well you should know! This has just taken me by surprise as happened over a couple of days, he is the dominant male of two in the tank and was always after the female before I "lost" her. How would you describe the smell?

yep, all the turtles out basking in the pond last weekend for the first time in a few months, lizards starting to emerge from slumber as well. roll on spring!!

only if I can smell yours shell fine, no skin problem, just dark eyes and the smell hard to explain, but smells "off"

ok, thought i would update, I have got the water back to normal amonia levels and also been dosing with salt, the reeves seems nore lively but eyes still dark, I had a look tonight and he smells again, the original smell disapeared after the first couple of days, is it time to take to the vet or is there something else I can try?

from what I understand there is only one cooter left in NZ thus the crossbred, thought it was odd he is selling them so early. Also would have thought if any hope of getting near to being something like cooters again they would have to be breed back to the cooter. they will probably end up looking like weird coloured red ears.

thanks guys, it amazes me what women go through giving birth, makes me happy to be a man. And naverre, I too hope she takes after her mum, a short,fat, bald girl wouldn't look to flash! I had a look at the locusts tonight, some of the breeders have survived so hopefully they will last a bit longer to boost the sad amounts I am left with!! I'll have to ask Alien4 to put up another fundraiser auction so I can get some more!!

lol, i'll ask if she wants to use the planted tank! not sure if it will be tonight, the last one took around 2 days!! Hopefully we will get some sleep tonight :roll:

not sure what the paper has in it but it smells alot, maybe the fumes did it? oh well my partners water just broke so looks like i'm in for a long night

looks like my whole locust breeding colony has just been wiped out, the only thing I think it could be is some sheets of scented paper my partner had hanging nearby, they were going to be drawer linings but they smelt so strong she thought she would put them out to air. I got home tonight and all the young and half off the breeders are either dead or having fits. anyone else something like this happen?

how much salt do you put in per litre of water for a salt bath?

i'll do that tommorrow Mark. And yes guys I know about changing water etc, I keep quite a few turtles inside and out, just let things get on top of me with new job and baby due any day. All the other turtles seem fine in the same tank, he just must have been a little weaker so it effected him faster.

hmm, I have just done a water test and found low Ph and a massive amonia spike, have done a filter change and 3/4 water change, never had this happen before but just shows poor maintenance for a couple of weeks and things happen fast. I will follow up with another water change tommorrow and see how he looks. hopefully this is the cause and he will come right.

I have just been doing my weekly maintenace and noticed one of my Reeves turtles not being as reactive as normal, I then noticed his eyes had gone very dark ( normally light around the outside) and when I took him out to have a look found that he stinks like a bad fish smell! Any ideas on what could be going on? My local reptile vet is closed until Monday. Cheers
