  1. I am sorry for the rant....and for the target. It was not an attack Stella. I just can not beleave the short sightedness of some of our conservation policy. And some of the thinking behind it. I disagree just as much with putting chemicals from run off into our streams as I do with the whole "lets make money from it". But I do see a place for both. I know Stella has more experience than most with some of our rare native fish. But one walk thru our forests will tell you something is not right with our current policies either. As I said above Balance. As alanmin suggest else where now is the time for change. This proposal re herpts and birds seems at a first reading to be a double edged sword. The fact that several specie are not on the current permit list (both exotic and native) is interesting. Also that some specie that are on the proposed new list are not that common...just commonly kept, is also interesting especially when you bring in Hybrids and the fact that some herpts in NZ are very hard to tell apart from the dorsum (the suggested standard of ID) especially when there are colour morphs and you then need to include eye colour and shape and also palete colour. Will need more time to look at this, as another concern is timeframe for grandparenting and for making submissions. Hope that this brings this thread back on track and I will save my Rants for those else where. Navarre
  2. "This is the most powerfull hand gun in the world. Thats right a 44 magnum. And right now your asking yourself did he fire five shots or six. Am I that lucky. Well Punk are you? Are you THAT lucky?"...or sumthinglike it.... Harry Callahan also "shesh.shhhh.zipppit. zippit good.shooosh.shep.shhhhhhhhooooossh." Dr Evvvvil. Best line ever tho.... "So, why dont you come up to teh Lab. And see whats on the Slab. itll have you shivering in antici.................................................................................................................................................................................................Pation!" 3. Well Stella thats the problem that I have with a lets take it back to pre european mentality. In NZ there WERE native grazers. Thats why so many of our plants change foliage after they get to a certain height. Or so some theories suggest. I dont think that one specie should be excluded to preserve another however. Take Thar or Tahr depending on your accent. They are endangered in their native land, Just like the Dama Walleby or the Hammerhead. Now I am on a soap box here. There are VERY importanat natives and these should be preserved. No Questions asked. But there are introduced species here that are genetically diverse and in some cases just as unique and rare and the should be managed as well. The fact that some have a commercial value is a by product of that diverstity. Lets take the above example. Some Yank wants to pay 50g for a Tahr well so be it. Dont forget all the other expnses they contribute like food and fuel and infrastructure. What upsets me is that unlike other places we are not taxing that income and resourcing proper animal MANAGEMENT. Both Exotic and Native. Not just eradication. Long live a biophosphate poison that creates slient bush after all. I mean what is a few sterile lizards and flightless birds to get rid of a nasty old possum that caught TB of one of our cows anyway. I am a hunter, and I am a nature lover. Some of the hardest working conservationalists I know fit into those labels. I manage my enviroment and I give back from where I take. Its not all about bloodsport. Its about balance. That is not what we have here. and it is not what you were talking about either. We would be better off spending money to police rodents, rodent killers (lol) and rabbits and possums than we would the ruminant version of a large extinct bird. Very Disapointing.
  4. Wonder what this means for those who keep exotics? Navarre
  5. Thank you. How big is your tank? I have several 2.25 coke bottles that I leave outside and they get good sun. They go green and I add the contents to my fry tanks. Was just hoping that someone had an easier way around the amounts you need. Thanks again Navarre
  6. Can you give me some tips on getting your water that green? I have some blackwater spieces that I would like to breed in the new year and would like to get tanks sorted first for fry, which are also very small and hard to feed/ slow growing. I am thinking would need to be around 6 mths before bbs is appropriate Any hints tips would be appreachiated. Navarre
  7. I would like to say thank you to the mods for not removing this thread. It has had its flames (sorry for the play on words). Despite having raised my head earlier on as a potential target...lol....this thread has certainly identified a few people whom I shall be... or stay... in contact with, as I strive to "keep" quality fish. This has been a great topic and I have learnt a lot. Thank you to you all..well nearly all of you.... Navarre
  8. Welcome....pity about the Auckland thing.... But Welcome Anyway. LOL Nav
  9. I some have some H. leucocephala. Enuff to post some to you if you are keen. Pm if interested. Nav
  10. Hi Living Art, How do you get on for UV with all that plastic/Novoroof? Nav
  11. You all make some very good points. Some I will take much more seriously than others. My point is still the same. I breed fish. I do it because I like doing it. I have worked hard to get the fish I have. If they are not the real deal then I will be disapointed. But that is as far as those fish go. As you say Quality is much better than Quanity I am at time geographically isolated to some of the good fish I want. I dont mix specie or sub specie so what I get I keep "pure". But I am only as good as the person I brought my fish from in the first place. So now I have some fish that were sold to me (by a trusted fisho) as A. sp Rubens Firebird. I have not mixed em with anything else but now what do I call em. And if I breed em, do I sell em even if they breed true? Just the same with the A sp M Reds or Golds or so on. I can search the ether and as you say get different results depending on the local of the posters. I have been lucky so far that certain people have helped verify fish prior to purchase so I am happy with what I have. But I will always bow to more experienced fish keepers. I do this just like you. There is no economy in the scale I keep fish...esp in NZ so I do it for the love. There will always be people who do it for the $$ and it is up to us to rise above that. I hope you will be there when I try. lol Nav
  12. I wasnt taking a joke here. Just that some exporters get Flowerhorns into NZ by calling them Severums...which they used to be...lol As for Aulonocara nyassae. There is a school of thought and lots of research that all Aulonocara are Nyassae and that everything else is a sub specie. Therefore even tho there is only 1 Aulo on the list it means with the right research in your hands you could bring in any Hapilchrome or Aulo sub speice. Which means that even tho its called one thing it could be several diferent things. I am Not disagreeing with firenzenz. Agree wth that 100%. Problem is for someone who is new and has 7-8 Aulanocara sp. How do I know they are what they are. I can only sell/breed/keep them as what they were sold to me as. So if you sell me a Firebird Guppy then thats what I have. The problem is when I sell that as Guppius Firebirdiiusiibergiusiiusii. Comes back to the fact that NZ has a double import standard and as keepers thats what we have. Dont agree with that either but thats how it goes.
  13. LOL at David. You mean like flower horns or Parrot cichlids? Nav
  14. Well it was great to watch. What can I say Once a pervert always a pervert. And was OK soccer as well Not as good as teh Dutch (i think) womans soccer at teh Olympics but close. Nav

  16. Barrie you forgot.... claddy wood boats, sling shots and punga huts. Possuming and body surfing Sleeping out in the back yard and drinking water straight from a ..OMG ...creek. Shooting your first deer and then having to carry the blardy thing. Or being above the bush line and watching a sunrise for the first time And as for cartoons...you have all forgotten the greatest of them all The Ghost who Walks. Kit Walker with his horse Hero and Wolf Dressed in a purple tights with dual 45s Death skull ring and his crossed swords. And he was drawn and the comics published in Australia. Butchered by Billy Zane in that horrible late 90s movie..... Oh you know who he was..... He IS the..... PHANTOM...
  17. What about hydrocottles (sp?)? They are the plants that are like little water lilly leaves. hot or cold water growth and easy to maintain? Nav
  18. The other thing Alan, Is that some herpt keepers wont swap animals unless they are swabbed for Salmonella. But some recent studies suggest that up to 60% of the native population carry it anyway....!!! It does tend to be species specific. And it was my impression that where we use E Coli to digest food in our gut some reptiles use Salmonella to do the same thing...not sure but i think I read that some where. Navarre
  19. Hi Simon, I just have some Q's for you. Why the bubbler? Do you "dose" the water with nutrients? Did you put ferts in the potting mix? What temps are you running the tank at and what is the photo period? Sorry for the 20 questions but just interested. Navarre

  22. Well there have been several posts about how great spring is now it is here. But the reason I like it is this.... Its my 2nd to last week working from home and I start my new job soon. So I thought Id go "walk the garden". Came back an hour later with thousands of little black aphid things I have picked of the herb garden. Fish Newts Herpts all doing leaps of joy at them. Spring is great heaps of fresh, free, live, food. LOL Nav
