  1. Our christmas dinner (which I am doing this year) will be Roast Turkey, Sausagemeat stuffing, new potatoes, carrots and fresh peas which will be shelled in the morning. A Christmas ham will also be on offer but as one of the family is celiac it will not be glazed. Our concession to the fact that Christmas Day up in Auckland is often humid is that salads (3 types) will replace the traditional roast vegetables (potatoes, pumpkin, parsnip and onions). Gravy will be on offer as will cranberry jelly. Deserts will be pavlova, fresh fruit salad, christmas pudding with sixpences in it and custard. Due to popular demand there will also be a family favourite which has come down through the generations, chocolate chip desert which is chocolate chip biscuits soaked in sherry and layered together with cream. This will replace a trifle. Drinks - wine, sparkling grape juice and fizzy. On the table, candles and crackers.
  2. I agree absolutely with you on this one.
  3. Either a male plakat or a hermaphrodite. I had a female who was a hermaphrodite - she built a bubble nest, dropped her eggs, put them in the nest and then tended them for three days before eating them. It was a good big bubble nest as well
  4. thanks Phoenix! I ran it without the diffuser and no issues so soaked it in bleach and as soon as I started it off again the bubble counted popped apart. I am going to purchase a glass one. Just checking as its a little hard to tell but yours is inside the tank? I will also have to get a new diffuser I suspect.

    Altos :)

Good on you Ryan. One day I'm coming out for a look.
  6. I would because the parents will defend their new eggs and may well attack the older batch.
  7. okay - I did do a run before putting the diffuser on but did not have the airline right down into the tank and it seemed okay.
  8. I have a pressurised CO2 setup with a solenoid on a timer and a plastic bubble counter and a glass diffuser. It used to work perfectly but now the plastic bubble counter keeps popping apart spilling the small amount of water in it. Its a new bubble counter as I thought the old one was faulty because the same thing was happening. Could it be my diffuser - is it possible its blocked. I would love some of you to post pics of the way your CO2 is setup. Any suggestions
  9. Not sure what you mean by ''what do I do". You obviously wanted to breed them or you would not have purchased a pair therefore I assume you planned at the time of purchase and have some spare tanks so you can grow the young on.
  10. I also wondered about the colours and think that perhaps the lighting being used along with tanins in the tank may have something to do with the bright colouring.
  11. I have about 16 ember tetra in my tank. They started off pale orange but are now about this colour. They look great and I am going to add to the school.
  12. yes it does need a clean and the stand will come up really well if you brush it down with either a wire brush or wire wool and then spray it with enamel black spray paint. Its amazing how good they can look. IMO the filter will be struggling so if you have another filter, even an internal would help. You are best to aim for a filter to provide a minimum turnover of 4 x the volume of water per hour although a lot of us tend to go for 10 x the volume per hour.
  13. Congrats - please tell me you are an FNZAS member and can register your breedings !!
  14. My tank was crawling with MTS as in the whole surface of the substrate had a roll on and moved constantly. It took very little time for the clown loaches to eat every single one of them.
  15. Looks good - do you have some bracing half way up across the back like you do on the sides? Stain it and then finish off with a layer of varnish imo. I love the look of wood tanks stands. I have one that always looks good and Jennifer has a couple of stunning wooden tank stands and hoods.
  16. yuss - they went while I was down in ChCh at the Exec meeting. However I had to ask where it was as it was buried under a pile of rubble on the dining room table. Nearly had to phone and ask you to come visit me
  17. I agree - a really good read. A good selection of articles. It makes belonging to the FNZAS more than worthwhile and thats apart from what you gain belonging to a club.
  18. sounds much better and much safer and from a landlords point of view the house will be drier and no chance of rotting carpets due to floods
  19. there's no one at home to run out to my mailbox and check for me
  20. Hmmmmmmmmm.......... Now who am I going to pay to run back and forwards checking the mailbox for me :gigl:
  21. Keeping them keen and separated like that obviously broke their hearts :tears:
