  1. Long time no post......busy busy... just wanting to cut down the tanks before we go away on holiday and wondering if i could introduce the two 3spot gouramis (that are in a tank by themselves) to my community tank. This has in it: 8 juvie pearl gourami (starting to boss the gupps around) 6 neon tetra, 2 glow light tetra, 6 corydora ( 3 adult and 3 juvies), 4 iti bity bristlenose plecs (approx 1 inch) and approx 20 guppy (darn things keep breeding) I have no problem giving some guppy away to lighten the load. Oh yeah 3ft planted tank, been a bit neglected in the water change dept. but getting back to normal. Will be away for 10-12 days.

    new fish pics

hey Barrie, thanks very much for your help. yes i have 1/2 the tank planted for shelter etc, and the other 1/2 will be for a peat pot eventually. I have just brought a brick of peat to sort thru and clean up. the breeding will be more of an experiment for me anyway as im looking for something a little more challenging than my goldies spawning. Plus my other fish are in a comm tank and only some guppys survive.

    new fish pics

they are by no means the greatest photos but i hope they are ok for you to see. This guy (and a girl) arrived last week and has settled in well. I made the horrible mistake to put my only surviving corydora fry in the tank  which i thought would have been big enough... or too big for the mouths. alas,,,, it got hunted down and bbq'd. They are currently eating a mix of tubifex worms and a tiny bit of crushed flake and white worms. The girl has no problem eating anything but the boy just stares upwards with a silly grin on his face. He will only eat if the food is above him and wont dive down to pick up food. I dont know if you can see but he has a small white edge around his fins. Anything to be worried about? I did ask about using salt (in someones threat i hijacked). I have them in the spare room so there's not much traffic but it seems he does a little dance every time i come in. Cute.

    Salt

Sorry to jump on your ship, my new killifish, (the male) looks to have a slight white edge round his fins. Would a dash of salt be recommended? is it non-iodised, rock salt or just anything? Thanks.
  6. Thanks for that everyone.
  7. Oh thanks, just wondering what a good temp is too?
  8. Ok thanks for that. Will get some pics when they've settled in.
  9. I have some new killies coming this week (Nothobranchius Korthausae Yellow trio) and theyre going into a tank (21ltr) that has been up and running for a year...or more??. It has previously housed WCMM and i thought i'd leave some of the fruit salad pebbles in 1/2 the tank and leave the other 1/2 bare to use for a peat pot. Its covered and I have also left some plants in there(weighted down). It has a sponge filter and now a heater. Is there anything else i need for them? It has no light and no direct sun, but in a light room (never gets bad algae). For the peat pot i have made a round container with lid and cut a hole in the lid. The local garden centre sells bricks of peat moss - untreated, i havent got any yet tho. Thanks Barrie for the offer, if it still stands for some peat, i'll take some. I have found a small spare tank to start a bbs hatchery too. I think that covers it.... if anyone has any input or something else i should do?? Thanks in advance.
  10. Hey Graeme, let me know how you get on up there as we were thinking of going up in the new year. Nice place to visit, we always go for a dip in the mineral spa, very relaxing. (if you go straight until you hit the water, turn left, thru a couple of lights then it's sign posted) Cant say i've seen a pet shop up there tho. Wonder where the critters is?? Catch ya, Stac.
  11. That really depends on how big they are, what youre wanting for them and if anyone wants them. sort of a 'how longs a piece of string question'. IMO if you want a certain amount for them, advertise that and if no one bites, then perhaps youre asking too much.
  12. ive found its easier to pull it all out, set up the clutch and pressure plate ect with new motor, on a table. That way you can make sure the clutch works (putting in gear) then put all back in the car together. then once you have the motor sitting in place, you can jack the gearbox up and bolt it in place then do your engine mounts. Easier if you dont have the use of a pit. Plus i like working with lots of room. The only down point is you really have to move the car/motor around to get it all in place. Hondas have nice small motors.

    Air Pump

I use a ' Hi-Tech' aquarium air pump 1500, which has a single outlet, runs at 2.5psi, 1.5ltr/min, suitable to filter an aquarium of 18"x12"x12", 35decibels. Recommends you can run 2-3 air features from it. Its in the spare room but i put a sponge cloth (xlo i think)under it and there's no noise at all. oh ,,, just the bubbles. cant remember the exact price but wasnt over $50 that for sure. Hows your fish going?? recovering ok i hope?
  14. Thought about that but everywhere you go there are always males. (good looking i guess) i'm one for the underdog. i would choose all girls over all boys. but by keeping a pair they might just want to have some fun.
  15. i definatley think the killies that lay in peat are far more interesting. My hope was to have just 1 true strain in a seperate tank from my community tank. Not to get too many (to start ). My dad's keen for me to get some as he did have them many years ago. Im sure i am not going to be breeding to sell tho. As my WCMM havn't even looked at multiplying in the 3 years i've had them. my fish are purely for asthetic enjoyment .
  16. put a heap of plants n the tank, plastic or real, fixed and floating. They'll hide well enough.
  17. Hey thanks Wok, The golds are nice, i like the Nothos best but will do some serious research before getting anything.
  18. it was over a week. Thats the only thing i could think of that would make them pale and lifeless. ?? The gourami were all ok and didnt seem to be acting any different. Perhaps the temp was more during the day??? but as i was working fri night, sat morning, sat night, i didnt really pay much attention to the fish. Ive noticed my smaller tank gets a couple of degree higher in the warm days.
  19. well, update. the white spot has well and truly gone. did 3 treatments with gravel vacs inbetween. All happy ect. then i got home from work sunday morning about 12am. turned the lights on to have a looksie.............. one of the corys was real pale. (What now???!!!) then i noticed my WCMM very pale, the 3 male gups lifeless and pale. (one was resting on a leaf) HMMMM thought about it........ I hadn't turned the heater back down. My thermometer obviously wasnt working right, i got hubbys multi-meter and yep, 28*. So there i was at 12.30am doing a small cool water change. Just enough to bring it down to 27 then turned the heater down to 25 (normal) OMG i cant believe i almost cooked the fish. But thankfully they were all ok in the morning.
  20. na, the general pond snails i have found eat the fish waste (and algae when bigger) and you just end up with snail waste instead. But i must say they have kept a tidy home since i've had them.
  21. i just have mine in another small tub with lillies. They get fed a mix of crushed egg yolk one day and very finely crushed (almost powdered) flake the next. Careful using egg yolk as it fouls the water quick. Chuck a couple of snails in if you have some. Weekly (sml) water changes, perhaps an airstone and sponge filter if in a tank. Bbs when theyre slightly bigger. Weed out the deformed ones ie; bent back, no tail etc. When you look at them everyday, they dont seem to grow. Most of the ones you have in the pond will be fair game for the parents if they can catch them too, unless you have heaps of plant cover. Hope that helps.
  22. unreal, i have 8 pearl gourami and 2 three spot (thanks Ryanjury ) and theyre all fine with water changes. dart around a bit but back to normal in 10-20min.
  23. Hey cichlidmad, how have you got on with the killies? I was wanting to get either a pair or trio after xmas. Have you got yours yet??
  24. ok, so the white spots have gone, i did a gravel vac, topped up with water of same temp, added more wunder cure (second dose). Just wondering now what do i do about the filter wool?? Wont i have to change it completley? I havent got a spare tank to run some through but i have got some stress zyme that apparently adds bacteria (used for setting up new tanks) Or should i just give the current wool a darn good rinse? The fish are all happy as the corys are still laying and the guppies are still popping fry out. Have hatched 2 wee corys and managed to net another 10 eggs today whilst filling the tank up.
