  1. From memory, that eel is not albino as its eyes are black. The guy who took us on the B.T.S tour said it was caught by a local commercial eeler. Please note i say"from memory" my memory has been known to fail me
  2. I took the missus there on Valantines Day.Even better, She paid. We went on the behind the scenes tour, was pretty cool. Cost $25.00 instead of $14 Got to see all the filtration setups and breeding and rearing tanks out the back, some stuff like giant crabs and toads that arnt on display on general admission. Could have spent the whole arvo there but thought id better take her shopping!
  3. Has anyone seen or used one of these? Would be perfect for my small planted tanks as the take up little room in tank. Has anyone seen these or similar sold in NZ, as shipping more than filter itself http://cgi.ebay.com.au/3-Stage-EXTERNAL ... dZViewItem
  4. Someone beat you too it bout two weeks ago http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/feedin ... 28154.html
  5. well funny that cos i have been wondering the same thing! Thought it was odd that she never reply to me when i asked about things to see and do in hawkes bay.She is normally one of the first to respond to such requests. I hope all is ok.
  6. Crypts are well suited for lower light tanks.they do grow very slowly and will eventually send out runners with smaller plants. they dont like their roots being disturbed. If disturbed Crypts are prone to "melt" where the leaves start to turn to mush and become transparent or brownish. this can also be caused it the plant is exposed to colder temperature. Give it time and the Crypt will usually recover and once the do they usually grow back bigger and faster.even if the crypt has almost gone, the rizome will shoot out new growth so long as the conditions are stable.
  7. With such a small tank you will have problems of temperature. On hot days the temperature will rapidly increase and cool overnight(especially with autumn kicking in), this wont be the best conditions for keeping fish. Just a thought.
  8. You stated that you dont know the names of the plant, Is it possible to get some pics of the plants in question. Or go here http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide.php and see if you can id them. It is possible( very likely, for the uninitiated, lol,) that you have been sold non aquatic plants. These plant will appear to do well at first then start to rot and die because the are not true aquatic plants. HTH The other situation is that mentioned by the others above,Submersed and emersed growth.
  9. there is this great roduct and even better cos its free. you can get it anywhere.................Its called TIME!
  10. Try these Reasonable cheap and last about six months. Under gravel ferts are really needed for heavy root feeders like swords or crypts
  11. How long have you got the lights on per day? I have noticed brown algae can be reduced by extending photo period. Remove any plant matter that is dying(common on newly planted plants)to reduce excess nutrients and keep up the water changes. My newly set up tank is just starting to get some brown algae too. I am sure that as soon as i hook up my co2 it will dissapear as plants suck up the nutrients. I have waited before setting up co2 to allow the plants to settle in and get some root activity going.

    Aquadom

Sydney Casino has two large cylinder marine tanks. The fish in those tanks swim round and round too, in an anticlockwise direction only. It must have something to do with current caused by the filtration. it looks good but the poor fish must get so frustrated at not being able to get anywhere as i watched this large moray eel swim round and round for at least half an hour. who knows how long it was doing it before i started watching and how long it continued after i left to go gamble some more.
  13. When i got mine there were all different sizes. there where also green ones, brown, red and black ones. just a thought, as i caught mine by accident at first.
  14. What about grasshoppers? I caught heaps on sunday by walking throught long grass with a butterfly net in front of me, they literaly hop in.
  15. At a guess i would be thinking that it does not remove amonia directly itself, rather its likely that it works by seeding bacteria colonies therefore enabling the process of amonia reduction. Thats just a guess, Similar to the product stressZyme.
  16. Yeah stella. What a cool idea. Id be very keen but would have to be on a sunday as i work six days a week (damn people want to buy stuff on saturdays, lol) Let me know please
  17. Good to see youve put those plants to good use.lol Looking great. What sort of lighting have you got? once the sag starts to establish itself youll find new plants popping up everywhere. Look forward to seeing up dates. Nothing like watching a planted tank develop, its forever changing.
  18. How long has the tank been running? I find that i always get a round of brown algae on newly setup tanks. after a week or so the tank tends to balance itself out a bit better(nutrient wise) and the brown algae soon disapears. Try increasing the period of lighting and see what happens then. my 2cents worth
  19. Hi people I am taking the other half to Napier for Valentines Day and was wanting to know what fishy places to visit. Obviously there is the National Aquarium, which i will be visiting but what about stores etc???? Cheers in advance

    Pic of my SAE

Great pic! What camera did you use??
  21. , , I found these pics but the article i had had it from scratch, building the tank etc
  22. I did have saved to favourites an article of the tank build including pictures, some of the guys had to go swimming to set up BUT (always a but!) i deleted it a few months ago and now i cant find it. I will keep searching and once found i will post a link
  23. Lemon tetras in my opinion are the best tetras. I kept them with my discus as they easily handle the upper temps hat are required for discuc. the more you have the more impressive they look. I had about 15 in a 200 litre tank with two discus. A sign of good healthy lemons is deep red eyes and they( Body colour) actually turn quite yellow when in large groups with plenty of plant cover. They will even spawn very readily ,especially after feeding live food and giving a large water change slightly cooler than tank temp. Once you get some plants goin it will look good, Black background will bring out the colours of the fish. Also what lighting have you got for the plants?? BTW with that filter, remove the carbon from it and add another piece of filter sponge(lfs where you purchased filter should stock spares) I have one of these in one of my nano planted setups and find them great for the price i paid(approx $18.00) Make sure you post pics of plants once they arrive. Cheers Simon
  24. Looking awesome there.CO2 really does make a differance. I agree with alan about the ozelot sword.
