  1. Hi All, I would like some advice on how to get rid of Snails pre planting my plants. LOL Someone suggested on this list, Potassium Permanganate. Does anyone know what ratio you use to make a dip for the plants and how long do you leave the plant in the mix? I would appreachiate your help. Navarre

  5. Hi I have a UV sterilizer on my household H2O supply because I live in the Country and have well water. The water needs to be filtered to at least 5 microns for them to work properly so I am told. They do work well at killing live orgainisms under this size tho. including algae, fungus flagalates etc. The bulbs are a little expensive but that depends on size and they need replaciing every year. 6. Hi I think most people set their sums up to suit themselves but follow the "rules" to a certain extent. This is what I do and may be improved upon by others with more knowledge. My tanks where possible all have sumps. They are generally all predrilled with up to an inch hole. I usually make sure all my fittings are brought first and use common plumbing style fittings so that they are easily replaceable. All my plumbing is hard plumbed but with "screw" type joiners so that it can be removed if I need to change pumps move tank etc. So hole drilled, glass weir is glued in place and then bulkheads fitted to holes. Pipes from bulkheads to t section to sump. In sump you can arrange media in a huge variety of ways. I usually use compartments of different media that water flows over or under to be "cleaned", before going into a chamber that holds both my pump and heater. It is importatnt to make sure that the heaters are below the minimum water level and I always try for submersible heaters. The pump delivers water thru a return pipe which can go "up and over" or be drilled and plumbed in to the tank. If you do this you need to make sure that you have some way to stop water returning to your sump so that it doesnt overflow. Some people use a "prefilter" in their weir and this is easily replaced so that most large particles and the odd fish can be removed quickly....lol The ideal "sump" is above the tank and uses a pump to push water up to it then gravity to return it to the tank. This means it power etc goes of then no over flowing water and no need to drill tank. HTH Navarre

Many thanks, Have spent a bit of evening and some of today watching this tank and methinks that in a struggle to set up territories that some fish are not getting much food. So will seperate "pairs" out this pm. Do youthink this might help? Thanks in advance for your advice Navarre
  8. Hi there, If you get rid of the algae fast watch the nitrate/nitrites in your tank. The algae may be acting as a giant filter and if it is well established over a long period of time you might "spike" your tank. HTH Navarre

Hi Chaps and "Warren."... I was just wondering what you fed your Lionheadas on? I have just aquired about 10 of these great fish and have put them in a tank of their own but they seam to be fading away on me. There are in a bare bottom tank with some large shells and "holey" bricks. Tank is about 25 deg and has light to mod flow of H2O I am currently feeding Algae discs and JBL flake. Fish range in size from 3-7 cm and a mix of sexes. Sorry to hijack the post  Navarre

  12. Hi Ihave had mine for a year or so now as well and it is very good. A simple and effective filter that works well. I was a bit disapointed tho that for the price they do not come with any media. HTH Navarre
  13. Hey There, Mitre 10 in Rangiora has two bags left of the Aqua mix, but no sand...wrong time of year!!!! Incredulous!!! Its never the wrong time to start a new tank I told them. They gave me a blank look. Anyway.... I think it is 19.95 for 15l. So try the one near your house cichlid7. Also John at Orgainism has some nice fine gravel at about 2-3 mm which you might get away with instead of sand I think that was about 10.00 for 5 kg, he also has the JBL aqua mix cheapest in chch. So time you work in petrol if you cant get it in CHCH might be easier just to go there. HTH Navarre
  14. Hi , I have a plant tank, and have in it a range of crypts dwarf sag and a few other bits and pieces, that I set up about 6 years ago. I used small gravel (about 3-5mm) with laterite under it and it is about 100mm deep. I think the tank is about 150 l. I use Fluro lights and I have superb coverage and growth. I have had no probs with algae but I do get a little when the seasons change and I put this down to photoperiod or wave length changes. I had Indian fern as a "starter" plant and in all this time even when I was using C02 I have never ever had a filter of any kind. I have never cleaned the glass and I do a water change about 1x mth. So how many fish well I have ottos, bristle nose's, a couple of kribs and as many guppies as have ever bred. The heater is placed at the bottom of the tank so hot water rising generates water movement. HTH and good luck Navarre
  15. You could try useing household amonia to fishless cycle the tanks havent done it myself just read about it on net so cant recommend...just sugesting. Try a search on the www. HTH Nav
  16. Hi There, I have C. Afra M. Johanni/Interuptus C. Borleyi Juleis Guppies H. Lifalili Have just got some discus and some Geophagus so will see if they spawn as well when the time comes. Am happy to trade for the right fish   Nav
  17. Try a search on fishless cycling. I can remember reading somewhere that you use amonia to kick start your bacteria. You need to test 1 or 2 times a day and add household amonia dependant on results to get the cycle started. Cant remember much else HTH Nav
