  1. Very sorry to hear. My neighbour lost their German Shepherd to the same condition.
  2. None of these tips seem over the top to me. Seven years ago my family including my children, then 16, 13 & 11 years spend 5 1/2 weeks travelling in India. We had a minivan with a drive and a security guard, who when we stopped anywhere got out and stood at the back of the van to make sure no one nicked off with the luggage. We learnt very quickly to keep our windows up. In Africa we will be on our own some of the time so I appreciate all advice.
  3. No fish will survive in a tank with puffers. Puffers seem to become very hungry during the night and any sleeping fish is a great meal!! Is the algae you have a slimy blue/green colour that is in fine layers?
  4. :sml1: but I get to watch you all work while I sit down with paper and pen :rotf:
  5. . I suppose that depends on whether or not you really care for the future of fish keeping in this country. I am one of a small number of, not necessarily forum members but, fully paid up FNZAS members who are working really hard to foster good working relationships with MAF, BioSecurity NZ and other organisations which can only serve to advance the hobby in NZ. My greatest concern is that Jaaxnz is still laughing at the fact that he/she was caught and now you obviously do not think the issue is at all serious, but the more people who flout the rules and bring in or purchase fish or plants illegally and then spread them around or release them into the wild, the greater the number of restrictions that will be put in place. The simple fact of the matter is - if you know it is endangered or not allowed - do not touch it but report it to the authorities.
  6. I do hope so and I do hope that by the time we have walked in to find them that they have cups of tea waiting!
  7. Hubby picked me up 4 packets of tennis biscuits at the supermarket tonight so will take 2 with me tomorrow.
  8. with Caryl that comes naturally
  9. I would say shortbread may be the closest.
  10. where is 'here'. Someone may be able to help.
  11. All I can say is that you deserved the visit. You purchased it knowing that it was illegal, your comments on another thread state that. You are lucky if all that happened was that they seized the plant. Let it be a warning to you and anyone else tempted to buy something that is illegally imported that you will be caught!!
  12. I do hope you are not considering setting it up where you live!! :-? 14. I have no experience with oranda or coldwater fish but if it is not bacterial, salt and keeping the water pristine will do the job. If bacterial and it is fin rot you will see fine red vein like lines form above where the fins/tail end. This is where the next lot of fins/tail will fall off to and the red vein like lines will form and it will continue on and on until nothing is left. I would try the salt first and if it deteriorates further then you will need to use something stronger.
  15. Next April hubby and I are heading overseas - going via Johannesburg, Sth Africa to the Victoria falls in Zimbabwe, then on to Kenya to visit/work in an orphanage and visit our sponsored children, Zanzibar, Tanzania for a safari, Uganda to visit the silverbacks (gorillas), then via London to Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France before flying home from Barcelona, Spain. We have travelled in third world countries before, having spent a reasonable amount of time in both India and Thailand but I am wondering if any of you have some travel tips for Africa apart from the usual ie get your vaccinations done, organise travel insurance. We have already travelled in Europe but are hoping, finances permitting to purchase a BMW motorcycle in London and take it through Europe before shipping it back to NZ. All suggestions welcomed
  16. I'm pretty sure I can get them here, shall I bring some to Hamilton with me?
  17. Thanks - sometimes google doesn't know everything. I find that I have success with my sterbai breeding in my biggish planted tank when there is a lot of leaf cover and I can't vacuum really well. Its the only chance the small fry have.
  18. What are stella cory? I googled it but nothing showed.
  19. I would love to assist but having had a total hip replacement 8 weeks ago I am not agile enough to be trying to take decent pics of fish as am still on one crutch.
  20. If you want to come and see if I have any females that you could use let me know.
  21. I have a tank with giants - both male and female in it plus some ct females and the odd halfmoon and possibly dragons. Giants are not that easy to breed from with an approximately 30% chance of getting a male to spawn. The fry take more time and care to raise to full potential as well. The giants that have come in have all been males and they are all plakats.
  22. where are they coming from that its going to take 48 hours?
  23. yum grape juice you buy from the supermarkets
