  1. Five weeks on and the tanks looking good. The CO2 diffuser arrived on Friday and yesterday - Saturday I managed to break it! Another one is on its way but will take a couple of weeks so will have to rig it up through the fx5 again tomorrow when I have the time. Heres pics taken on Friday evening
  2. If its any help I find that the more often I feed bloodworms the more incidences of dropsy I get in my tanks. No bloodworms - no dropsy, bloodworms 1x per week (about 4 bloodworms each) - no dropsy, bloodworms 2x per week and the dropsy starts.
  3. Supasi - when you say 'wolfia' is this what you are referring to? 'Miniature Duck Weed (Wolfia sp.) Filamentous Green Algae'. Thanks
  4. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with those pics Firefish. They are lovely little fish.
  5. keep a careful eye on him in case it is finrot. You will know if it is because you will see bits of the tail and fins on the bottom of the tank. If its just been nipped clean water will heal it.
  6. Not in my tank it doesn't
  7. 50 litres of water per discus minimum. Temp 28-30 degrees celcius. Minimum of 4 to spread the aggression but I'd recommend at least 6. Frequent water changes, I'd recommend a minimum of two a week. For beginners its better to get them at at least 8cm in size. The smaller the more water changes, anything from 100% water change daily, and also they are more susceptible to disease etc. Good quality food. Bare bottom tank is easier to raise the smaller ones, older ones are fine in a planted tank. I'd recommend a first aid kit for fish of harder to get meds as well. As dennisawesome says keep an eye on them, make sure they all get enough food. IME if one is being excessively picked on and decides to go off and sulk and not eat, its very very hard, if not impossible to get them to start again.
  8. Flourish excel squirted directly onto it will kill it (use a syringe) and if just put into the tank daily will partly control it. It depends how much of a woolly look you like in your tank as to whether you worry about it or not. The amount of excel you can use will be more determined by the fish you have in the tank than by the algae as some fish are more sensitive to it than others. Snails IMO need to be picked out.
  9.   rofl rofl... ... .....
  10. Are you sure you don't have two pairs of discus in there or two females?
  11. ah ha! He knows that once you get going you will be hooked!
  12. I'm sure his memory will 'improve' if you give him a hand with the things he has to do so he will have some spare time to take you
  13. Given that we are in Auckland I do believe an oil fin will do. I used one in the shed last year and it is a de longhi, type BNM 2.0 - you've seen the shed so you know how big approximately it is. It kept the room warm enough and that was with all the bikes going in and out as well.
  14. He's not being chased is he? I can't image why a fish would do it twice although I do believe their memory is about 3 seconds.
  15. Do you happen to have taken a photo of them like this? If so would you please either post one on here or email me one? Thanks
  16. I can't answer it because I don't know I only feed small amounts and they are gobbled up before they have a chance to die.

Keep up with regular water changes as somewhere about the two week mark you may get an ammonia spike which can kill off some of your fish. This is as the tank cycles. Quarrantine tanks - anywhere from 4-6 weeks is the best. Its up to you really but sometimes things take a while to show themselves.
  18. Discus fry will feed off the 'milk' on their parents sides. They will eat hatched brine shrimp because the movement of the live shrimp attracts them. Both live baby brine shrimp and decapsulated brine shrimp will pollute the water if left and therefore the water changes need to be daily and total when the discus are young if you want the best growth rates and health from your young fish. Decapsulated brine shrimp will not hatch.
  19. fixed my spelling. Hasn't done anything we just want to ID him! Is he you?
  20. Yes we know that LA but who is Charophyte? Obviously it is not I
  21. check your ammonia levels as this can cause them to clamp their tails and even if okay it would pay to do a water change.
  22. They are not surface feeders, more mid - low.
