  1. That biosecurity pdf file is handy. I have it saved on my computer for reference as i often go on aquatic plant hunts and its good to know whats good and whats not.
  2. Auction withdrawn by seller. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: hopefully they take my advice and destroy plant. dont want it to destroy more waterways, we have enough to worry about with didymo spreading, let alone some body selling it to someone else and planting it around the countryside. wow. that was my good deed for the day.lol :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  3. Someone trying to sell bucket loads of this plant.they are growing it in a pond they have no clue what it is but from the pic i have id as EICHHORNIA CRASSIPES Auction Number:TM Ref Removed Please read new rulings... Mod Bill. Am i right in the ID??? :-? :-? I have messaged seller with my concerns and given Biosecurity NZ 0800 # for them to report it.

  5. Cheers nemines, that is the look i was trying to achieve.lol Im going to set up properly once i move into my new house. hopefully will be able to make a journal of the progress as i go. BTW the sword has started to flower.
  6. Well as resquested. Here is the mess now. will be dismantling both tanks in a month or two as im shifting, but will be set up again. this is a case of "xmas time " blues in these two as i aint really had much spare time with work , family and play taking up most of my spare time. Check out the sword that was in the previous posts, \ NOW BEFORE ANYONE COMMENTS AND SAYS IT NEEDS A TIDY UP, I KNOW!!!!!!!!
  7. Glad to hear of your success, What plants do you have growing?????
  8. I agree with alan A local lake in my area is full of this plant. It just grows and grows into huge floating mess as each time the stem breaks it becomes an instant new plant.
  9. At present just two baby Geo Suri's did have discus though. Done the African thing, but American is more my fav
  10. this is Daltons Propergating sand on top of daltons Aquatic mix Sand avilable at red shed and Mitre10 mega. quite cheap too Is this the stuff you meant
  11. For anyone interested i finally decided what i wanted and bought two baby Suris, they are so fascinating to watch, My lonely lemon tetra hangs out with them and follows them around. Now just gotta get my big tank fixed and make them a better home before they grow to much.
  12. Just about any shop that sells baby pot plants Red shed has them for about $3 Some chain pet store try charge $5.95 for small plantlet that will die when submerged.
  13. Some Pet stores dont really know jack when it comes to fish etc, not naming any franchises. it will begin to rot and pollute your tank. the best place for it is in a nice pot in your living room, can look great when it really grows big and litterally overflows from pot.
  14. sea monkeys are brine shrimp!!!! the packet mixes that you get with them contain salt and food mixture
  15. Looks to me to be Sagittaria Subtulata, aka dwarf sag the stuff in my tanks objects to being called dwarf and is reaching for the stars, it is very long HTH
  16. Is the swod sending out daughter plantlets? If so the easiest way is to replace parent with a plantlet, trimming swords is often lethal to the plant. Removal of the lower larger leaves will usually induce smaller growth, in my experiances. HTH
  17. It definately is Aponogeton distachyus. Ive done heaps of reading on the net and in books. by the way alan, i got a copy of that book, Encyclopaedia of water plants, off ebay. quite cheap too!
  18. http://www.lucidcentral.org/keys/aquari ... Entry.html Im still playing with this but i looks like an interesting tool altough its american i think it is interesting
  19. I only took three or four plants, but as you can see in the pics, there is plenty more where they came from. i didnt want to take to many as i didnt know what it was at first and when i went back last night i was more interested in getting some photos
  20. Here is a pic of the flower, this confirms it then,
  21. Ha, I found this while reading articles, made me laugh. I may have to try it some day The Art of Aquatic Cooking . . . Water Hawthorn Stew Contributed by Jacques Gerber, Pretoria, South Africa The following is a recipe for cooking Apongeton distachys, known here in South Africa as waterblommetjies (little water flowers). You'll probably know it as Water Hawthorn. Recipe calls for a can of waterblommetjies, but you can use fresh easily, if you can find them. A 400g can of waterblommetjies is equivalent to about 300g of flowers. They have to be picked when at least half the inflorescence is green. 1 X 400g can waterblommetjies (drained) 500g lamb short ribs 15ml oil 1 onion, chopped a few drops of lemon, vinegar or dry white wine 5ml brown sugar 2ml seasoning salt salt and pepper to taste 250ml boiling water 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed Brown meat in oil. Remove and reserve. Fry onion until transparent. Add meat, flavourings and water. Simmer gently until meat is tender. Add waterblommetjies and potatoes (you can add fresh waterblommetjies at this stage as well) and simmer until vegetables are cooked. Mash some of the potatoes to thicken the stew. To serve: Sprinkle with lemon juice and olive oil. Serves 2.
  22. I will go back today after work, thinking back there may have been some flowers on some, this time ill take my camera with me.(and some old shoes, and not wear my jeans so i can get really close, its real muddy) my gut feeling was some type of apon, but didnt think it grew in cold water youll see more pics tonight hopefully, cheers people
  23. Have searched on the net but without a name it is really hard to find a photo to try id. was found growing in a swampy stream area . all leaves floating looking much like some type of lilly, but not the shape im used to seeing. It was everywhere, it actually looked really neat. almost like some exotic tropical swamp where you would expect to see fish swimming below. the water was only two or three feet deep at the most. with partial shade. when uprooted it has a small bulb like a typical lily and stems break easily IDEAS ANYONE, Im guessing Alan will know,
  24. Go to your local appliance store and ask. I work at Retravision and if people want polstyrene they are more than welcome to take it, it costs us money to dump the stuff.( we dont have a recycling scheme for it) Chest freezers and fridges are packaged with nice big sheets of the stuff. if you were close id say come get it
  25. Will find out soon as i purchased a pot of ludwiga repens from local garden centre that has been grown emersed and have planted it outside in my new pond. willl see how that starts to grow and compare.(although i know that will take a while.) i am now also in belief that it is ludwiga after comparing to the stuff i got in my planted tank.same colour and stem structure, just different shaped leaves, cheers people..
