  1. There are definite benefits to being in a club, even if you don't get to many meetings. While its nice to be able to chat online and share ideas, actually talking person to person and looking at tanks rather than pictures is imo much much better. The more members a club has, the wider the variety of experiences and ages and it all makes it fun.
  2. I have often wondered about this so am really interested in what you find out Sophia. I was wandering through Otara markets yesterday and the thought about hygiene and licences came up again.
  3. :f77: , its Auckland Fishkeepers end of year get together and BBQ at my house today, Mt St John Ave, Epsom. PM myself or get hold of LIam if you don't know the exact number or where my house is. Starting around 1pm. Bring meat and drinks. Seeing as I am nice and central no one has to travel extreme distances to be there. See you this afternoon!
  4. Smidey that makes absolute sense. Thanks. I was thinking mostly about not enough flow to clear the waste from around the tank. I run cf1200s on my 1200 x 300 x 300 tanks which are only just over 100l each. I think you are going to need that second filter
  5. This is just my opinion but I can not see the point in having the intake and outlet in the same corner of the tank unless the flow rate is sufficient to move the water going in the tank to the far end of it and back, providing circulation throughout the tank. To me it seems that a lot of the 'clean' water will end up going straight back up the intake. What is the reason for having them in the same corner (just wondering)?
  6. At the other end or preferably put the outlets in the middle and the intakes at opposite ends - best to get maximum circulation
  7. Its to do with the new website so once that goes live the problem will cease.
  8. I have the same style tank as you and an FX5, you can put the plastic at various angles and then run the hose off it. It does;'t have to be clipped on the whole way. Depending on where you are you can come have a look at what I mean.
  9. Thanks Phantom - I figured it was to do with the new site works and I am prepared to be patient cos this is going to be amazing!
  10. Xingu - river in Brazil and home to many beautiful plecs
  11. no its not just you, I have been getting it on and off for weeks now. Longest time it took to go away was about 10 mins.
  12. If a group of you are interested in re starting the club - it is not closed, it is in recess - then by all means get together and talk about it. I am happy, as will the FNZAS President, to guide you through it. The funds are being held by the Federation should the club re-start.
  13. Yes, they come into HFF occasionally.
  14. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... catid=4827 Have read of the link. Its available from lfs and costs over $30 per packet of capsules. You need to dose as instructed, Pros are that it is a pretty effective cure. Cons are 1.. it can kill off some filter bacteria 2. it is proven as a carcinogen so care is required.
  15. What are your tank readings? Chances are the dead fish has 1. created an ammonia spike 2. left bacteria in the water. Keep doing daily water changes. Wonder tonic will do little if the pop eye has been caused by bacteria in the water. You will need to dose furan to get rid of the nasties. If you don't want to use furan aim to keep your water as clean as possible and hope for the best.
  16. :sml1: I think it looks a lot better than a lot of pics I have seen of swallow tails
  17. that doesn't work because they come back
  18. The back one is a female, can't be sure with the front one.
  19. Its impossible to give you a value as it all depends on your location and the supply/demand curve. You might have to give it away or you might end up getting between $20 - $30 or if a couple of people want it you may even get slightly more.
  20. Do you have any other sort of thermometer in the tank to verify the tank temperature? Its not essential but if you are worried I recommend you get a thermometer. The most reliable is the glass thermometer that is stuck inside the tank - its about $7 from memory.
  21. Kudos to Living Reef in Christchurch. I went in there this morning with a mass of questions. The gentleman could not have been more helpful. Thanks so much
  22. We can only get the things there is enough demand for to make it worth bringing in to the country. Why can you not purchase alternate ones which are available in NZ.
  23. Agree with Monique on the tail - thats the only thing leading me to think male as well. Where are you located?
  24. I can't confirm the sex by the photos you have taken but if you look between the ventrals and there is a white dot then the fish is a female. It looks as if, particularly in the first photo, there is a white dot. This is known as the ovipositor or egg spot. Your fish is not a half moon. A half moon has a tail that is shaped like D (a D). I suspect that if the seller said a parent was a longtailed half moon then they are not very experienced. A half moon has a long tail. A long tail is a different tail type than a half moon which may sound confusing. Did they say what the other parent was? I would think by looking at the fish it is possibly a half moon,/long tail (previously known as veiltail) cross or a delta tail/long tail cross or even a halfmoon plakat/longtail cross. Ventrals in fighters can vary considerably in length. It does have very nice colouring
  25. I use rock, tonic, or sea salt. Sea salt and rock salt I get from supermarket. Tonic from HFF Why don't you get hold of some 25 litre containers and go down to the sea and fill them up.
