  1. Welcome to the forum. You might like to add where abouts in the country you are to your profile. To do this go to User Control Panel at the top right of this screen and then once on that page go to profile. Adding your location will help in the long run especially if you have any problems.
  2. perhaps it could stay at fanatical because it is all too true. I like them all but can't decide between 2 & 4. Probably 4 because goldfish aren't my thing although there could be a mix of pics to depict the fact that aquatic societies are not just fish.
  3. yes I am talking bloodworms - there is no proven evidence but what I have seen is enough for me.
  4. I find my siamese fighters grow pretty well in the bottom of my cannister filters
  5. Theres a few of you on the forum now from Howick. You should all find out about joining up with the FNZAS which gives you added benefits to just the forum. Then perhaps a car pool to the Auckland Fishkeepers monthly meeting (or a car pool as far as my place in Epsom and I could take you the rest of the way).
  6. Hope you do manage to get him tomorrow morning. As for $45, I would think it would be a cheap price to pay for your sanity and that of your cats, although I am surprised that they were not willing to take a cat that was probably adding to the problem of unwanted kittens landing on their doorstep. When we first moved to Auckland our young spayed female was harassed by a tom cat to the extent that she stressed out so much, the stress eventually killed her
  7. I had the 'joy' of babysitting two oscars for a couple of months last year and the only thing they were interested in eating were small fish. You might need to find yourself a few of those. They went for the movement. Dried food - no way!
  8. Dropsy is caused by organ failure as already said. What causes that is unknown but if it is bacteria then this is most likely the contagious part (as already said as well). My suggestion would be to increase your water changes to daily for a week - ten days which will help keep the tank pristine. The best thing you can do is isolate any fish you suspect of having dropsy over the next week or so - you can float an icecream container in the top of your tank if you have no other way. This way if the fish does have it and dies it is less likely to infect the others. I have found it goes in patches with my fish but I have linked it to a certain food which I feed from time to time. While it is not proven I find if I don't feed it I don't get dropsy which is good enough for me.
  9. Salt - 1 gram per litre of water is a safe effective amount for tanks. However, remember that when you do water changes only replace the amount of salt per litre of water you take out during the water change. Salt doesn't evaporate but water does. i.e. 500 litre tank, 500grams salt. During the week 50 litres evaporates. At water change you take out 100 litres of water. To fill tank up to the original level you add 150 litres water but only add 100 grams of salt.
  10. I'm not surprised Tasman have gained members. The membership is very cheap compared to any other clubs I know of and you get a good deal in return as well as meeting other fishkeepers. Good on you for being proactive and taking yourselves out to meet the general public.

  20.  P44 might have some unwanted visitors if they think he's growing something illegal! (and yes Sam, I do know that is not what you meant).
  21. I wondered about it too but I don't know if I've got the time to 'tart' the tank up enough. Then again if I do, which tank should I enter?
  22. As David said, she is absolutely fine
