Thought you might like my response which will most probably not be shown - My question was a genuine one as I was (note was) interested in the plec photographed but I was not interested in purchasing a bristlenose. My research is pretty thorough - http://www.planetcatfish.com By the way, I have access to many many highly knowledgeable fish keepers, in particular plec keepers, who happily answer my questions without being rude. Cheers guys, thanks for your help.

Me? Not currently but I am trying to sort out what I will do when I return from overseas in July. I do want to purchase a big plec though for my 5 ft tank. Things are prettty unsettled here atm with an impending house shift somewhere in the next twelve months, very possibly sooner. If I restart my tanks in the shed up I am thinking of species tanks with a large variety of species but I do not want to do that only to have to shift them all when we move.
  5. Looks really nice. Unfortunately I think you will find that the bba begins to spread. I find the best way to get rid of it is by squirting it directly with excel from a syringe. In a couple to three days it turns rusty red and dies.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/fish/fish/tropical-fish/auction-447449269.htm what type is this please?
  7. try testing it again later this evening and again tomorrow morning and see if it changes - I am still thinking that the tank was doing a mini or minor cycle but ime if ammonia is going to spike it tends to do so more in the evenings. Hopefully the tank is stabilising.
  8. Fishy-fish - I am going to politely request that you edit your post to take out the p word in your first sentence. As preparations for a court case are now in progress, discussing what may or may not have happened on a public forum is not what should be happening.
  9. Yes I know who Mark is. However, if he does not want it known in the newspaper article then it would be wrong for myself or anyone else for that matter placing it on this forum. His only involvement in this case is as a person contracted to create and maintain the aquarium. Good on him for continuing to care for the fish even though he is unlikely to be paid.
  10. The questions you are asking are impossible to give a totally accurate answer to so here is my experience with kribs (please note - I only had one pair of kribs and this example is of three spawnings of the same pair ) - The first time both parents raised them. It was at about 2 weeks that they started to be allowed to move away from the adults, without the adults bringing them back. The parents both raised them and remained with their fry until they were big enough to sell on. The second time I spawned them, once they became free swimming the female nearly beat the male to death and I had to remove him for his own safety. Once the fry were about 1cm I placed them into their own tank and returned the male. They spawned immediately. Third time, the female bullied the male so I removed them. She then proceeded to eat all the fry herself. A couple of days later I returned him and about 2 days after that they spawned again. I think there is no hard and fast rule. Suggestions - Observe the adults carefully and also the number of fry with them. If one of the adults is being bullied or is away from the fry (hiding) remove it. One adult can raise them alone as long as they are not in a community tank. If the number of fry is decreasing consider siphoning them out and placing in their own tank to raise. Brine shrimp (hatched), microworms is good starter food. Decap brine shrimp, novotom and daphnia as they start to grow. Finely crushed pellets or flake eventually leading to normal sized flake/pellets. Bloodworms. As with all fry, be careful not to overfeed and pollute your tank.
  11. I have been instructed to dose 1tsp each 200 litre water change.
  12. Washing the sponges in what - tank water or tap water? My tank pH sits low - maximum 6 (my test chart does not go lower than that) and the one thing guaranteed to cause my tank to recycle is if I wash out more than 2 of my fx5's sponges under tap water. I have no issues when I wash out the media but I will get high ammonia if I wash my sponge's in that way. I find if I only wash out the sponges on only 1 or 2 of the 3 filter baskets with a hose I can manage it, so these days I tend to put the tank water into a bucket and wash them.
  13. Sorry, I can not get over there to pick it up after work and then to the courier before they close.
  14. Discus are sensitive to flourish excel but in saying that I dose every day without issues. If you mix the excel in water before adding it, it will help as ime the discus seem to like to swim directly through where the excel has just been poured. The best way to kill off the bba is to get hold of a syringe and squirt the excel directly on to it. You will notice it turning red within a couple of days and ime once it starts to die off the other bba in the tank seems to reduce. Work your way around the tank.

All I can say is - I wish the bn I have ever had looked like that in colour.

top one I do not think it is a bn - bottom no idea - not very helpful sorry.
  17. I may regret this but where exactly, as in the street name and suburb, is the fish?
  18. I think it is very unlikely that, given she had a passenger even if it was a grandchild, that she will deny she was at fault unless she never admitted she was. Insurance companies generally have their own repairers, I think you will find they can match your colour.
  19. Thank you all for the birthday wishes.
  20. After 30 years of fishkeeping I am yet to make the move to marine although I have been considering it, moreso of late. The one big thing I have learnt from reading this forum is to go slowly when setting up a marine tank. Other tips I have read are to be patient and purchase decent quality equipment. I have gotten the impression that if you can't afford decent quality equipment then you possibly will not be able to afford to run a marine set up. You will find all the salties on this fishroom helpful and willing to answer any questions you have but remember that they may not all do everything the same way, yet still get a good result.
  21. :rotf: :sml1: and that is the wisdom that comes with age, is it LA? :sml1:
  22. HFF Mt Roskill has turtles and axylotyl & frogs. Bird Barn has lizards and I think Animates does too. Howver you really will require a vehicle to get to any of them.
  23. I used the seach function on this site and this came up http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=45064&p=489667&hilit=gold+honey+dwarf+gourami#p489667 so it must be possible
  24. Well no sign on door, no working phone and the website is only working on the first page. Hopefully they will let us know if they have moved. The whole road front around them is being dug up but the one shop that is still operational does have access to it - Aqua Village does not. The workmen have not seen anyone in the shop.
