  1. What a rubbish programme Got to give it to the yanks, they can take a twenty minute programe and replay and preview it so much it stretches out to an hour long programe. What a waste of good tv time
  2. Got spare batt for torch and charging the spotlight as I type. Dammit Ive lost one of my nets, but found some more cookie time buckets, hehe. Looking forward to it, so Stella, dont uncross your fingers. Have you been for a looksie to see the state of the local streams yet? Spoke to a guy that drove up from Wellys and he said the rivers looked a bit murky, but then who's he to judge
  3. Another mission for us then Stella.
  4. The lamprey spends most of its life in the sea, where it uses a circular sucker (below) to attach itself to other animals and feeds by rasping a hole in their flesh. The adults, which are over 400 mm long, spawn in fresh water, and thus we find them in our waterways. The adults do not feed while in fresh water, however, and so are not parasitic on other freshwater fish Extract from http://www.niwa.cri.nz/rc/freshwater/fi ... es/lamprey As stated above, they do not feed while spawning so would be hard to keep in an aquarium.Although says that young live in fresh water for up to four years so may be possible. Would love to see one with my own eyes as have heard lots of local Maoris talking about eating them but I have never ever seen one myself. Very interesting animal though.

    LIGHTS

You can buy them at KMart or bunnings for about $5 bucks each. As th others said, 6000k is about right for plants. HTH

  9. Im in. She just said, Im workin so do what you like.Hehe
  10. Looking great Romeo. All I needs now is a Koura.Hehe
  11. Awesome pics Stella. Cant decide which one I like best. Mudfish looks very Mysterious Redfin looks clown like Torrent fish just looks cool
  12. Bet its not as good as my hunting spotlight, hehe Although it drains the batt pretty fast, bout 40 mins continuous use. I would be real keen to come out with you when you go Stella. So long as it not a weeknight as Id have to travel to Palmy first then back. Just need this damn rain to go away.
  13. I have golden pencils and they go nuts over live foods, like daphnia mossie larvae etc. One would assume rockets are the same.
  14. For me its pretty much.. Whiteworms, earthworms, microworms, Daphnia, peas, Dewinged flies. During summertime lots of mozzie larvae and even more daphnia(as more plentiful) Also feed colourbits and general flake.
  15. Recieved mine today thanks Caryl. Now I really must become a member of some club or something.
  16. Of course i do. There are more tanks in my house than what Ive seen at one of our local pet shops, lol I do have another female that i will try him with. Am going to seperate them and try again with this one first as i prefer her colours. Thanks
  17. Most fluoro lights use little power compared to an incandesant bulb. the size your looking at would be no more than 20 watts(cheaper than boiling the jug a couple of times a day anyway) Im always on the look out for lighting for myself, but Im a plant nut so only look for lighting strong enough for growing with, but for a koura tank you could get away with anything really. Go to a shop like Lighting Direct or something and see what they got. Those halogen desklamps are about 14 watts I think, again cheap to run and quite compact with telescopic height adjustment.
  18. Welcome Stella told us you were a lurker, lol Glad you finally decided to join. Show us some of your newts, go on
  19. Thats just the Gas our power was $160.00 last month and I was away in hospital for most of the month so Id hate to see what it would have been if i was at home.
  20. Koura dont need a light, you do,lol Yeah should be fine. Have a look at some of your local shops as you may be able to pick up one withou the risk of shipping. I got a light identical to the one you were after on that other place for about $50.00 new from a pet store in Nelson. Because koura are nocturnal you will find that if the light is to bright they will hide all the time.Could always get a couple of those small halogen desk lamps from the warehouse for $20.00each. Cos you wont be growing plants it wont matter what spectrum the light is.
  21. Not totally sure myself, but I think you will find that it wont be too much dearer than if you were on mains gas. My house has gas hot water and gas heating (gas hobs dont really use that much gas as they arent really on for long) and we have two or three showers per day and lately the heater has been on for at least 6-7 hours per day and our gas bill was just over $100 last month. What youll save in line charges will prob be used toward bottle exchange. HTH
  22. Damn, stella your too fast for me.lol I had another look at the map and I think its the stream that goes under jollies pass road. May have changed now though, but worth a looksie
  23. Umm I had a look, but not really sure, it was about 15 years ago. But there is heaps of streams in the area. Re transporting them, I personally wouldnt bother with air pump as the water will be sloshing around in the car. All i used was an old 20 litre food grade bucket, the one that things like mayonaise and stuff come in.( I used to work for a wholesaler so was able to aquire a few, cant seem to find any now thou) Put it on the floor behind passanger seat and push seat back. It wont move then
  24. Ok for the record, Im a complete novice when it comes to bettas. Never kept them before so forgive me if it seems like a stupid question. Is it normal for the female to beat up on the male? Had the female in a floating container and the male was flaring and showing off, he built a nest and the female started to show vertical markings. released the female, but now the male is running and hiding and has had a fair bit of his fins nipped. Is this a common occurance? Have since seperated them again
