  1. I made the decision yesterday to not go back in to fighter breeding. Heres my advice for crowntail females. Get yourself a good looking female, veiltail is fine. Get yourself a really strong looking male crown tail - good strong forked tail! Spawn them, get rid of all the resulting males - too much rubbish on the market, don't put any more out there. Keep half a dozen of the best females (you will need to wait until they are about 4 months old, often the best finnage are the slowest fish to develop. Cross the top 2 females back to their father. Keep the best half dozen females, ditch the males. This time find another high quality male and put the females to him. Resulting females should come out like this These are second generation females and males Cross once more and you will some nice looking males and females female
  2. You mean white tip on its dorsal fin ? If so its quite normal - http://www.tropicalfishbypost.co.uk/red ... shark.html occasionally on its other fin tips as well
  3. Do you have any updates on your tank? How do you find the lighting and the skimmer on you tank. I was of the understanding that both were lacking on the aqua reefs ie light not strong enough for corals and skimmer not big enough.
  4. I think that yes its mostly males or when females do come in then thats all there are - not often a mix of both sexes. Females don't sell well because they are so plain.
  5. Nice fish and your tank, as always, looks great
  6. Glass are the most reliable and their batteries don't run out
  7. Have you always had these tiger lotus plants or are they new/ Are they pups or adults. I 'trained' my tiger lotus to stay low by constantly pruning every time a leaf shot up and in the end they just stayed down. Perhaps you could try adding fert balls around the roots.
  8. If you purchased them as a breeding pair they should have had fry or do you mean they have had eggs but no fry for you? Females will produce eggs that won't hatch so be certain you have a male and female. They are similar to fighters when it comes to breeding so make sure you have plenty of floating plants in the tank for the eggs to be blown into.
  9. I agree that AqAdvisor is saying that because of the phantom tetras. Once they get bigger your poor fighter won't have a hope in the same tank as them. Tetra are lively, fighters like solitary and peace. Two oto would be fine. Stocking is a lot about the surface area of the tank and the size of the fish.
  10. Lots of eyes - looking very good

hmm interesting, I will have to investigate further.

    Coral rock

Does anyone know anything about this coral rock - seen it, or tried it? http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 259390.htm
  14. Could be. If so its normally caused by the wrong sort of food being fed. Have you checked your tank temperature?
  15. Two responses so far from two experienced overseas breeders I've never had/seen an albino Betta before . I don't know. From your description, it sounds like he might be blind and just sees shadows? and Anecdotal notes on albino bettas does say that many are blind or become blind.
  16. Does anyone know where I can get a chiller checked and serviced in or near Auckland? Don't say google because I have
  17. I have five from the first lot in to the country - all the ones that have come in have been males. They are flourescent orange and around the 9cm mark. Mine fight constantly with one now having a permanently damaged pop eye. They are not the only rainbows I have so the tank is pretty active. I am thinking of selling up all my tropicals and tanks etc so if I do I will give you a yell.
  18. Sounds to me like you have done all you can
  19. Nice to see someone else with Parkinsonii that are well coloured. I was beginning to think I was the only one with adults.
  20. They can live 10 -15 years, maybe longer in optimum (perfect) conditions.

    Chillers

so if you have chillers and you are in chch I assume you have a heater as well? If so, how do you set the two up? Heater to say 25 degrees and chiller to come on at 27?
