  1. there are a few of these around in private hands
  2. Genotypic Sex Determination so could be a mix of sexes.
  3. definately mountain minnows, will breed and form a good group, I used to have a big group in with the turtles but introduced goldfish eggs by mistake and they ate all the minnows. Can also chuck in guppies and platties over summer which will breed up fast
  4. i will get some pics later this week and put some up for you
  5. dont use standard circular blades, it will chip I use a special fin tooth circular blade that cuts very nicely but cost around $60.00-70.00
  6. easy to fix, big fines and long jail term, make the pay off not worth the punishment if caught, it really is in the hands of the law makers.
  7. YOU HAVE SEEN THORNY DEVILS FOR SALE? IS THAT A TUI AD?
  8. wow, probably the best scaping I have seen on here, build photos would be awesome, especially on background
  9. last year I had all turtles outside in ponds, snakenecks, red ears and Reeves, depends on age of them. just keep an eye on them, I had one reeves with an underlying shell rot problem that I brought back in and treated and one red ear started basking a lot so also brought in and treated for mild flu, both ok and outside again. that is out of 20 odd turtles so pretty good. Auckland weather similiar to where you find some snakenecks in lower Aussie and Reeves come from climates that get very cold in winter.
  10. yep, but they are so cute
  11. I think the system as it stands would be fine if governed correctly, I used to be a fan of being able to breed natives for sale but have changed my attitude as of late and now prefer the current set up, it encourages pure enthusiasts not people just trying to make a buck. I do beleive that if DOC provided more experienced keepers wild stock of dwindling species with the aim of releasing back into the wild there would be many with their hands up to help. If the government wanted to curb the smuggling it would set high penalties and make it not worth the risk for most - instead of a slap on the wrist! Just my thoughts on permit systems etc. by the way Dart frogs, iguanas, chameleons etc are very nice, if I find myself living in a country one day I will definately be keeping them.
  12. so... why do we need exotics in NZ? we do have a good range of natives that can be kept.
  13. Isn't the Aussie permit system based solely on keeping natives? - no exotics.. legally
  14. you can not buy or sell natives - all native species are protected. you will need to find a permitted keeper that has spare that they can give to you. like I said, spend some time going over the Nz herp website, all information is on there and ring DOC for information on what they require in your area.
  15. you need to get hold of your local DOC contact. you will need an outdoor enclosure made to their minimum specifications - normally they inspect this before issuing a permit. you may also have to provide a contact to them of the person you will get the native reptiles off. also join the NZ herp society check their website for all the info you need. http://www.reptiles.org.nz/
  16. I agree with JC254, Hothouse's are the best I have used and are NZ made, can't beat that!
  17. Congrats on the hatching, I can never get enough of the Reeves, great turtles to keep!
  18. Alan, I agree re beardies but they weren't mentioned as an option
  19. sounds like the leopards would be better, natives are not "hands on"
  20. looks like they want her gone for some reason, I don't think our company would keep an administration person for more than a week if this stuff was " serious misconduct"
  21. you need to get the cage first, the one on TM is a good cage to start with. contact your local DOC office http://www.doc.govt.nz/footer-links/contact-us/office-by-name/?mode=details&office=211 first you will need to get the cage inspected then start looking for Gecko, the Auckland greens or forest gecko are a good starter and usually not hard to get. Also a good idea to join the society as most keepers belong also. http://www.reptiles.org.nz/ Good luck and keep in mind, natives are addictive!
  22. our whole company is getting shouted to the first game and all really getting into it, can't wait till tomorrow night!
  23. I have found Spirulina flakes great for tadpoles as a main food
