Possums are cute...but a dead one is cuter. And of course they dont kill native animals....they just decimate the whole underpinning of the eco system that those natives depend on.....but dont you worry that little rainbow coloured head of yours cause soon somebody will spread a deadly little biosulphate in a counrty side near you and we will all be much better off. Navarre

Welcome Shyfan. It might help if you put your local in the profile so local people can help out. Well done with the move to tropicals and may MTS (Multiple Tank Syndrome) be the least of your worries Navarre

Hi All I have a glass system that is 1200 long and 200 or so wide split into 100x 100x 150 (there abouts) boxes it has a hole at each end for plumbing and small gaps under the partitions for water flow. needs some clean up Open to offers if anyone wants it. I have a fry tank that I stole the idea of (thank you by the way) That has a section that runs along theh back wall the whole lenght of the tank in this sits the spray bar, return hoses etc and heater. in front of this is devided front to back into 6 compartments for fry with small gaps under the glass to allow water to return. Perhaps you could do something like that Navarre

I use a fine gravel for my plant tanks and usually have a layered approach By this I mean that I place some sort of fert on the base of the tank. either Daltons or laterite aqua plus or some such. then about a 1-2 cm layer of sand and then at 2-4 cm layer of FINE gravel shifted from other gravel say 1-3 mm. That way I can control the colour etc (I like the dark stuff as well) I have used peat as a bottom layer and had no problems with it as long as you do little to no digging in the gravel. I dont vax the gravel just the mulm that bulids up on the surface of the gravel ( Vax is about a cm about the gravel when I water change) Another option is to use peat in a stocking in your filter. Boiling up so that it sinks then add to a stocking tie off and put in filter. Both these methods will up set water clarity a bit but that will soon settle. I am not sure that wood broken up will be that effective nor that consistant as once it finishes releasingtannins it will be hard to mainatin at an easy level where with the peat you can just change it out of the stocking and replace I have never scattered peat on top ofthe sand to alter ph as this will just be swirled aroudn and foul the tank and then be removed with a water change. Good point David. My mistake as I thought we were talking about sumps proper rather than trickle filters or towers. One of teh guys here has a 6x2x2 tank that has a small sump and a glass tower the height of his tank ( about 1200 from memory) The water flows very quickly thru the tower of media but is "perculated" in the sump thru all sorts of stuff. Best of both worlds perhaps? Thsi works well for him but is not for me as I prefer all my tanks to have the sumps above or below the main tanks Good luck with how your one works out Matt Nav

I was under the impression that if you are using a sump then you need to allow time for all those bacteria to do their thing. So mechanical section can have as much water flowing as it can handle but biological section should be slow and steady to allow for the denitryfing bacteria etc to do their thing. Hence most sumps run slower than say a canister filter or the like. Just my impression tho and if what you do works for you then so be it Navarre

Hi There, I use sumps on my 6x2 and 4x18 and on several of my breeding stand. Sumps work best with slow flow so you may need to work out an internal flow ( just like marine). depends on type of fish. Also sumps remove CO2 so if you are going to plant then you need to allow for that or not use one. Sumps ize is up to you. I have seen the smallest sumps around and they work cause they are mainatined. BUT I work on a minimum of 10% of tank total volume as an "at least" size. This increases water volume and helps hide all that stuff you dont want to see. I would use baffles every time if I could and mould them to fit heater etc as thsi does mean you cant really (you can but its diificult) use the sump as an extra tank but it does help with planning flow and cleaning etc. HTH Navarre

Great start. well done. If you dont mind I might suggest that you tilt your heater a little. This means that the "hot water" rises up and away from your heater. That in turns provides a great heating surface without the heater flicking on and off thus extending its working life. HTH Navarre

yes would hate to be pushing daisies....

LA Said better than my deleted post Opportunity has arrisen several times to "legalise" things in NZ but because ppl dont want what they have as public knowledge we dont have an "open" market to what is here and what is not. Hard to get stuff and harder still to keep lines pure. (and man is it expensive...lol)
-
If you had my luck you would be cycling on your own as well. still better to be doing that then not at all then you would be .... acyclist
-
still better to be a pedal pusher than to be accused of going it solo...you know a uni cyclist
-
such as reptor? What should we be worrying about here and now? ( other than my spelling)

not as bad as Bi Cycle but I would hate for anyone here to be called a ... ....pedal pusher!!!! Nav

and in better condition! lol

Bond may have been easy but he was never cheap and he certainly is easy on the eye at the moment. Bit like those two girls in the Chuck TV program...cant beleave the bruntte is evil. Or that they killed Donna off in True Blood...now she was cute with a captial everything. Anyway as I said Now someone has spawned the alto calvus...and goodness knows how they got here.... all I would need to make my day is for someone to say ahh here you go heres a couple of dozen for you to grow out ...oh and by the way you are first line line for those pesky gold heads as well, darn things. I just cant seem to get them to stop breeding. Only Boring people get bored I am told so in that case ...yup pick me lol Nav
-
Man this line is getting longer and longer Might not be any left soon and who knows how long you will have to wait average growth rate is 2cm in 6-9 mths so hey by 2037 we might all have and inch of fish. (Leave it I say). Anywho. Alto Calvus sp Black Very Nice and Alto Comp sp Pearl or white even Better. Now all we need is some one to bring on the Red Heads (Goldhead). Ahh reminds me of a shaun c line from a 007 movie Mr Bond do you prefer Blonde Brunette or Red head...? ahh I have no preference really, blonde, brunette, red head, it doesnt really matter as long as they have matching collars and .......calvus really it was a family show. Navarre

Or you coudl go african..... Aulanocara  lol or central american...C Temporalis  Despite the bad taste in Fish (jokes) it woudl be great if you could post some pictures. Good luck with the tank....I hope itgoes well for you Nav

If you are not paying teh bill then set up a tank with something you cna help cover expenses. That way you can keep cool fish, and have somethingthat difers cost. Prove to your dad that is a win win...you know like keeping you off the internet and is moderately cost even (lol, lmao) but you get teh idea I hope. Navarre

Matto it is the graph that says that whilst girls may never buy you things they have certain other benifits that are priceless. Like the way they smile in a manner which makes your heart skip a beat...or the way that with their icey talons they can rip your heart from your chest and feed it to you before you hit the ground, and not even blink. But still have you coming back for more Bitter ...who me....never Oh and they are soft and warm and fuzzy in a way that casues disbeleif ( ) so some are way more worth percervering with than others ( not many if any tho) Makes Hastey retreat covering delecate parts of keyboard
