  1. My youngest finished last Thursday forever with only exams to go and announced today that she thought we would not bother to sit her scholarship exam
  2. Reef, in order to get anywhere in life, one needs to earn respect and trust. It is not a given thing. As a small fish within a much larger group the Fish Sub Committee & FNZAS are working hard to establish both and this is a huge step. As Jennifer pointed out ''we are not at liberty to discuss the project". Therefore that is all that can currently be said on the topic (saying more would lose us respect and trust and prevent any further progress being made). Would you please stop your continued needling of both the FNZAS and the Fish Sub Committee. Thank you. Adrienne Fish Sub Committee Vice Chair
  3. OOOHHH - thats a bit harsh. You are only authorised to say that when you have been married as long as they have
  4. The biggest issue with getting different betta (already on the list) into the country is the limited market and the number of people willing to pay the cost. The market needs to be there.
  5. As stakeholders for the hobby, the FNZAS Fish Sub-committee last week attended a meeting with MAF in Wellington. We are not at liberty to publicly discuss the project, or the plans with them in future. It is my hope that when the project is complete, or at some point in the near future, we can write up some of our results in the AW magazine for all members to see. The four species on the import list are listed below. Apart from Betta Splendens of which we do get a variety of tail types the only other one I have seen in the country in the last 4-5 years is the Betta Coccina. Betta coccina Betta imbellis Betta pugnax Betta splendens
  6. HFF can have them made for you at what I consider is a fair price for a good quality level stand.
  7. Another water change today. The hair algae seems to have gone away and the bba on the wood has turned this colour as a result of my squirting flourish excel directly on to it with a syringe on Monday. I find this method works well in the worst affected areas however it is a slow process.
  8. Yes it could have been. The primary reason for the CO2 being turned off is that the bits keep coming apart as in the pressure keeps blowing the plastic drop checker open. I can't get down to put it back together and until I can work out why it started happening theres no point in making a massive effort just for it to happen again and again.
  9. Take the ferry over to Rangitoto - theres lots of wood like this over there or was. The ferry crew don't mind you bringing some back to Aucks.
  10. Coming down your way in a few days
  11. Jazzyjeff - yes, half a teaspoon. It won't harm the fish and if you don't see improved growth with your plants then I would stop it. It has helped with mine.
  12. I use the epsom salts because it was recommended to me - it is magnesium sulphate and it has improved my plants health a lot. 1 tsp per 200 litres when doing a water change. I normally change 50% of my tank each time.
  13. Over the past 8-10 weeks my 5ft, 450 litre planted tank has suffered from irregular water changes, pruning and a lack of fertilisers causing most known types of algae to develop and detritis to lie on the bottom of the tank and float on the surface. After having a total hip replacement nearly 2 weeks ago I am now in a position to be able to begin to tidy it up, albeit slowly as I am still on crutches for another month and have limited reach and mobility. I thought I would post some before and after photos of my tank to show it can be done and that in most cases outbreaks of algae can be treated without the need to throw out your plants and start again. I will add to this thread as the algae reduces and the plants return to a better state of health. Before the magnetic cleaner was used on the front and side glass of the tank - After the glass cleaning and pick up of loose plant detritis off the bottom and surface of the tank (please note the amount of algae remaining on the wood, plants, filter and heaters. The CO2 diffuser is still on the bottom of the tank as I am as yet unable to reach this. The CO2 has not been running for a couple of months. and some of my fish in the tank with obvious algae in the back ground. I have started dosing flourish excel daily, flourish comprehensive every 2 days and epsom salts each water change - water changes will be increased from every 7-8 days to hopefully every 3-4 days depending on my husbands availability to assist me.
  14. There will be a number waking up with sore heads this morning. I not one of them There were fireworks going off around here for hours last night - obviously people had stashed them away from last years Guy Fawkes. We could see the professional display going off from our house as well last.
  15. In my tank I find most of the swords take quite a long time to grow - when they get too big I give them away and start again.
  16. IME Indian Almond leaves do take quite a while to turn the water brown. Are you sure this is what they really were? I do hope you have found the cause, not that its going to bring your clown loaches back, but it may prevent more deaths.
  17. It's so good to see some of the ChCh fish keepers starting off again - I've noticed a few threads and comments lately in this forum. Wishing you better luck this time round.
  18. I won't be leaving the house at all anyway (on crutches for another 4 or so weeks) Who would want to be on the roads tonight either way - in fact who wants to be on the roads up here at the best of times.
  19. Agreed that MAF will most certainly get on to it and sooner than you think. A word of caution for those talking about obtaining one. By making this sort of statement in a public forum open to scrutiny by all and sundry just be aware that you may also receive a visit from MAF and rightly so. Even if the seller was not aware that this was not allowed in the country (if it is what it is claimed to be), you now are and whether making a statement about obtaining such is done in jest or seriously it is not something that you should be considering.
  20. I'm thinking something like NZ 15, France 12. I think its going to be a serious battle, that the French are going to step right up as we know they can and that the off ball play is going to be dirty.
  21. Could be parasite (internal) or poisoning of some sort. To me it seems like paralysis. I've googled a few sites but nothing similar has come up.
  22. Henward, what is IAL? Do you share nets or implements between the tanks? If IAL is Indian Almond Leaves could it be the way they have been treated to allow them into the country that the fish have reacted to. Have you thought of doing an autopsy on one of the dead loaches. I am sorry to hear of this as I know how much you love the big schools of them you have.
  23. that surprises me - how big are your discus. I have discus in a 450 litre tank and run an fx5 on it. The discus happily swim in the tank with no issues and often I run a 6000lph power head in there as well to flush the tank. The discus also have no issues with this.
