  1. If you ring the council, they should be able to tell you if any thing is added to your well.... In theory anyway.
  2. There's a few peeps in here now if anyone's bored...
  3. Pretty much all fish are shy when you first add them to a tank. Just give them time to adjust to the new setting.
  4. http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic ... -DOC-lease This is the state of one of my locals... DOC attempts to protect, National ministers overthrow decision and continue to allow deterioration
  5. Ignorant/negligent pet owners make me so angry *seethes* Poor birdy
  6. I think they are beautiful fish. What's with all the hating? Sounds like some people are just bitter they can't afford the pricetag (well, me included..)
  7. Totally Tanked's Feb meeting will be held on: Sat 5th February 3pm onwards Humvee's new house/farm near Rangiora (Please PM for exact address) Please bring something bbq-able or salady to share for tea. Hehe, I can't wait to meet the new piggies and turkeys and other farm animals. I'll be working that day so prob won't be there til 5.30 + though
  8. That is kinda crappy, and I would be annoyed if I'd had to do NCEA and I don't like the NCEA system... But I can assure you, as soon as you start your next step in education, Uni or Tech or whatever, your high school NCEA credits become irrelevant. Once you have your next qualification no employer gives a toss what you got in high school. So stop worrying about what other people get, let them have their NCEA and look forward to your bachelors degree.
  9. Well, yeah but its not the same is it?... I dunno what subject name that comes under, but Getting 100 credits in say 'farm studies' is different from getting 100 credits in 'maths'. So the employer/uni would look at the subjects done wouldn't it? If you're academic minded you'd be better off doing academic subjects rather than wasting your time doing the driving tractors unit. I mean, I'm academically minded too so the old system suited me fine. But I suppose you gotta take into consideration the people who aren't, give them some sort credit if they are awesome at whatever practical skill/trade they want to do.
  10. Hahaha, that's awesome. I suppose you could argue that at least students who are less academic are still gaining a qualification in something practical? Anyway, so happy I was the last year of the old system. And of course universities will never get on board with NCEA, they'd become laughing stocks internationally! A degree here would become unrecognised.
  11. I don't *think* it does any harm to leave it in, I know of people who've had filters that came prestocked with it (think Aquaone tanks) who haven't changed it for very long periods with no obvious ill effects... But it won't be helping anyway, better to scrap it and put in a better media.
  12. *cough*trytorrentsites*cough* I've learnt that it's not worthwhile buying textbooks, I use them from the library only. (and on my computer if I need to at home...
  13. Adorable! *wonders if she can convince the parrots at work to dance...*

    Fish Quiz?

    Must be a killie then!
  15. Try using a smellier bait, use a variety of baits (sardines? fish? catfood? rotten fruit?),make sure it stays moist (but not soaking) have it in a sunny spot, low to ground... Don't clean all out the dead flies once you catch they cos they add to the smell.
  16. On another pet forum they were discussing more pet-friendly fly repellents and hanging a bunch of mint in the room seems to deter flies coming in. You could also try things like setting smelly traps in the garden so that instead of heading in open windows, they go in the traps. There's a Trademe seller in Chch who sells awesome traps if you can't be bothered making your own. These won't be 100% effective I imagine, but could be worth a try if it cuts fly numbers.
  17. I can give you a white worm culture if you want Trilio. They are good for freaking people out, a mass of seething little worms.
  18. I normally don't like rain, but am so happy its raining on Canterbury today, there were fires everywhere.
  19. This happens whenever I clean all the drips down between the back of the tank and background. Sucks for shops to lose biggest day of year.
  20. Lucky! I got one of the 4 Ingredients cookbooks (yus, hate cooking so I love easy cookbooks!) and it has a petfood section... It recommends cutting up a cheerio into fine pieces ('so the fish don't choke' and feeding to my fish. I'm not sure if it means the cereal or the small red sausage. The other fish recipe says to put a bit of pumpkin in the tank (which is fine) but says the fish will eat it in about 3 days, implying that you're not meant to take it out again!
  21. South Hort is a local business, near Rolleston so I doubt you can find this sand anywhere else. Daltons Propagating Sand is a popular substrate (which is what I was looking for originally but couldn't find in Chch) but I think it looks slightly different. All hail Hypnotoad.
  22. Ohhh come one, you know you want the alligator head!
  23. Nope, it's South Hort Propagating Sand, so the finer gravely stuff comes premixed in with that.
  24. DIY mixture, running all the time (not shown in any of the photos... no longer running til new diffuser arrives  .) The airstone bubbles in the photos... There was 2 but when I added the Co2, I took one out. The one left in is at the opposite end from Co2. Its mainly there to stop the surface getting a film. It's also running all the time. Ahhh yes, Mr Isosceles. He's awesome. I need to rehome the other 2 'cos they've all started bickering.
