  1. Thanks for that Caryl, on closer inspection he has 2 scales missing by the dorsal fin on one side. No sharp objects but could have got caught behind the filter i guess. what size tank do you recommend for them? It seems they just keep growing every time we get a bigger one for them. :-?
  2. I know this sounds weird but thats what it looks like. A bruise, kind of under the jaw but not on the gill plates. (they say these things happen in 3's) It popped up overnight. Theyre due for a water change and filter clean. But nothing different. This fish is about 4yrs old, There are 4 large goldies in a 120ltr tank, with Large filter. They have been together since this one was 1" long. But only in this tank for 6-8wks. We upgraded from a 90ltr to give them more room. Thanks for looking. ps: i have a fantail with strange white marks on the tail with a picture in the diseases section if you think you can help also.
  3. Ok i think this will be better to see.
  4. Sorry, not too sure how to post a big picture.
  5. hi there, my fantail has developed a white mark on his tail. Only noticable on his right side but looks like it might be starting on the left. quite worrying. Its almost raised with the rest of the fin (behind the mark) trailing behind. He has been introduced to 3 new friends (smaller fans who were in quarantine for 10days) And has accepted them well. Have we caught something from them? or is this a stress thing?
  6. Thanks for that, i forgot to mention that they are in an unheated tank (if that makes a difference?)
  7. Did a water change /siphon on the wcmm tank and the very next day 2 of the females were dead on the bottom. Mentioned it to someone who breeds goldies and they said just put some regular salt in 'any time they look out of sorts'. Is this recommended? and how much? Its only a small 20ltr tank with java moss and a few small stalks of plant (floating and planted) and now 5 wcmm. It has a small filter also. Had them all for about a year and no real problems. Any help will be great.
  8. I read somewhere to soak dog (or cat) bikkies in oil to feed the worms instead of bread. I soaked dog biks in water to try 1st and they loved it.
  9. I have a goldfish that just swims constantly in circles to its right. It was spawned in a 4mtr x 4mtr x 1.5mtr pond b4 xmas and currently living in a bath so theres no confined space. It has no trouble eating and getting around but it does so in circles. Do fish get neurological problems or is this just bad luck?
  10. Unreal thanks Snookie. Sub.z ... no problem there, happy to share. Will keep you informed on how i go.
  11. Anyone had experience breeding apple sanils? i have about 6-8 of them and just wondering if i need to do anything special to set the mood? candle light dinner.... soft music.....
  12. I have a 70ltr, 90ltr, 120ltr with goldies, shubs, 8 x apple snails and a fantail in the lounge and a 20ltr with a couple WCMM and 2 x tiny black moores (spawned jan). Outside i have 3 ponds with goldies and shubs that bred last season. And just cleaned out another yesterday to have as a planted pond with lillies, oxygenators and some sort of floating plant. ( dont know the name ) and lots of pond snails.
  13. Smallest is about 4mm, largest is about 12mm. have found 2 dead today.
  14. Just goldfish fry. I've moved them inside so i can keep a closer eye on them. So far no more floaters. They have been in the tub since Jan and no problems.
  15. Hi there, the last of my fry which i keep in an outside bath have been turning up dead or dying with what looks like burst bellys. I have 3x oxygenating plants in there, do weekly water changes and 2x weekly syphon cleans (for waste). The only thing different is i recently hatched some brine shrimp to feed them. They start going sideways then have a type of fungus on their gills (while still alive.....just) But those ones have a split by the belly. ??? It started with a couple 2 wks ago but now i'm getting 4-5 a day easy. I had a 70ltr tank set up inside for some newbies to go into so have put the fry in there instead. It has one big plant and a corner filter. I can see a couple with quite distended bellys, am i over feeding them?? they just get a couple of pinches of crushed fry food. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  16. Thanks for all the input. The fish (goldies) are just 3-4cm in length but i do have some that are hitting the 10cm mark that i'd rather not risk.
  17. Hi there, i have been asked to send some fish to the south island via the courier. My question is, air in the bag or oxygen? Do ppl really use oxygen or just air. I read on here to put your air hose in (frm the pump) and blow up the bag. Is that ok to do or could you use an oxy shell (or part of one) or even oxy weed? And there seems to be a debate on Cardboard v's Polystyrene. I've noted same day or overnight courier NOT 2-3 day, and no feeding the day before, water change the day or two before. Im a bit stuck as to what to do with the air part and my eyes feel like from searching / reading. THANKYOU THANKYOU
  18. Mine finished at the end of Jan.
  19. Can someone please tell me whats the best foods to feed Goldfish fry? I used liquifry for the 1st week, introduced cooked egg yolk, now onto mega tiny crushed flake. What else can i give them? Some are still only about 6mm long. Thanks.
  20. My comets spawned this xmas and i have 1 bubba thats about 2cm long and the rest are 1cm or smaller (like theyve just escaped the egg). Is this normal to have 1 bigger than the rest? or is this 1 just a bully? I have them in a seperate pond so they dont get eaten by the parents and i feed them 2x a day. Any comments/ help would be great.
  21. Hi All, finally joined this wonderful site. Have had a couple of goldfish for many many years and decided i wanted to know MORE and of course checked the internet. WOW!!!! Was i blind to thier needs. So.... now my fish have a HUGE tank, lighting, filtration, varied diet, live plants and a couple of new friends. i also have a couple of deep baths and a few fish outside. Thats taken a few months to get it right. Plants, cleaning etc. Well around xmas they were spotted spawning, and after a few nights research we have 100+ (probably more) itty bitty fish. I have them in another well covered and shaded bath. Anyway.... a BIG THANKS to everyone on here that asked for help and who answered them with great advise. It got me involved more and found a new interest. ps: Go the Wangas/Manawatu fish club!
