  1. If light and flow are good, then that's really all that is left - you can accidentally introduce a lot of nutrients with cheap food. Some brands, like JBL have phosphates and other problem causing things removed, and are well worth the extra cost, IMO. perhaps try feeding less, and or buying phosphate-free food. ps. pluck off the affected leaves etc now to minimise its ability to spread.
  2. It sounds like you are already doing enough, but generally if you have good flow, not too many nutrients, and good light it doesn't grow - when was the last time you renewed your tubes?
  3. I'm after some more snails for the RSM - PM me if you've got any you don't want / need and want to trade / sell / whatever
  4. Looks very nice - nice work
  5. I hear that the rules page is being re-written in a more straightforward and concise way - I think that will be good for everyone concerned.
  6. As far as the filter goes, these bear a striking resemblance to Eheim units, so I suspect they wil be just as reliable. That's a great price too.
  7. Do more frequent water changes and increase the circulation in your tank
  8. On the RSM test it should be green - although the test is pretty vague. With my RSM the alkalinity always seems average to low on the RSM test kit (its yellowy green rather than bluey green), but I suspect it is actually fine. A decent test kit would probably be worth the investement in both our cases.
  9. And there is a public Aviary in the centre of their Gardens too - worth checking out.
  10. If you are good with wood, have you considered making a wooden 'tray' to sit on top of the metal? You could make one to your satisfaction (ie flat), then glue it with 'No More Nails or similar to the top of the metal stand, using the No More Nails and/or packers to take up any unevenness and transfer the load to the stand. I'd recommend still using a layer of Polystyrene too, which you could probably hide in the tray with a bit of trim to keep it neat.
  11. When all is said and done you have to want to breed fish for reasons other than financial gain to get something out of it - maybe because you have friends who want some, or maybe because you just want to see if you can do it - there is very little money to be made. The only exception I've found are things like the Guppies, or in my case Whiptails, which take relatively little money and effort to breed, raise themselves, and can be sold off from time-to-time to subsidise the cost of having the tank in the first place. The real cost of rearing most fish locally far exceeds their value in the local marketplace, which is why it will probably never be much more than a cottage industry at best. Ironically making imports harder might actually improve the situation, but only if people are willing to financially recognise the effort that goes into breeding fish by paying the local breeders / retailer who buy from local breeders a reasonable price.
  12. Vorb is the public Nana's best behaviour site! The real forums are invite only and rather riske, to say the least.
  13. They try to suppress their feelings of inadequacy from failing med school and having to become vets instead by being a complete pain in the behind and applying legislation in a hamfisted manner. At least, that's my take on it.
  14. I bought it as a 'Royal Whiptail' / Sturisoma aureum, but judging by the extensions off its pectoral fins it is possibly actually Sturisoma festivum.
  15. Here's a photo of the latest lot. I've removed the Discus from the tank, so there'll be more chance of this lot growing out.
  16. You do know what he is actually doing, right? Doing that is a little bit like getting a girl drunk...
  17. I don't know - still quite small I suspect.
  18. 62cents is the maximum that can be claimed before triggering Fringe Benefit Tax.
  19. Mine are in a tank of their own at the moment, so they are relatively safe, I guess - anyone want to buy my Sea Hare-O-Rama? Its been upgraded with an Eheim 1000 pump and Jaeger heater!
  20. About 5 days at 27 degrees.
  21. The first lot have - they are cruising around at Johns. I guess this lot will too, but yes, the intention is to get rid of them all - they are a lot bigger than I had assumed, and although they are great at getting rid of algae, I need that to grow pods and other random critters in for the Mandarins.
