Turning filter off at night
I hope this helps I have a 3 ft tank that I have had set up for about 10 years now. It has a layer of laterite, fine sand and then gravel as a base. It has a heater and a light (used to have CO2 but I put that in something else) and plants Base gravel is about 5-10 cm thick (maybe) I water change it when I remember(maybe a few times a year), feed it a couple of times a week. I NEVER vacum the Gravel It is HEAVILY planted with all sorts of Crypts and has guppies in it by the hundreds. It has no filter. It also has no algae that I can see and I hardly ever clean the glass. It is my homage to the old skool It is about balance Navarre

growing emergent rushes/reeds in aquarium
Hi Stella, This wont look nice but....you can buy water lilly pts that are all sorts of shapes and sizes and not that expensive. They are kinda like a sieve and designed for exactly what you are looking for...but usually they are hidden. I use one as a trap in a garden drain sump (in my kennels) and several as filter media baskets in my sumps. The good thing about them is if you used a few you coudl have several different types of plant in one area and they would/coudl work symbiotically as a whole or if a section fails then you can just replace those plants. Remember you may want to line with variing grades of gravel if you dont want ferts and stuff floating in your tank tho Navarre

growing emergent rushes/reeds in aquarium
HI Stella, One thing I have seen done, is the building of a rock wall with gaps in it, a wee way out from the back of the structure. This was back filled with gravel and peat etc and then the plants put in and over filled with more gravel to stop peat coming up thru top( this might not be such a problem for you). Then the plants were contained but could still filter and feed thru the gaps in the wall, yet couldnt invade the space either. They did however fill in the gap behind the "wall". Does that make sense. Anyway I have also seen it done with bricks with holes or gaps with great effect. I am not sure how wide your tank is but on a smaller scale doing something like this might mean that you can have more "invasive " plants. The other thing to consider, at the risk of undoing all the common sense I have just written, and whilst not aquatic or native is the range of Mondo grasses... some of which will tolerate paladial conditions and you can mix and match for colour and will also over hang..but to that end you could also use Iris's...lol Navarre

My brineshrimp setup? tips/advice wanted
I use a stocking foot cut off the leg and placed over an old coke bottle or measuring jug to strain mine. Cheap as chips and as easy to replace as the wearer ( just get someone to leave them behind or buy new from supermarket...lol) 8) sieves you can use to grade but I have never seen the point. Navarre

PLEASE HELP IDENTIFY TRIFFID??
If you plant the "pups" at the base of the "dam" then they tend to stay smaller. Competition for light all that stuff. If you move em away then they tend to get bigger. Light quality desnt tend to effect the growth rate ...poor light will kill em just like any other plant but high light does not keep em small either. HTH Navarre

Tank build 3 metres x 1.2 x 1.2 - Video added
If you are making this, could you not put "bracing" down front and use smaller pieces of glass. Like windows...not as pretty but very strong easier to handle and source and safer? Just thinking out loud ( not really cause I am in my office alone and talking whilst typing isnt a good look when people walk past, they mutter things like physician heal thy self and its not that hard to tell the patients from the staff...surely) Anyway....
