. I would say it is a great thing to be hooked on.
  17. the banner links to this topic/post. Should i just email one of the people listed?
  18. o yea id be interested. Will be sweet to meet a few more people into fish keeping, there dont seem to be very much around whakatane. Tauranga is only an hours drive away
  19. do ya have to be in the western bay? lol Are there many people our age?
  20. there is one thing to be wary of...... not neccecarily a bad thing though If you visit his fish room, dont spend too long looking. You will fall in love with the killies and not be able to stop thinking about them and already have big plans for building your own fish room or at least getting a few more tanks. There is always just one more specie of killie that you "must" have.
  21. Killies are very easy to care for and breed. Only need basic requirements like food and clean water and can be kept at low temperatures(around 22 degrees) And yes the trademe kilifish guy is very reputable, would recomend him to anyone and is very knowledgable on all aspects of killies. Has the best stock of killies i have seen, and excellent prices.
  22. Can anyone give me some general information on these fish, i have been watching my gardneri blues grow and are getting quite large, and they all soom to attack my finger when feeding micro worms. and its neat how they act, but id like some of the sjo's I am very interested in getting some of the king killies but no nothing about them, i will be having a spare 600x300x300 tank in a few weeks so would like to put a pair/trio in there. Maybe my big(ish) pleco aswell Im guessing they would have the same food/water requirements as other killies can anyone confirm/deny this? Anything else i should know about them before getting some? And does anyone have a few they would like to sell to a fellow NZKA member? Cheers
  23. Ive had two male neon dwarfs in the same tank with neons guppies etc, were all happy as larry and the gouramis only ever chased after each other (looked like harmless boy fun to me), however i did put some small killies in the tank and both the boys were nibbling at the bag when i was adjusting the water, decided against putting killies in that tank. I also bought a couple females but they dont look that flash, however it is a neat suprise to find bubble nests on the top of the tank in amongst all the plants. The neon dwarfs are full of life and very interesting to watch

    winter foods

I grow microworm in the hotwater cupboard, i have a few containers of it and works reasonably effectivly. Have never tried growing white worm or similar, i will try get my hands on some at some stage. Other than that they just get flake, they all seem happy and my male p82s are getting rather large the hotwater cupboard stays at around 23 degrees (not very warm) but conveniently keeps my trays of eggs and fry at sufficent temperature at the same time
  25. do you know of any breeders close by? I know of 2 and they are both members of the NZKA if you pm me i can give you their contact details. Both have some really awesome fish. Maybe one day il be able to say i have a range of fish for sale, however have only got a whole bunch of killiefish eggs and the mollies are breeding at the moment, which by the way i could give you a few if you like, they are wild caught and dont have much colour, however are very interesting and full of character. Could be used to get the tank cycled ready for other fish or something
