  1. What about using a pair of long handled tweezers like the plant tweezers you can buy. The other option is to not feed for a couple of days, if they are hungry they will eat.
  2. We had to put our 11 year old Golden Retriever down yesterday. A very sudden and unexpected event. She is deeply missed by our family.
  3. I've got one and it works really well - very quiet too. I also had fun setting it up
  4. Oh blow!! I am forever hopeful that something amazing and unknown to be in NZ will pop up and I will be the first to it!!
  5. http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/fish/fish/tropical-fish/auction-437197519.htm Any idea as to what this is - Its certainly not a King Tiger and to me just looks like a common plec. A search of planet catfish under Trinidad brings up a plec that looks very unlike the posted pic.
  6. There was one like the one in Caryls link that was reported as escaped in yesterdays NZ Herald. It appears they have quite a reputation as uncontrollable beasts.
  7. Sounds from the first piece below that the issue is mostly that you can only keep one per aquarium whereas you need two to breed however I suppose it would be possible if 1. the tank was large enough 2. there were numerous hiding places/barriers to break up the view. It also appears that sexing is not easy. Maybe if you purchased them young and grew them up together? Another report I read said that if you have more than one you are better to have 3-4. Breeding the Red tail shark in aquariums can be hard, and the Red tail sharks in fish stores have therefore usually been imported from Thailand. In Thailand, large amounts of Red tail sharks are produced in fish farms each year. Only occasional reports of Red tail shark spawnings in aquariums exist. One of the problems that must be overcome if you want to breed Red tail sharks is the fact that they are very aggressive. Keeping more than one Red tail shark in the same aquarium will usually result in a lot of violence, and this is naturally a problem if you intend to breed them. Sexing is also difficult. Females may have a less pointed dorsal fin. also found this Reports of hobbyist breeding Epalzeorhynchus Bicolor are very rare. What I have found is that a large well planted tank with a ratio of more females to males is needed. The females are more robust and rounded than the males. A spawning tube will appear weeks before spawning and the male fertilizes the eggs in jerky thrusting motions as the eggs are scattered. It is said that the eggs hatch in a couple of days and the fry are easy to raise. Most breeding is done in open ponds in their native Thailand and exported around the world.
  8. well its not the culprit in my case because I do not have it
  9. :rotf: If she's there she's probably still waiting in a queue to have her details recorded!!
  10. I can go months without getting a reaction therefore I have never tried to isolate the cause It takes several days for my rash to disappear and then it will return but not as badly the next couple of times I clean the tanks out, then disappears altogether, just to return when I am not expecting it. Good luck with finding the cause but I have the feeling you will get no definite result for all your efforts today.
  11. Happy New Year to one and all! For those of you who had a rugged 2011, may this year be 1000 times better.
  12. whats the proper name for them?
  13. This thread has me seriously confused as to what exactly you are asking. what is actually stopping you from putting the glass back on -is it the fact that you have taken the strips off or that the light is now using up the space on the edges where the strips were? Looking at the type of light fitting I would think it is the second. Yes, a photo of the tank with the light would help
  14. I also get in and only ever on the arm that is in the tank. I get a major rash which takes several days to go down if I have my arm in the tank for hours (when doing all my tanks in a single day) and to a lesser degree if only in the tank for an hour or so. I put it down to either rubbing my arm on the edge of the glass but have wondered about bloodworms but think its more likely to long expose to water and not drying it off properly in between times. I find if I wash up properly at the end using soap and dry my arm well it seems to help.
  15. ooooooh lucky you - 10th birthday parties are fun!! My son has a new job and is leaving Auckland on 14 January to live and work in Ashburton. He will be teaching at Ashburton College.
  16. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone! Enjoy your holidays and time with family and friends but most of all stay safe. To my fellow executive thank you for your support this year. You are a fantastic group of people to work with.
  17. We were using Johannesburg as the hub to get to the Victoria falls and the way the flights fell it left us with a couple of days. However Malaysia Air is no longer flying direct from Kuala Lumpar to Johannesburg so now we have to fly from KL - Bangkok - Nairobi - Johannesburg - Victoria falls. We will see only the inside of the airport for a few hours! Oh, and nothing will put us off. We've paid for all our flights, gorilla permits and our land travel deposit so we are going. First vaccination was yesterday - tetanus booster - with our yellow fever and typhoid in a couple of weeks. Still not decided on rabies vaccination but we will be getting the influenza vaccination and drinking the horrible cholera drink, plus getting 5 weeks of anti malaria tabs before we leave. All other required vaccinations we have already had and they are for life.
  18. The whole cull/anaethetise issue is something that anyone intending to breed fish needs to think about before they start. In my line of siamese fighter breeding, I can and have ended up, many times, with over 300 fry at 1-2cm (at this size they are going to survive), predominately males - therefore its something that I most certainly have to face. Not only is it when the spawns are too large but anything not good quality or pure breeds need to be removed or at the least not passed on to others for breeding. Too often I see ''rubbish'' out on offer.

  20. Re chicken pox - as with most immunisations around10% will not become immune after the vaccine is given. Vaccinate a second time and around 10% of the first 10% who by now, have been vaccinated twice, will still not develop immunity. Good luck with your children, hopefully they are in the 90%.
  21. Well done Caryl. You must be proud of your efforts!
  22. Adrienne

    hi all!

Welcome - may your time here be enjoyable.
  23. Zurio - I think that perhaps you were not party to the original thread before Jaxxnz purchased the plant. He/she was told then that it was a plant that was illegally brought into the country but still went ahead and purchased it. He/she made the statement on this forum that they were going to do so. As a FNZAS member I can not be seen to condone this activity therefore I am obligated to say so. Obviously - as in my previous post - its like banging ones head against a brick wall.
