Dont be to hastey
your better to take your time and get it how you want it(planting that is) before adding water, as once you add water, its very easy to mess it up by removing and replanting plants. This causes aquatic mix to come to surface and tends to help feed algae with nutrients.
Trust me , im speaking from experiance.
thats pretty much what i did when i moved house.
Infact i still have some guppies living in a bucket, lol.
when you replant the stem plants you may find they grow all straggly at first, once the settle they will take off again.
With daltons aquatic mix, make sure you have nearly 2 inches of gravel above if you use pea gravel.
if using propergating sand make sure its at least 1 inch deep.
As once water is added the aquatic mix will cloud the water if disturbed.
when adding water make sure you dont pour it directly onto gravel, use a dish as not to disturb substrate, or you will have cloudy water for a few days.
I use exclusivly aquatic mix and propergating sand so if you have any questions just ask.
there are heaps.
Are you looking for a certain type? ie small, big,

mako, blue, bronze whalers, gw, hammerheads, carpet, spiney dog, gummy, rig,
Actually read this, http://www.teara.govt.nz/EarthSeaAndSky ... ndard/2/en
I use it on all my planted tanks.
Great product in my opinion.
Pretty much impossible to add to an existing tank for the reasons stated above. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/50-lit ... 21056.html
Thats a link to one of my previous posts.
Adodge mentioned she mixed with prop sand. I wouldnt do this , i would layer prop sand on top. the plants send roots down into it.
I aint been having much luck at south beach this year. Heaps of Carpet sharks, 2 rays and heaps kawhai and only 3 snapper.
Today i went to Waitotara beach by mussel rock. awesome day for it.
Wish i took the kayak with me.

I have four friends called Nick.
all the same age and we've all been friends since intermediate.
when the missus rings me wanting to know where i am, my answer is simple, With Nick....... ha ha, its so confusing for everyone else but we know which one we each mean.
BTW my name is not Nick, Its Simon.... Not as common, but everyone makes fun of it....(mutters to myself something about stupid nursery rhymes)
I love fish, but i hate preparing it, ie fileting and cleaning.
In fact i just got home from a day at the beach with a reasonable snapper. yum dinner tomorrow.
Other than snapper and gurnard, everything else i catch goes back.
I love fishing for the time out and are just as happy not catching a fish all day.
Whitebait is ok, but i definately wouldnt pay the price it sells for, so unless i catch it, well i dont eat it. And i dont own a net, so i dont catch much at all.
Now that is almost my dream house and land.
Put that in a slightly warmer environment and thats where id wanna live.
cool stream, good for fishing and swimming in and creature hunting.
me so jelous :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Vid of collecting ottos from the wild.
Check out this vid. It kind of puts int perspective into why imported fish are prone to dieing. The collecters in the third world usually have not a care in the world for the welfare of the fish. To them all they see are $$$$$ in the bag.
Correct, ottos prefer to be in groups.
They are also a tropical fish, so this may be why they are dieing in with your goldies!(assuming its a cold tank)
Most ottos are wild caught, hence the large numbers of deaths of new stock. I find the one that are gonna die , do it fast but the one that sare gonna survive, survive for ages. I never buy otts from my LFS until they been in the shop for at least a week. Ive only ever lost one. and he kamakazied out of tank for some reason.
Heres Fish keeping ones.
Not of fish though.

Water Dragons appealed to me as i think they look better(ducks for cover from beardie owners) and seem to be cheaper from what ive seen.
Basically can anyone advise what sort of cost im looking at to set up for either.
I also own a cat. Would this pose a problem as she would likely sit beside enclosure allday watching, would this be to stressful for a lizard???
Sorry for all the questions.
Extract from wiki
"Lamps are typically identified by a code such as F##T##, where F is for fluorescent, the first number indicates the power in watts (or strangely, length in inches in very long lamps), the T indicates that the shape of the bulb is tubular, and the last number is diameter in eighths of an inch. Typical diameters are T12 (1½" or 38 mm) for residential bulbs with old magnetic ballasts, T8 (1" or 25 mm) for commercial energy-saving lamps with electronic ballasts, and T5 (5⁄8" or 16 mm) for very small lamps which may even operate from a battery-powered device."
T5 tubes will not fit into a T8 fitting. T12 bulbs are not very efficient because of less surface area. T5 are the most efficient for light output per watt.
I currently use T8 tubes as they are the cheapest to replace.
