  1. Yeah, alot of them were swimming but i found the eggs settled on the bottom of the bottle not floating to the top like the instructions usually say. In the end i just used a large syringe to suck them out then just rinsed them in fresh water. Also i think i put way too much eggs in to start with. :-?
  2. AH HA! i think thats where i was going wrong a bit. Just hatching them then feeding them. I should let them 'grow' a bit 1st. Plenty of time to get it right i guess........ Rome wasn't built in a day,... two maybe....
  3. I did grab a bottle of sea/river water to start the first bottle off, as per instructions, then hubby told me the river wasnt the best place to get it, Will go to the beach tomorrow as it was raining today. The second bottle i have in there i just tried adding rock salt until no more would dissolve ( read it on google) And they hatched in 12 hrs easy. I guess whatever works best for everyone.
  4. lol... Thank you but in no way is this the "Next Big Thing" I took some pics and will post them when i can (i'm at work at the moment) but alas will have to modify it slightly as the sucker keeps letting go. I think its the angle i have the bottle on. But i can say it worked. I fed the baby corys some this avo. The only problem i have is the unhatched eggs sink to the bottom of the bottle. How do you avoid this? Am I not Leaving them long enough to hatch? Mind you i am experimenting with hatching and water / salt etc. Only ever tried those pre-made packs, just add water types.
  5. No worries, will get some small snaplock bags for it all. Hey Barrie, have modified your hatchery a bit. As i'm using a moulded tank with built in hood, i have found the little black suckers that hold the heaters are a perfect fit for a small drink bottle neck. The bottle sits perfectly in the water - upside down- and only takes up a fraction of the space. Will put another 2 bottles in tomorrow linked together with the airline tubing. Thanks again
  6. I'm just wondering where is the best place to store un-hatched brine shrimp eggs? Fridge, freezer or just in the cupboard. Its in a sealed container but its a large lot and i dont want it ruined.
  7. I have come to the conclusion i have 6 male and 2 female pearl gourami. The dorsal fins on the fems are rounded and the males are longer and coming to a point. They are still getting along ok (they are brother and sisters). The thing is they are all the same size except for 1 fem. So Question is:::::: Do i look at getting rid of the females to stop interbreeding and aggro later, Do i swap some males for females, do i just down size and get rid of some males? Also what is the best ratio for them, M- F, And do they pair up or will they pair up if i leave just 2 of each?. Thanks
  8. We have been out with the longline yesterday (southbeach) and today (karaka st) and only caught a kahawai [sp?] Good fun but. Enough for hubby's dinner tho, as i dont like the taste of fish. But i love fishing.
  9. I have Pearl Gourami x8 and theyre real characters. They mostly school together, have a heirachy, show off, Eat from my fingers when it comes to freeze dried worms. Just great to watch overall. But do check with someone about the rams. I think i have read somewhere that they are the 'nicer' of the cichlid? Not too sure about suitable tank mates for them. Perhaps a couple of small bristlenoses? Theyre fun to watch on the glass.
  10. Have found a very old thread that was of use... (2003) Saying the eggs that are clear/ tan coloured are fertile and the eggs that have a white arc in them, (that look like there's something in there) Aren't fertile. I have cleaned out the 1st lot i collected as they were growing fuz, Luckily for me they laid some more overnight. All be it 1/2 on the heater but the other half on the glass i was able to collect. Fingers crossed.
  11. I syphon the bottom once a week then top up with the hose. IMO, You'll probably never see WCMM in a pond, esp planted. Goldies (all types) are great as they learn to feed from you hand and get very friendly after a while. As mine have grown over the years.. i have added more tubs and divided the fish so there's only a couple in each. Easier to keep the sexes seperate too for the breeding season. Although i did see 2 very lucky 2cm babies swimming amongst the plants today. Lucky to not have been eaten
  12. Hey, Thanks for that, i might be down in the next 2 weeks or so.
  13. i wouldnt with gold fishes, theyre messy at the best of times. A clean floor makes it so much easier to syphon the muck. Ive found the water lillies are great in the warmer months for keeping green algae at bay but you need good coverage. mine are covered with duckweed too so you never see the fish, just scoop it aside to view/clean etc.
  14. Awesome, i dont have any worms as they dried up when i was on holiday. But i'm sure they wont know any different if they dont get any.
  15. Ok, after moving a couple of my bronzes into a spare tank i have set up and waiting for my Killies .... they spawned last night. I have only ever managed to grab one lot of eggs from the community tank as the greedy fish would eat them as soon as mum laid them down. And only 1 successfully lived... until i sent him to his death in a killie mouth. Any hu.. Not seeing eggs develop for a while, i'm curious as to the white part in the shell. Is this the embryo developing? I have scrapped approx 40 into a floating container but there is another large lot on a plastic leaf and 2 smaller lots on the tank wall but low down. All eggs look the same. (outer clear shell with white inner) They dont look fungused...yet. I've added some meth blue to the container but have decided to leave the other eggs alone. After lots of net searching i'm not going to feed them egg yolk, as i did last time. But i will feed bbs and powdered flake 2-3 times a day and clean the container everyday. Anything else i should do or not do? Ive read the less you interfere the better. Thanks.
  16. I know theyre not puppies anymore.... but still our babies. Tuf is on the left - 3yrs, Cain on the right - 9yrs. We also have a beardie working dog (Blue) that spends alot of time on farms being 'borrowed'. Hes a great dog that works for anyone and is about to be a dad for the first time.

    Nice tank

WOW. thats such a good idea having the false wall so you can get in behind it. So cool to see Brian thanked his wife, you forget how much the other halves actually do help.
  18. Frontline works well, but i have only used it on the dogs bedding, not a large area like a house. I agree to do it right the first time. Saves mucking round later.
  19. Cover you tanks? We bombed a rental after we moved in and i just got a drop sheet from the red shed- cost about 1.50, covered the tank and taped it tight. Failing that you can buy frontline spray and dose you carpets that way. Cost more than a bomb tho.
  20. Heaps of blankets wrapped over it. Cant wedge it between drawers or something large and stable?
  21. I'm usuaslly behind the camera so this is a rare shot...... and i'm smiling  Oh... i'm on the right

    Baby Fish

Sorry for thread-jacking. I was wondering where all my guppy fry were going.-----> Into the swordtails mouths.
  23. NO WAY!!!!! My hubby has the exact same one on his shoulder. If the rat is holding the gun behind its back?? Small world He's currently blending others around it rather than covering altogether. He did tell me why he got it 8) a looooooooong time ago. Tats are addictive  We got our ring fingers done for the engagement (just for something different) as i'm not a jewellery person.
  24. No funnily enough, we werent far from it but as we were using public transport, no-one told us there was only 2 busses a day to go there and return. We ended up going to the zoo where they had a kids petting part, little miss loved the goats and deer.
  25. We went to Melbourne and Adelaide. I would recommend Melb for the shopping  Very nice historical buildings etc. Adelaide we found was boring, except for the zoo and seahorse farm (which u couldn't take pics )
